Posting images to my server will be a lot easier when I upgrade to xenforo this fall.

I am both looking forward to it and freaked out at the same time.

Re: Attention GJers-Check your Photobucket accounts

I was able to download all my albums off of PB, they went into a zip file and then I extracted them out of there. The quality of mine isn't the best to start, mostly cell phone pics. But they appear to be in good standard. I didn't have time to dig in and see the resolution, I was just happy to get back all my build pics. PB can now officially blow me. I will look into image shack. I've never had lick posting to this forum from my cell phone, it always times out and says something was missing in the file name. So I need a secondary option for 3rd party posting.

ALL: for some of you reading this thread that want to believe the members that think they know where and what i post here are a few more stats and FACTS about me.

...

Dean, I used you as an example in this thread (and only in this thread) because you used yourself as an example. The other posts are quoted and do the same.

Annnd... I don't want to influence anyone's opinion of you. Your words already do that for you, mine for me, etc. (I can't believe I had to type that out.)

I really like Xenforo. I think it's going to be a great change.

Re: Photobucket alternatives...

What I don't understand is why anyone would use a third party host like PB to post pictures to forums like this one which allows you to upload pictures directly to the forum ?? Just about every other automotive and hobby related forum that I visit, probably 50 of them, allows you to upload the pictures right to the forum. That's what I do. No need for anything like PB.

Bill, I get carried away on some of my posts that they may have 20 or so pictures per post. Takes long enough to do that on one site, but for posting on multiple sites, you can write up your post once in practically any forum using a host's links and copy that same post to other sites, rather than having to upload to each individual site.

PB doesn't seem to have attacked mine yet, but then I have a paid subscription that doesn't run out until the end of August.. Guess I need to get busy on plan B when that occurs. Right now I have a $25 yearly cost, and can see an increase in cost but not to the tune of $400 per year. If that happens I guess my shop thread will have to start over again.

I am in the same boat. I have downloaded all my photos and moved them to ImageShack.

Re: Photobucket alternatives...

So, what's the consensus, this far?

I looked at Google Drive-it has a random smattering of pictures, from my computer. Not sure how it decided which ones it wanted or how to get rid of them off Drive, but keep them on my computer.

Re: Photobucket alternatives...

I think the most robust long term solution, least likely to go away, ever, is S3 in AWS.

It's not the easiest to use though.

If anybody's interested, I'm happy to write up more detailed notes about how to go about getting S3 up and running, but I won't bother if nobody's interested.

I'm definitely interested. I'm swamped at work or I would try to do it on my own, but I'm not very computer software savvy so any help is appreciated. And I'll be sure to put it into my "alternatives" post that I have on more than just this site so a lot more people will see it...with attribution of course.

Re: Photobucket alternatives...

I've been on gd URL.com for a couple years now.

No complaints.

Took a bit to get it all figured out, and there is a lack of any instructions.

it's free, and it works well enough for me.

Re: Attention GJers-Check your Photobucket accounts

$400/yr for PB!!! Why would anyone pay that when you can have your own domain and have it hosted for $100/yr with godaddy or 1and1 (and many more ...)?

Re: Photobucket Just Screwed Me Real Hard

Seems to be that since this all started, I have to log in every time I visit the PB site. Even though I log in and have "remember me" checked, it's still logging me out.

In order to clean up the Stickies, I have merged the PB Hostage and PB alternatives threads.

Re: Photobucket Just Screwed Me Real Hard

OP here,

This is weird. They have taken about twenty of my pictures out of my library and replaced them with that upgrade image. Some of my pictures that look fine, as soon as I click on it to try and save it, I get redirected to a click bait type of site.

Also, some of my images are re-appearing in my threads. I went trough my welding table thread which had all the broken links and started to replace the pics. Then some of the original ones I haven't gotten to yet started to re-appear.

The images that are replaced, are they linked to popular threads somewhere? The bandwidth usage per picture may impact what pictures get the hostage notice.

If they still have it, you could go look at your account usage statistics. You could see how much bandwidth a photo was using. A couple years ago I got a notice that I hit my free bandwidth usage, I find an image I did not link anywhere was sucking back the bandwidth, probably linked by someone for a popular website. Ended up deleting that image as a result. But given the nature of the site, anyone can link to your images and cause you to go over bandwidth limits.
Being July now, your monthly bandwidth limit is reset, so some images may have reappeared as a result of that.

Re: Photobucket Just Screwed Me Real Hard

I am really tempted to walk into the main office and just see who I can talk with, just nicely ask some questions about how they are handling things.

Great idea. Ask for Josh or Moss.. they helped me with some issues a while back and seemed helpful.

Although they may be in Singapore or Bangladesh ..

Re: Attention GJers-Check your Photobucket accounts

Dont know if this is helpful or been mentioned but for smartphone users taptalk app will host your images and post them onto this forum for free and its very easy to do. May not work for everyone but worth a look i bet.

From my Google photo. Just got the app and loaded one photo to test it with.

I see nothing about the wXXXX-hXXXX in my link. Yes, I did the right click on the image and copy image location.

Re: Attention GJers-Check your Photobucket accounts

Yup all my build threads across numerous forums are now third party blocked. Been with photobucket since 2004. Even paid gold membership for a couple years.

Almost sounds like the rest of the forums that are migrating towards Facebook groups.

Re: Photobucket Just Screwed Me Real Hard

You can download them but you can no longer share them. And if you have a decade worth of photos linked from PhotoSuckIt then they've got you by the balls to the tune of $400/yr!!!

They should offer a $375 discount code, on second thought, even with that I would not trust them at all.

I'm an old ******* and need something simple. I have done a few test with my Nikon account but it looks like they do not do 3rd party sharing either

I just sent them an email expressing my thoughts on how they handled this situation. Cliff notes... they weren't nice thoughts.

Re: Attention GJers-Check your Photobucket accounts

News article about Photobucket in The Denver Post. They claim they want a "Sustainable business" They certainly won't get it by charging such an outrageous fee for photo hosting. They started in 2003 as a photo hosting site for Craig's List and ebay, and now they want to kick their core customers to the curb for doing what they said they were originally in business for. No one with any sense at all will pay $400/year so that someone else can look at their photos.

Re: Attention GJers-Check your Photobucket accounts

well I've wound up reactivating a domain I used to use and arranging some hosted space to point it at, so I can get all my images shareable in space I control.
And now I'm tediously re-editing ~1500 images across multiple topics and boards. Photobucket can burn in Hell.

How did you delete your account? I deleted all of my pictures about a week ago, but couldn't find where to delete the actual account. I don't pb being able to use my headcount with potential advertisers, I want pb to see their account member numbers drop like a politicians approval rating.

Don't need 3rd. Party hosting if you post it here.

Dead on. I am through with "free" photo hosting sites for adding pics to posts. I feel I paid dearly for the PB service by tolerating the incessant advertising and the crappy clunky features and am in no mood to tolerate their BS any longer. If Garage Journal values the historic preservation of pictures added to post there is no better alternative than to host those photos here. I will never trust another remote photo hosting site. Ed.
