Well, the barn isn't new, having been started about three years ago, but I figured I'd do a build thread anyway, since I'm new here.

Some background: We bought 7 acres of woods in upstate SC about 8 years ago. Once our son finished college, I left my job, and started building. Phase I was a little shed to keep my stuff in while building the barn (Phase II). I lived in a little leaky pop-up camper while I worked on the barn. Once the barn was done (at least dried in) I moved into the barn, and started Phase III, the house.

The barn is 28 X 48, with 12' 4" headroom downstairs, and a 28 X 32 loft with 8' headroom. I put down a reinforced 6" slab for a future lift. Eventually, I'll wall off the back 1/3 of the barn to make a huge great room with a 21' ceiling. We'll use it for big get-togethers, and as a guest house for overnight visitors. There's a full bath, too. To support the loft, there are columns on each side. I'll use one side for wood working, one for metal working (I'm a toolmaker by trade) and the center bay will be left open for repair work on my various vehicles, tractors, and boats.

Right now, I have to finish the house (for some reason, the wife insists on this, so the barn is stuffed full of our earthly possessions, since we sold our old house last year. Eventually, I'll insulate and sheathe the interior walls, and set up a shop. Might be a looong time, though!

The first pic is our new driveway, about 450' from the barn site.

Here's the slab

I actually lived in this thing!

Roughed in!

Doors are hung. The opening is nearly 12' X 12'

Finally got it painted

The latest addition was 20 X 24 concrete slab, just a couple weeks ago.

If anyone's interested, I can show pictures of the house, too. It's ICF construction, with a lot of energy efficient features. It's a slow process for one old man, mostly working alone, but I'm getting there. I can link a house build thread from another forum, if that's allowed here.

Like the temporary living quarters. I've got a 1978 Apache. We love the thing. However we've only spent a week or two in it on vacations.

My Apache is a '72, and was the biggest, fanciest one they made that year. Other than needing a new gas line, the interior is original and intact. I'd like to restore it some day for trips down to the beach.

Let me see if I can link to my house thread. It's on a neat forum about building small cabins and houses, which some of you might find interesting.
