I am about to get started on my next big project- dismantling and rebuilding a barn! It's not a traditional barn, but built in the late 1990's as post frame and rafter construction. This is definitely the biggest building project I will probably ever take on but the end result will be awesome!
This came up on FB marketplace as free, my wife said to make contact and we ended up being the luck ones to get it for FREE! Of course there will be some costs with getting it down and a ton of work, but well worth it.
The building is 40' wide and 33' deep, I'll be building it in front of my existing garage and joining the two together separated by a wall. Right now it has a large hay loft which will help for the first stage of dismantling.
To get started I am going to have a roofer remove the roof then get going on everything else with the help of friends and family.
As of right now I am hoping to have everything taken down and transported by the end of June.
How did the barn get so dilapidated and fall into disrepair?

I think they just had too much going on in life... fortunately everything had some seriously thick tarpaper under all that cedar siding. I was able to salvage probably 20 sheet of 40 year old osb.

I haven't done an update in a while, the weather has been pretty brutal but finally got the upstairs window framed in on Saturday. The weather was great and it felt good to swing the hammer again!

The next time I work on it will be putting up the OSB, then reframing my garage doors, they will be 10x10, originally had set up for 10x8

Glad to see you are able to get back at, this is a really nice build thread. I love old buildings and seeing this one saved is great. Thanks!

Cool project! Those doors should be a great touch for your build.

I would be so sore after the first part of this project I probably couldn't move!

A couple more updates from May, finished up the OSB and got one wall wrapped over the weekend. Still coming along slowly but I have a lot of 3 day weekends over the summer to keep moving on it. It's starting to feel like a garage now that it's closed in. Ideally it will be wrapped and windows and doors in this month.

Doing a proper job it would seem. This will be a fun one to watch. Will all be worth it and has a great aesthetic.

Siding is getting delivered tomorrow!
I am doing 1x12 rough sawn board and batten, I have to stack it and let it finish drying for a couple weeks.

At the moment it is fully house wrapped, the first floor doors and windows are in, have to do the garage doors and that huge upper window.

The local power company is being a pain and not getting me set up with service yet.....but I don't have much choice so I will just keep on them.

The siding was delivered today, glad to see it here!
I bought it from a guy in Rockford who owns a sawmill up in Amish country, all rough sawn 1x12 white pine.
It's going to be a lot of painting, have to wait about 4 weeks for it to finish drying.
All said and done I am in it for $1.70/sf delivered, should outlast me no problem.

What’s your painting plan? Paint everything at once or just what you can install on the weekend.

When a friend installed wood siding on his 125+ year old house, every piece he cut to fit required additional priming on the ends. I believe it was delivered pre-primed.

as of this moment we will be spraying all sides of each board after they are dry.
I am sure it will be an all weekend event of laying down plastic, painting and flipping boards.
Cut edges will be painted as we install too.
Once the boards are on, we will spray a second coat.

This weekend I got started with the board and batten installation on the porch area, looks great but I didn't take any pictures after the wall was done.
This front wall took me probably 12 hours and I am beat, well worth it for such a cool look! I'll get some more pics up this week

We painted the front wall last night, not a great picture but this is the look we have going.
Lots of battens and trim to get up.

September was a busy month, so any work was during the week at night but I managed to get a few things done:

East wall with the garage doors is all done at ground level up to 10'
South wall boards are all primed and nailed up, got that all done in one day
Garage door tracks are all up and in place, will be putting up those doors in October!
Last night I primed about 35 boards one side, then tonight the other side for the east wall and install over the weekend.
And last but not least I installed my meter socket and panel, should have power at the end of October!

You know it!
Shopping for a two post lift this month, the goal is to have the exterior all sealed up and the lift installed before the end of the year.

It's been another couple weeks since I worked on the barn, but today the power company is getting me hooked up!
This weekend is supposed to be beautiful weather wise, so I plan to install my dormer windows and get started on the dormer siding, should be a real treat on the metal roof. I'll do it slow and safe with scaffold and some heavy planks.

We got back to work this weekend, one dormer is completely sided and painted! It took literally and entire day to get this thing done. Defintely the steep part of the learning curve. Luckily we used the first one as a template and have 80% of the boards cut and painted for the other two dormers, the rest will be cut when I am back up there.
Also got the second window installed and all taped in, I was done after that, lots of climbing around up and down the scaffold.

Last but not least I went and looked at my new/used lift, scored a really nice Challenger SA10 for $1800. I'll be picking that up this weekend. The guy is switching to heavier lifts and will be looking to get rid of the other one in December.

Busy weekend with the beautiful weather!

My dad and I went and dismantled the lift, loaded, unloaded all by noon with a couple hours of travel on Saturday morning.

Got to work and had the middle dormer all done by dark.

Sunday had the last dormer done by noon and headed out to take the kids trick or treating.

Got home and finished off building the new heated/insulated pig house for our two potbelly pigs.

Overall a super productive weekend, feeling quite fortunate!

Had another busy weekend and accomplished a bunch of stuff, all the rafter ends are now officially blocked.... all 80 of them. Not perfectly air tight but the draftiness is nearly gone.
Debating either clear caulk or maybe foam around them, probably at a later date.

Also got one garage door up and 80% functioning, the tracks need some adjustment but for now it's covering the 10x10 hole. Got a tarp up over the other door to keep most of the weather out until I can work on it again.... not until the first weekend in December.

Last but not least, got the OSB up in the porch ceiling. I elected to keep that open over the porch for seasonal storage of stuff, it's that last little wedge over the porch.
At a later date this ceiling is going to get the same boards as the siding but stained, I am keeping many of the 'pretty' boards aside for just this.
