[38 Special]

This is not a new build. But one that I documented well. I thought I would pass it along. Just found this site, great stuff here. I plan to become a regular.

This is the barn right before I bought the house. This is 2/26/99.

First thing was gravel, Man is was hard to roll stuff around. Jetskis were our hobby then, and it was hard to roll them around on the stands in the gravel. There was concrete in our future. You can also see there was no deck around the pool. That changes also.

On 10/27/99, we have had enough of the gravel. Living on a gravel road was one thing, but not around "The Barn".

You can see we have added a deck around the pool by now. Concrete being poured.

Concrete is finished, now to January 2000. Something we don't get much of in Alabama, snow. So it had to be documented:

Already run out of room. I have an old race trailer and a storage shed beside it.

Our hobby has changed to RockCrawling Jeeps. We need more room. Tried to buy the ajoining property, but they were not willing to sell. So I decided to build around the barn. Around, as in on three sides.

On 12/5/2002, we broke ground.

You can see, we were limited on the distance we can go back, the bank is steep, and drops 60 feet to the river.

This side of the barn will have the lift, it will be a metal building.

The 6" PVC is to remove water from the original barn.

This side, towards the house, will be a "clean" garage. For the wifes Miata (Now BMW M Roadster).

I put strings out where I wanted the edges of the slab to be. My first mistake. The vertical in the next picture was supposed to be two feet to the right. Oh well, a larger "Race Deck" and a smaller work bench.

Footings done, concrete blocks arrive.

Ready to lay block. The block, concrete, and part of the roof were the only things I subbed out. Everything else was done my myself and friends.

Here is the other side, the "Miata Garage". It did not need footings and block, it was level enough for just a slab.

Okay, well you know what's next. Yep, more concrete!!

This is the back of the barn, called "The Tool Room".

This is the "Lift" side. You can see where the concrete had to be cut and removed to make the pad level. Did not think I was doing this when I poured concrete the first time.

Showing the drainage between the existing barn and the "Lift" building. I decided not to cut off the eve of the barn. This gives about 24" between the two buildings, and a lot of water goes here. The barn eve is guttered. After five years, it appears the water leaves the area the way it was designed.

The "Miata Garage" side has a down spout inside the new building. It removes water from above the green man door. Took that water off the back of the building.

This water spiket froze this year. Got down to 10 degrees F. Second time since it was built. This time, I made a way to remove the water from the upright. This is actually the third time this pipe has been an issue. I shot a nail through it putting up the siding too!!!!!

As you can see, it was a long day. Even longer night finishing.

We got some rain later that night while they were still here finishing. It effected the finish some, giving it a rougher texture than was planned. I ended up using paint on the floor to help smooth it out. One of those freak storms we get around here. The concrete guys worked amnost till dawn getting it the best they could.

Fast forward two weeks till 12/29/00. The walls are starting to go up.

This is the "Tool Room".

Miata Garage:

This is at the end on the Miata Garage. This outside alcove houses the two 100 gallon propane tanks, the air compressor, and now has yard tools hanging on the walls. The reason for two propane tanks, is they would not set a 250 gallon within 10 feet of the barn. The side it had to go was the house side. House already has a 500 gallon tank on the other side, and the wife asked not to have another in the yard. I have learned to pick my battles, that one earned a "Yes dear".

This is the "Race Deck". This is where we sit around the gas campfire and tell stories, look out over the river. This is out a man door off the "Lift".

New years has past. It is now 1/3/03.

The roof is starting to go up.

The metal building is coming off the ground. Another mistake of mine, looking back on it. They were going to charge very little to erect this verses the amount of time it took me and my friends to erect. One of those hindsight 20/20 things. Looking at it on paper, just how hard could it be???? One person had done one before.

Part of the front wall is in.

Standing on the "Race Deck" look into the "Tool Room", the door to the left goes into the "Lift".

Metal is finished on the lift. The date is 1/20/03.

End wall is in the "Tool Room", the window in this end has not been cut. This is the only window in the barn.

"Tool Room". You can see the framing for the window. Right below the window will be a work bench. The one that will be about 24" shallower than planned.

Lift looking out. The roll up door is designed to be tall enough for the Jeep Rock Crawler to go in on the trailer. 10' tall.

"Miata Garage" being closed in on the side opposite the lift. Everything going on at once. What I worked on, depended on if, and how much assistance I had.

The "Tool Room" has a roof.

Looking down the "Tool Room" before the gutter goes on.

After the metal went up in the "Lift", I decided to hire out the rest of the work. Took them only two days, including the guttering and trim.

The window is in the "Tool Room".

The window was reused off the front of the existing barn. A garage door will occupy the old window space.

One of the first things you have to do, even before it is finished it to move a vehicle in.

Roof finished, gutters on, all trimmed out, money well spent.

Okay, back in town, some more.

Shows the propane tanks tucked up behind the Miata Garage. That is also where the air compressor is.

This is a fold out work table. Legs hinged and folded up against the wall.

Here it is down.

Metal up on the Tool Room wall on the race Deck, and new patio furniture.

Tool Room gets insulation and electrical rough in.

I did the electrical. Actually I just did was I was told by an electrician friend. He hooked up everything and ran all the wiring in the Lift, as it is in conduit.

Lighting and ceiling fans done in the Lift.

Wash sink and urinal.

The Tool Room gets pegboard wall treatment.

Miata Garage also gets pegboard walls.

And the garage doors arrive. I forgot, I also subbed the installation of these out. They worked too cheap to do it myself.

Miata goes in its garage. You can see the downspout for the man door going through the garage on the right wall.

The date is 2-24-03.

The wall goes up blocking the view of the urnal.

Ceiling in, lights in, heat in.

Outdoor gas fire plumbed in on the Race Deck.

Floors get coated in gray.

In the old Barn, there was an office in the corner from the previous owner. It has been removed. Shelves look find of funny now they are not against the wall! The electrical panel is to be moved from the side wall to the front wall as the meter is now between the two buildings.

Also, the panel was not large enough with the new additions.

Tool Room starts getting stuff put up on the walls and shelves.

Lift gets floor paint and wood up the walls four feet to keep us from beating the walls off!! I should have insulated this building. I can keep it warm, but damn, it is so loud when it rains, you cannot work.

Okay, now for the front of the old Barn. The Barn doors have to go as they are in the center, making it a one car garage. Kind of like the old doors, but progress says there gone.

Garage doors are on site and ready to be installed once the openings are prepared. I had them set the garage doors above the ceiling so I could get the full 10' ceiling height.

Race Deck handrails are up.

Barn doors are down. Matter of fact, the whole front of the barn is down!!!!

Ending date is 3-21-03.

I bought a used lift from a friend of mine. He did the install for me.

Doors are up on the old barn.

The lift is installed:

Tools starting to be installed in the Tool Room. Drill press was too small and has since been replaced.

Air line is run. Y'all now have me rethinking my use of PVC. I have never had an issue or a leak, but I did not know the hazards of PVC till I got on this site.

Stereo and TV are installed, vent free heater installed in each end of the Tool Room.

This is the end of the build. I'll get some new pictures of how the Barn is 6 years later. A lot more "stuff". A lot less room. And you can never have enough flat space (table tops) in a garage.

I really enjoyed the thread. how has the metal building held up during storms and whatnot? I'm about to have to add something to my shop so I can have about fifteen feet of height for big trucks so I can do paintwork and that looks like the most economical way to do it.

No issues with storms, but it is so loud inside during rains. If you decide on metal, insulate. I wish I did.

I would be open to anything, but I wished I had put the roll type that goes between the metal studs and the outside sheet metal.

I'm going against the grain here, but building garages like that is definitely different. Different strokes...

Reminds me of farmers who build a barn and then add on, add on, add on, etc. Roof pitches are different, siding is different, and the building footprints are all different. The other option I'm thinking of would of been to throw up a larger building right over the top of the existing barn(then demo the existing) and had one garage instead of a lean-to and 2 different garages.

Well, I finally got around to taking the current pictures. Today is a great day in Alabama. Weather is 77 degrees or so. All the windows in the house, and all the doors in the barn are open.

The Maita Garage is first. Miata has been replaces by a BMW M Roadster.

Next we go into the original barn.
