Is there a standard for lumens per sq ft based on white drywall and 8 ft ceilings. Have a 24x30 going up and did not want to over engineer the project. I did a search on this but came up empty. Thanks

I unknowingly ordered the backordered ones. One of the ladies called me the same day to tell me about a slightly cheaper alternative that was in stock. My son was home from school today, so we replaced the ceramic single bulb fixtures with them. Night and day difference. Come on bright from the get-go, brighter than my fluorescent ones a few feet over.

Platonic,
Thanks much for all your work on this thread and the lighting layout thread.Lot's of great info to absorb. I'm going to try the Maxlight/James combo in my woodworking shop. I'm still waffling over the Cree LS4 for my other shop as esthetics/appearance is more important there. The price on those is making me hesitate also.

I bought two James T818W1200BIXXDF50F1 led tubes from Bees Lighting. The labels on the bulbs do not have any manufacturer's name. Is this common? Does anyone have bulbs that have the James name on them?

Thanks,
Steve

I finally got the maxlite fixtures from LED Lighting Wholesale. Well, some of them.

I ordered 12 at the end of December. Called a week later and was told they were back-ordered and wouldn't be available til January 22nd. Would have been nice if they told me that without having to call.

January 29 I received a huge box and opened it - it was the fixtures - Great!

I was on the way out of town so I left them alone. I came home Sunday and opened it all the way up - a lot of packing paper and only 5 fixtures. I check the packing slip and they were drop shipped from maxlite - paperwork says to pack 5 - I quickly check my email to make sure I didn't make a mistake. Nope - I ordered 12.

Emailed them Sunday night and got an email back today saying they are shipping the other 7 today - coming from their shop in MI so it will be here tomorrow.

Not sure whats up with these guys but 6 weeks later I have my fixtures.

I guess that is good news... I ordered ten, plus three cages. I called for an ETA a day or so after the order was placed and was told I should have them "first week of February." Fingers crossed...

For anyone looking into the Hyperikon retro fits amazon is selling, I ordered 18 of them 6-8 months ago to replace the t12 bulbs in my shop (mounted at 10'4"). Its still grossly under lit for the square footage (1500sqft) but my biggest complaint comes from the pattern of light they put off. The clear covers distort the light and put bright stripes on the wall and shop floor. I also have two tubes which no longer light up at full brightness.

I removed the covers, which eliminated the irregular light pattern but appear to have made the cavern effect much worse than it was before. Light cut off on the walls are a solid line now where they faded before. Overall, I have not been impressed with these tubes. I plan to pull everything out and replace them all with T5HO fixtures this spring unless I see a more promising LED option pop up.

Koko & wind954 - Since most bypass LED bulbs are not glass you do not need Covered (Wrapped) fixtures for 8ft ceilings. Wrapped housings are available for LED bypass bulbs if you want it for aesthetic or light distribution reasons.

Westbank - 3000 Lumen output per 4ft fixture is too low for a 10 ft ceiling. Go for 5000 Lumen per 4ft fixture output. Is there a reason you've selected the ZL2N over the ZL1N, or ZL over the James retrofits? I couldn't find any reliable online prices for the ZL2N. I made you a PDF with a bunch of layout/fixture examples (link) for a 20x20x10 space.

wind954 - See layout collection post 15 (link)

crocket468 - LED lamps with frosted lenses are fine. For the reasons you listed, avoid clear lensed lamps where you can see individual LEDs. Clear lensed lamps may be more efficient, but they're nasty to look at - even in fixtures that have their own external clear textured diffusers.

Here it is. 12 fixtures in a 35' wide 19' deep garage with 9' ceilings.

Four rows of three.

I mounted them 3.5' from the outside walls and each row is roughly 7' apart.

Very happy with the result. I may add 3 more going perpendicular, one at the front of each bay.

Thanks Platonic! I ordered up the lights. I'll post up my results when everything is all finished.

Has anyone tried this fixture: http://www.beeslighting.com/product-p/st48232-led.htm

The Maxlite fixtures are back ordered to at least the 25th of this month.

Bees called me back and said the maxlite's were backordered. Is there any reason to not use the CTL light in the link above? Name brand doesn't matter to me as long as these perform like the Maxlites. It's a white 4ft led housing...I have to imagine they're pretty similar.

Hi!
I was directed here from another non-related board.

I am working on a project that is essentially upgrading some metal halide exterior lighting to LED. Would it be possible to get some recommendations for this here?

Thanks in advance,

Koko - I would have Bees confirm that the CTL housing comes with non-shunted lamp holders.

high order - This thread is intended for interior garage fixtures. My only comment on your quest is that I tried upgrading some exterior 250W HPS fixtures to LED and was unable to find an equivalent retrofit LED bulb short enough to fit in the legacy fixture.

koko - I am installing 20 of the CTL fixtures (ST48232-LED from Bees) and 40 James T818W1200BIXXDF50F1. I should have them up and lit in 2 or 3 days.
For now, I can tell you that I had ordered 2 of the Maxlite fixtures before they were out of stock so that I could check them out before ordering a bunch. So, comparing the Maxlites to the CTLs:
1. the CTLs are wider and the bulb spacing is wider, if that matters to anyone.
2. the CTLs are a bit flimsier. The housing parts just press together and so before hanging them we had to use wood blocks and tap a lot of the pieces back together. That being said, once they are hung there is no real stress on them and I think that they'll be fine.
3. I think that the Maxlite lamp holders are better, they have the lamp-lock lamp holders. Keep in mind that I know nothing about lighting, the CTL lamp holders look the same as the ones I've seen on other fluorescent fixtures and I did not see a name on the lamp holders.

Platonic - Thank you for sharing your time and knowledge.

I read through most of the thread and didn't see this discussed.

I have a ton of 4ft T8 fixtures in the shop, 10' ceilings. They are fluorescent fixtures I got from Menards a few years ago.

I am considering beginning to replace bulbs with LED bulbs.

Is there any benefit to installing the recommended lights with the current ballasts vs removing the ballast and direct wiring (additional work aside)? How does the energy usage compare?

Is there any reason NOT to install them directly with the current ballast?

morehead - Most lighting manufacturers that provide UL listed lights also provide CUL which is the UL equivalent of CSA.

I haven't seen a lot of reviews on flat panel LED lights. My concern, for any lights really, is that my garage gets very cold. In the winter it can be in the 20's. Are there certain lights I should be looking at based on the cold, and would this be a viable option for me?

https://www.superbrightleds.com/mor...e/50w-led-panel-light-fixture-4ft-x-2ft/3152/

I am in no way stuck on this brand. Moreso the shape and size is what I like. I would be flush mounting them to the ceiling, and only need to light up at 15'15' square area. Was thinking two of these might do the trick. Open to any and all suggestions. I do have access above the garage ceiling, but would like to avoid needing to get up there if at all possible.

Thanks for any and all help.

JDCrae - Edge lit panels like the one you linked to provide excellent smooth light. I can't speak to the brand, but the $130 price tag is right where it should be. These are intended for typical drop ceilings, so you'll have to rig up something to hold it up. The driver box is on the back. If you're creative, you can relocate the driver and box to a remote location. What is your ceiling height and primary use of the space?

Questions about the recommended Maxlite LSS2XT8USE4803 fixture. Can they be connected end to end with only one feed? If not does anyone know of a economical LED ready fixture that can be? I looking to make 12' long lights. Also is it better to surface mount them or hang them on chains? Thanks.

I'll be starting the build on my 38' x 48' x 13' shop next week.

Yes, they can be connected end to end. As far as hanging them via a chain or surface mounting that is solely up to you...

Platonic Solid, Let's see if I got this straight. The Maxlight housing coupled with the James LED is superior, for the money, to anything currently on the market? There's nothing else to buy with this setup?

Curious on this as well as I'm about to pull the trigger on my lighting.

Has anyone else installed this setup yet?

I'm in the process of building a 30 x 50 metal garage. The walls will be 13' tall, and the peak will be approx. 16 feet. It will be my personal garage for storing and working on cars, and will have a 2-post lift in one of the bays.

In addition to the obvious goal of good, quality lighting for the lowest initial cost, I also don't want to deal with changing bulbs or ballasts, especially in the peak of the building. I've spent a lot of time reading this thread and others. My head is spinning from all the great info! I was considering using these lights in the peak:

http://www.beeslighting.com/product-p/ibh-12l-mvolt.htm

I've read good reviews of this light elsewhere, but haven't been able to find anything on Garage Journal.

Assuming that they will be hung at approx. 15 feet, does anyone have an opinion on this light vs. the Maxlight / James LED?

Thanks, Cory

rooster shooter - The Maxlight + James combination is the highest Lumen per dollar UL Listed hard wired surface mounted fixture + Lamp I have found to date. This is a complete fixture with nothing else to buy.

Also for clarity... is it correct that you do not recommend these combination for mounting heights above 10'?

Plantonic - Thank You. Keeping up with best value for lighting lighting my shop is impossible for me. Without your work and comments I probably would just buy from the home store at a much higher cost. You saved me $$.

It can be done, you just have to use more of them, which means you'll want to figure in the cost of additional wiring and installation time when comparing these to higher lumen fixtures.

Does anyone know anything about the metalux fixtures menards sells? I'm looking to put in 12x 4' T8 fixtures in my garage that I will probably put fluorescent now and switch to led in the future. If I can spend $20-30 per fixture to get something a little nicer up front then upgrade to led tubes later I will do that.

bdresch - Please post link to fixture in question. I suspect you'd be better off installing the $38.50 LED strip lights linked on post 1. The only purpose for waiting is if you're holding out to get better efficiency LED.

This was what I was thinking. Mainly because I can buy them local when they are on sale. But if the extra money doesn't really buy me a better fixture than the Maxlites, I will just order some of those and be done.

Hi there. I'm a newbie here and tried weeding through this site for help on a lighting setup for my new garage. I can't use fluorescent lights because of the cold. My goal is 8' LED lights. I am planning on 10 for my 3 bay 40' x 30' x 12'. 1 light across the front and rear of each bay, and 1 light front to rear between each bay including the far left and right. I found these https://www.eledlights.com/8-foot-single-lube-led-light-fixture.html#.Vt2u2nNOnqA and the bulbs https://www.eledlights.com/t8-8foot-led-tube.html#.Vt2vX3NOnqA. $812 shipping free. Bulb is single, 4k lumens. Fixture has a clip in the middle for supporting the bulb. Made in China, but aren't they all? If anyone has a better suggestion, please help. Thanks in advance, Rune

Purchased 6 fixtures from Bees Lighting and I'm very happy with the quality of the housing and the lamps. Cost was $37.76 per fixture with lamps.

I ordered fixture MaxLite LSS2XT8USE4803 but they were out of stock.
Bees Lighting called me and suggested CTL fixture. Good solid fixture with multiple knockouts.
