Clear *****! Don't go there! Way too painful + uneven light distribution.

If a person wanted to use these in a box style fixture (like for a dropped ceiling), and those fixtures have diffuser panels, would you think clear tubes would be acceptable then?

I tried that. This method reduces the painful sharp point light source, but aesthetically looks like ****. It produces a weird psychedelic lighting effect. So that's a mixed answer. Having seen the result and since a frosted lamp lens solves the problem, I don't recommend it.

Platonic, first time poster, but I've lurked for a while. Just wanted to say thank you for all your information shared... I was able to use the acuity visual tool and the information here to get my lighting sorted out.

LED lighting wholesale knocked the maxlight fixture cost down to $12.50/each because I ordered 25 of them. The shipping was "free" but $2/each got added on due to them being "oversized". Overall, $14.50/each shipped was a good deal.

Prolighting has great customer service, but the shipping on the preloaded fixtures (even with forthcoming 12% discount) was spicy. They wanted to send them freight for >$100. I bought the GLL bulbs from them since they had the BF sale and shipping was reasonable.

PS- I think I'm finally squared away on interior lighting. Will be purchasing bulbs and fixtures Friday. Thanks again for your assistance in that venture. Now, onto Exterior Lighting for the building. I have 3 locations that require fixtures. (2) will flank a 12x8 garage door with a mount height of just over 8'. And (1) that will mount over a 3x7 walk door with a mount height of just over 7'. I'm looking at gooseneck barn style wall mounted LED fixtures that include a photocell for dusk to dawn operations, ideally 4000/5000K. Linked are a few units I'm considering. Your thoughts on LED integrated lighting, as opposed to a typical fixture using an LED bulb for this type of application? Or any suggestions of alternate fixtures that are in this family? All 3 fixtures will be subject to direct weather at times. Thanks!

83- What was your total shipping cost? I'm assuming you purchased 25 fixtures and 50 bulbs from them? I called them yesterday and received a quote for 20 fixtures and 40 bulbs, just curious as to what they charged you. Thanks.

How did you get free shipping on LED Lighting Wholesale? I entered the same order as you online and got the $2 oversize + $45 shipping which brought the total to $407.54 or $16.30 per. Did you place order over the phone? Thanks!

Platonic- Maybe I missed something, but how did you get 140 Lumens/Watt?

When I read the specs on this bulb on the page, it says 135-149 lu/w. Just wondering in an attempt to directly compare lumen output to other bulbs.

m123 - 2520 Lumens / 18W = 140 Lumens/Watt

Right, I understand but are you saying 140 based on roughly the middle of the output range? 135-149 lumens/watt is what is said. For example, if the bulbs I get happen to be super efficient, and output at the max spec of 149 lu/w then my bulbs would be 2682 lumens? Probably analyzing this too closely, but just trying to understand. Other bulbs don't give a range of output. I don't see 2520 lumens documented anywhere on the spec page.

Well, you can't beat first hand experience. So I'll take your word for it. Thanks.

Wasn't in love with the idea. Just trying to learn what my options are. Next is to figure out a fixture pattern.

Sorry for the slow response. Shipping was $27.91 on just the bulbs... it was effectively free on the housings. Impressive turnaround from Prolighting, the bulbs were ordered Wednesday and showed up today. Don't have any tracking info on the housings yet, but I'm not surprised.

I'm not sure; I placed the order online... I must have gotten lucky? :dunno: When I saw the price in the cart, I figured I'd better pull the trigger on it, good thing I did.

LED tubes appear to be merely LED strips inside of a tube to retrofit in a fixture. Would it work to just attach strips of LED tape on the ceiling? Is the fixture necessary?

clawman - This has been tried many times and has failed equally as many times. LEDs need a heat sink and to be diffused. LEDs come in many lumen outputs - the higher the lumen output, the more important it is to have proper diffusion and heat dissipation. LED tubes also contain the driver which constantly regulates the current and voltage. The fixture housing the tubes (or LED arrays and drivers) provides a code compliant wiring compartment.

I agree with Platonic Solid.

...but, if you want to use LED strips for areas where fixtures are too bulky or the wrong size you can use the following aluminium profile+lens kit as a heat sink and a diffuser: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PJSUZSK

I used the highest density strip that I could find at the time. It is 12 volt so no compliance issues and you can get it with power supply: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MSWCKJ4

The above combination is very useful for those "special cases" because:
  • It is about 3/8" in total height
  • Custom length
  • Low voltage
  • Uniform intensity

Here is a picture of this LED strip configuration underneath a shelf for adding extra light to my bench (excuse the mess...):

Here is the picture again now attached, I hope it works.

What is the proper way of inserting in-line pictures from a local storage (not using http://)?

I have scrolled through numerous posts on this site and am astounded by the wealth of great information. I took Paltonic Solid's advice and ordered 20 of the 48" LED's and double fixtures. What I have is a half of a 46 x 60 storage building. My side is 23 x 60 with 15' walls, a 14 x 14 garage door on one end and far right on the end, service door on left. The electrical service is in the far back left corner.

Not so much looking for lighting for a working shop so much but to get around in the storage building at night. My question is what would the minimal amount of double tube LED's needed, the layout spacing of them, and should they be hung lower by chains because of the height? And would 14 ga wiring be sufficient or should I use 12ga because of the 60' distance to the switch near the service door. I currently have on hand 10 double LED tubes for my side but will get whatever is recommended by the experts like Platonic.

So I have decided to order lights finally. I have a 40x40 shop with 10' sidewalls, no ceiling. The utility room is 8x12 that is within the 40x40 space. The rectangles on the picture are my light placement. Going to do LED on the 4' bases. Likely 5k light, 2400 lumen bulbs like the ones that devildog1205 posted. This will give me 14 bases for 28 bulbs total. Is this going to be a sold plan or too much/too little light?

they will be spaced about 8' apart

Miles- Platonic will likely confirm in more detail here. But I don't think 14 double bulb fixtures in a 40x40 will be sufficient. If you haven't already, go to ProLighting's website and "Request a Layout" from their main page here. They'll evaluate your building and email you a detailed layout of their recommendations. I received a response from them next day and their recommendation for my project was nearly identical to that of Platonic' s, as far as number of fixtures and most effective layout is concerned. Good luck!

I have good news and bad news.

First, I'd like to thank everyone in this thread for their input, especially Platonic Solid. His advise and link to the layout tool in post #931 was what helped me to finally order lights for my 24x36 garage.

This leads me to the bad news. I think I may be responsible for the unavailability of the 5000K bulbs. Last Friday morning, after re-reading this thread multiple times, I ordered 20 of the recommended Diva fixtures from Bees Lighting and 40 of the 5000K bulbs from Lightup. Both orders went through, and the fixtures were delivered today.

Later in the day on Friday, I ordered four more fixtures and eight more bulbs for my Dad. The 5000K bulbs no longer were an option, and I ordered the 4000K bulbs for him.

Today I checked on the status of my bulb order, and saw that the bulbs were backordered.

Fearing that my order would be cancelled, I called Lightup this morning, which leads me to the good news. I was told that the bulbs are indeed backordered, but they expect to have more in stock (7,000 of them!) at the end of October.

So, unless you need the bulbs right away, I would wait until they come back into stock.

So my order of bulbs from Lightup have finally shipped! I was told the bulbs were backordered until the end of December, but they must have receive them early.

I received notification that they shipped yesterday (11/27) and are on the truck to be delivered today.

For those waiting on these backordered bulbs, hopefully you will see them soon.

Ok Guys, I have read my self silly about LED's for my new shop. The shop is 64 x 40 x 16. Interior walls and ceiling will be white metal with a concrete floor. Fixtures can be surfaced mounted or dropped 1 foot. I want a bright shop so working on details at bench level isn't a hassle. I have fooled around with the visual tool and have some ideas but would love some input for fixtures and layout.
Thanks

The prolighting people got back to be with a layout, and used what a 4 bulb t8 as opposed to t8 2 bulb like i asked. They also didnt draw their diagram up like my shop is drawn up.

Further calculation has me looking at 18-2 bulb t8 lights for a total of 85,300 lumens needed. So 36 bulbs. I could bump it up to 20 fixtures and fill in all the gaps equally like this? The rows of 4 are 8' apart.

IMG_5526.jpg

So looking around I could get 40 bulbs and 20 fixtures to do the whole shop (minus utility room) for 500 bucks before shipping. Not too shabby. But that puts me at about 10,000 lumens over the design (they had the design with one 10k lumen fixture inside where my utility room is)

Also, I was planning on wiring them so they all come on at once with the switch. Any cons to that plan? I have the opener lights if I want just a little light to go grab something.

milesvdustin - See PDF layout here (link)
I used the LUMEGEN 2640 Lumen bulb output specs (see post #1 this thread)
Assumed 6" wall thickness
Location dimensions on pgs 2 & 3 are from interior walls (39' x 39' space)
Assumed purpose of garage: Auto repair/maintenance

I meant 20 of the side by side t8 fixtures for 40 tubes. I am confused now if thats how you designed that layout
