One of my dads old buddies put a train horn on his truck, worked pretty well, except if you waited at a train crossing until somebody was on the tracks and then hit the horn, some didn't see the humor in it.

There's a good reason they're polite to someone ringing a bell: bikes just about out number pedestrians over there. Given how they feel about personal space, by the time a biker rings the bell, it means their front tire is just about up your asscrack.

Works even better in some parts of Europe.

In Holland cyclists have the right of way, so look out! They expect you to move and will run right into you if you don't.

The Domino's guy even delivered pizza by bicycle, and the Dutch aren't very generous tippers either. Last winter was brutal and that guy was so very grateful to have a couple American tippers in the neighborhood. Our food was always hot!

I've got the airzound too. Cars think they're about to be run down by a Semi.

I think some of those people turned, saw some weirdo with a bike bell, and just wanted to get away from him, not necessarily a bicycle.

After spending 3 years in Japan, I can give you a little perspective on this one...

VERY few people (relatively) own cars in Japan, especially in the big cities (where this was filmed). Most people use pubic transit (trains). If they live far enough away from the train station, they use a bike to get there. The train stations have multi-level concrete parking structures for bicycles (just like we have for cars, but everything is sized for parking bicycles). Often, a person owns two bicycles...one at the other end, to get to work. So, they take bike 1 from home to the train station, bike 2 from the other train station to work, then bike 2 back to the train station after work, where it stays locked up overnight and the train back home, where they take bike 1 from the train station back home. Walking a bicycling are a much more prevalent form of transportation, along with trains.

Right, and I'm sure that was some of the reaction, but if I were to see some weirdo on the sidewalk with a bicycle bell and a video camera, I'd be getting out of his way anyway.
