I just want to say that this is an awesome forum, I have been lurking for years and some of you have awesome shops. Just a warning, this thread is going to pic heavy. I bought the house about 2 years ago and from the beginning I wanted to have a basement shop/garage.

Here are some pics of the basement when I bought the house.











Starting the gut job.











Ripping up tile.



Lights wired in.







Starting to look like a proper shop.



Doing some cleaning.



Low hanging plumbing.



Plumbing fixed.





Sadly the washer and dryer have to be down in the basement.



Pulled down the rest of the framing.



Running some plugs, 8 on the wall one in the ceiling for the GDO.



Yanking out the sliding glass door.



Garage door installed.



Lighting recessed to clear the door.



Outside light installed.



How it sits right now.



This is about a year and a half worth of work but I have been working on it every weekend now. I will keep this updated weekly, and I hope you enjoy.

Im not sure yet. Its not going to be used as a full time garage, mainly parking for my weekend car and my restoration project.

I haven't updated in a few weeks, but I have gotten a lot done.

Wired the light above the door.



Hooked up the hot and cold water outside. Im a huge car guy and former detailer, this is the best thing I have ever done.



I then had a company come in and pour a slab of concrete.











Started painting the back wall. I would have rather had exposed brick on all the walls but someone "sealed" it before me with green sealer paint.



Then started to paint the support poles, they still need a few coats.



And how it sits now.





I still have a ton of work to do but its nice that its starting to come together. I will try to update this thread more frequently. Thanks for looking.

The M3 is currently my daily until I find another beater, but it will be my weekend/nice day car again soon. I am restoring a 1974 BMW 2002.

It was around $3500.

Was the area originally a garage and a PO installed the slider or was that original to the house?

A lot of grunt work was done to gut the area. I do not envy that but the finished work is what counts

The slider was there and the basement was "finished" when I bought the house. And I am south of Atlanta, Ill add it to my profile.

Nice. I like the exposed brick but painted is going to be easier to keep clean and it still looks cool. I highly recommend that you drywall the ceiling. I'm a firm believer in a need for a fire break between any kind of a working shop and the rest of the house.

I love it as its just how all my projects are done at home (garage or otherwise) - one weekend at time (and money) between all the other stuff in life that gets in the way! Im really looking forward to seeing how this turns out over the next year or so.

Northern tool for the light and the sensor is a plain old white one from Lowes that I spray painted black.

I dont know the exact dims but I will check that for you, and I can get you the guys number when I get off work tonight if you interested. It was a little steep but I had a couple other companies quote the job and never show back up so I took what I could get.

Also judging by your screen name and location, Im willing to bet that you have come into my work. I am one of the counter guys at Aircraft Spruce in PTC.

The red is not bad. Or maybe a Bavarian blue and you could do a purple as a blend between the two of them

looks like a great start. I second the need for a firebreak comment earlier. As far as the steps I would get rid of the carpet and go with a diamond plate with black rails. or if you are planning a wall stripe maybe look at duplicating that color. Even if you dont want the diamond plate look I would ditch the carpet.

Just seeing your car in there made me cringe (and encouraged my first post on GJ), all the exhaust fumes went up the stairs to your family!

Simple fix as I see it. External sealed door for basement access (typical garage access door): $250
Insulation on ceiling. Probably want to do this anyway: $500*
Vapor barrier, with some real sticky tape on all seams, boxes, staple holes: $70* (good tape, like say Tyvek, will cost as much as the plastic.
5/8" drywall for ceiling: $500 - $800* ($9 for a 4x8)

*don't know the dimensions on this so could be more.

And as long as we're picking nits: Get rid of that flexible dryer duct and replace it with a solid metal duct. The flex combusts.
Add some balusters to the stairs
Me personally, I would leave the carpet or at least some carpet on the stairs. I would probably fall on the uncarpeted stairs and you can wipe your feet on the carpet.

I did not change the structure of the house or anything on the exterior so I did not need a permit. You should have seen the really poor/exposed wiring I removed from the basement, along with the asbestos and the gas leak I fixed. The car gets backed in and shut off immediately, so maybe 30-45 seconds of running. I also have hard wired smoke and co detectors in the living area and basement, and I live alone so no concern for family. Eventually I will get the insulation and dry wall up on the ceiling, but I am still running wires, moving lights, etc etc.

I will eventually seal the door leading up the stairs and dry wall and insulate but I am not done with the electrical and lighting. I do plan on leaving the stairs carpeted for now and once the washer and dryer are in their final resting place I will hard line it(it is metal flex hose now.) I have moved them 3 times now.

Two of the walls are going white because they have green water sealer on them. The floor I'm probably going to go with a grey epoxy.

I did a little more painting tonight, but nothing photo worthy. I did pick up some art for the basement.
