Love the new project. There's a local BMW dealer (Otto's) that has an original 2002 in white in their showroom, love it. My Bro in law works there. I can get him to snap a pic if your interested.

I don't know whether you have already painted over the green wall, but where the wheelbarrow is sitting, that looks like black mold. Someone previously tried to seal that wall from water/moisture penetrating through from the outside. Having not seen any other pics of the house, you want to make sure that the ground behind that wall is sloping away from the house, and make sure that you have downspouts that direct the water away. If you haven't already painted that wall yet, which you probably have, I would recommend something like Dri-Loc or UGL to try and seal it up.

One other thing I am curious about, and I don't know how familiar you are with the construction of homes, but from YOU looking at all of the structure, were the basement stairs some sort of an afterthought? The reason I ask it the way the bottom of the stairs are cut short because of the brick wall, chimney, or whatever the brick is.

For safety reasons, an no, I'm no Safety Nazi by all means, but I would do something with the corner of the brick wall at the stairs. The reason I say that is that it may just save someones life. I would find some sort of a wood column and cut a "V" into it, mount it on the corner of the brick, then take some sort of indoor/outdoor carpet and cover the wood.

And the reason for that is #1.....you have your laundry downstairs. That means that you will be carrying a laundry basket down those steps. One trip, and if you, or anyone else for that matter would just happen to fall, a rounded off corner that is carpeted may possibly save a life over busting you skull wide open on a brick corner. Whoever put those steps in that area like that, had their head up their ***. That's what makes me think the stairs at that area were an afterthought.

If you have a bathroom above the washer and dryer, you might also think about putting a laundry chute in. It's easier to carry an empty basket down some stairs than it is a full basket.

As far as what you have done, it's looking great. It is a shame that you had to paint the brick walls. I think exposed brick inside of a structure adds character. And the red poles really set it off also.

I do have to agree with one of the remarks above in regards to the carpeted steps. Take the carpet off. It will be a trip hazard in itself. Your foot could slip on the edge depending on what type of soles you have on your shoes. I have never been a real huge fan of carpeted steps anyways.

All in all though, fantastic work on what you have done.

Cant believe you have done so much with the space. And great job on the stool, and the bench. You can tell your dad had alot of influence after seeing his bench in his garage. And the BMW's are the best part. My cousin is restoring a 2002Tii he imported out of Canada and seems to be an ongoing project also.

Its not really a "new" project, Ive had it 8 years. Haha I would love to see pics.

Don't get me started on that. We may end up moving the planes anyway, they might be putting a tower up at the field.

There was quite a bit of mold on the walls. I bleached all the walls before I painted. The yard slopes toward the front of the house and I am going to rip out the landscaping and build up the yard this fall. I ran some black drain pipe a few months ago and it seemed to help but I want to fix it right.

As far as the stairs, I most certainly think they were an after thought. The house was built in the late 40's so things were a little different. I have learned to live with them, as I dont know what I could do to fix them. Heres a pic from the upstairs door.

The contractor that built houses in this neighborhood back then must have had a thing for weird stairs. This is what my neighbors basement stair case looks like.

Im thinking about doing the m colors as a belt line stripe on the white walls but I dont know how it will look with benches. Or maybe a red stripe to line up with the red on the bench? I need to do some photoshops.

Re: My first post and basement garage build.

You have done a great job so far. Looks like a pretty cool space to be honest. With the cars being in their, have you thought about sealing the top door off to prevent CO2 from entering the house? Even as a precaution it might be worth grabbing some weather stripping or something.

I love your M3. Im an E36 guy myself as well. Your 2002 is awesome and I really hope you get to finish it! Ive been eyeing something similiar I found in an alleyway. Dont know if its for sale as I havent talked to the owner yet.

Sealing the door and dry walling the ceiling are in the plan. I just need to save money and finish all the electrical.

Keep at it! One comment on Kevin54's post on the mold, it might be worth checking the drainage on the other side of the wall so the mold doesn't come back.

Re: My first post and basement garage build.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I certainly need to get some flooring down. I'm thinking I'll epoxy it since it's roughly 40'x27' and that would be a lot of race deck. I tried this today I think it will look good with black stripes on the top and bottom.

I think I might paint back over it. Even with tape for brick and concrete I'm getting a lot of paint bleed.

Re: My first post and basement garage build.

Found a vise on Craigslist today. I got it dirt cheap.

289c2fc8b2618ca34f829359fd3c2612.jpg

And blown apart.

I have it soaking in vinegar right now and I'll try to get it painted this week. I'm still holding out hope that I'll find an old Wilton cheap but this will do for now.

I tried soaking the vise in vinegar but it kinda rotted out the plastic trash can I was soaking it in. So I picked up some stripper and soaked it down.

And a little victory drink and of course to show it's scale.

How hard is it to find jaws for that vise? Or are you going to make one/get one made? Looks nice. Paint it red?

I have the other jaw, the previous owner drilled the pins out for some reason. The other jaw was just in my car so I could take it to work and measure it for 4130 bar stock. I'm meeting with one of my customers this weekend thats an aerospace welder to fix the drilled holes and I will re-pin the jaw at that point. The plan was to paint it red but it looks pretty good raw, I may wipe it down with gun oil and leave it like it is, we will see how bored I get this weekend.

Re: My first post and basement garage build.

I don't think you can go wrong either way, painted or oiled.

The plan was red and then highlighting the raised letters black, Ill probably do it out of boredom this weekend. It depends on how good the football games are really. :D

Knocked out a little polishing on the vise.

I also have my aerospace welder friend picking my vise up tomorrow to fix the holes and get the jaw mounted. I'm thinking from the way they line up and as nice as they look they aren't the original jaws. They aren't going to be perfect but they will work for what I'm doing and until I get my wilton.

Try this one. Finish the ploishing and then do the letters in either red or balck? Just a suggestion.

The plan was red with black letters. Honestly I need to see what the welds look like and then I will decide if I am going to paint it or not. I might do a grey with black lettering or just black out the letters and spray it down with lps #3. I cant decide.

amazing difference. Well done.

This is my first attempt at polishing steel. I can make aluminum mirror out pretty quick but steel has been giving me trouble. Its not at all where I want it.

This guy here shows a good technique for stopping paint bleed. Don't know how it would work on brick, but may be worth a try.

http://garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=3771816&postcount=24

Thanks guys. I might try that guys technique later on but for now I painted over it.

I thought I would also post up my next project after the vise is finished. Getting my shed ready for bulk storage.

If you think the outside looks bad the inside is worse. The spiders pretty much own it now.

The outside doesn't look that bad, just way over grown. Put some shelves in it, clear out the brush around it and plant some flowers in the bed in the front and you're stylin'.

Re: My first post and basement garage build.

Since I dont have all my tools at my house I had to run out to my parents house to use my welder. Im a little jealous of my dads shop set up, and this is just part of it.

shop1.jpg

Next to the water heater is a (shear, brake, roller combo), next to that is an english wheel.

And my favorite thing in his shop, my great great grandfathers anvil.

vise1.jpg

Anyway, I got the holes welded up on the vise. I havent welded in a while, not perfect but I think it will hold up and look fine once painted.

My first post and basement garage build.

A little tip, take your time working on your projects. A wire wheel attached to your most powerful drill is not the best tool for cleaning rust off small parts.
