I haven't gotten much done lately in the shop since my dad and I are working on the annual inspection on the 182, but I did get to finally use my vice.

We decided to polish the spinner for the the 182 since we had the prop off. Heres what I started with.

I still have a long way to go but after a few passes its getting much better.

I might need to do a little light wet sanding to get the marks out at the top.

Awesome transformation. I like this basement shop. There were quite a few of them where I grew up and reading this thread took me right back.

I like your style, too, meticulous, thrifty, and a good eye for repurposing.

Kinda kills me that you painted the brick. It's SO damn cool and unique in a garage. I'd have said just up the lumens in the garage to compensate for it being darker, but I get it even if I'd have done differently. Everything's looking real good, congrats!

I painted the brick because a previous owner painted sealer over half the garage.

Nice to see everything coming along. I like the vice transformation.

Have you heard of the Hogjowl fly in on Lookout mountain? It is a wonderful time if you ever get a chance to go.
https://skyvector.com/airport/GE11/Hogjowl-Airport

I had a few customers of mine fly up there a week or so ago. Someday Ill go if I can get this annual finished and start on my ticket.

Also thanks for all the kind words everyone, I hope I can get the sign hung on the wall tonight.

Love the transformation and the attention to detail on the little stuff.

Hopefully you hit that spinner with some 2K wet sandpaper to get that scuff out. That thing looked awesome.

The spinner came out ok. I'm going to polish it again when it's mounted back on the plane.

I got the sign put up today. Now I need to clean the bench off.

Saw the box fan sitting on the '02, and I thought of my box fan filter.

You could really have used this when you started this whole thing, but it's never too late to collect dust!

Do you have a bench grinder with a polishing bonnet to mount on it? Might have made faster work of that vise handle than the Dremel.

Also, I see you live in a humid zone. Are you running a dehumidifier? I put mine next to my laundry sink:

I have a dehumidifier right between the washer and the sink draining into the sump pump.

Also funny you should mention the box fan. I was painting tonight and did this to knock down on over spray.

Cool!

Get yourself a quality air filter (3M Filtrete), tape it all around, and just let it run 24/7 on low speed, you'll be surprised at how gross it gets!

Are you using some kind of paint sprayer or flinger-wheel-type painter? I had been imagining you doing hours of drudgery with a big brush on that brick.

I am using a brush and it *****. Haha. I was spraying some airplane parts last night that's why I had the filter set up.

Since my dad has a new snap on box on the way I took the opportunity to snag one of his old boxes.

It's a bare bones base model craftsman box. It will be replaced but for now it's nice to get all my tools put up. I also cut and stained some 3/4" plywood I had laying around to put on the roller top.

While the stain was drying I got all my tools put up and cleaned up my bench.

The stain dried on the plywood.

I also finally got around to painting the horrible brass fireplace screen.

You painted the brass black? Hard to see in that pic. (Probably because you painted the brass black.)

How basic are the Cman cabinets? Are there ball bearings on the drawer slides? If so, not so bad, really, esp. for regular home shop guys iike us. Even if nylon glides, it's still good to be organized. Craigslist could provide an upgrade someday.

It wasn't real brass, it was just brass colored. It looked pretty bad. I need to see if I can find a before pic.

Edit: here is a before pic of the fireplace.

As for the tool boxes, they are bottom of the barrel non-ball bearing. Fine for now but they will be replaced soon I'm sure.

Nicely done on the basement shop. I'll be putting something similar together when my loan comes through. Biggest obstacle in mine is having the dryer and water heater on the same side as the garage door.

Ah. I've got ball-bearing CMan, Griplatch type drawer catches, and I like 'em plenty. Half-price, 1 y/o on Craigslist. What's not to like? :)

I picked up a heater today. Living in ga I won't need it too much but there are occasions where it will come in handy.

I bought the identical heater under the Kero-Sun brand name from Home Depot for emergency use. After Superstorm Sandy, we were without power for 13 days. I wanted to have some back up heat for next time.

What do you think about the safety of burning kerosene indoors as far as fumes and carbon monoxide? I haven't been able to find definite information on this subject. Do you have experience with kerosene heaters?

It should be okay. Fumes and carbon monoxide might be something to worry about but I crack a window and I have fire/co detectors in my basement. I dont need to run it long either, it heats up pretty quick.
