Great job! I bet your enjoying all the natural light in the new garage. What kind of wall stripe layout are you planning? Something like what I just did in mine, or something different?

I was thinking from the bottom up: grey, M stripe (light blue, navy, red about 1.5" wide each) and then white. Not sure what stripe you have, re-reading the whole thread now. I looks like it might keep me busy at work today... :lol_hitti

My wife sent some pics, she has been decorating... We actually set all this up this weekend, not sure if I have posted it. Some of my stuff actually made the decorating cut.

This is the adjacent wall in what we are calling the lounge, still plenty of stuff to go up but she got a start on it today.

She put her tailgate up above the tv in the living room. Yes you read that correctly.

And the adjacent wall in the living room. Her dad did the painting.

Speaking of the FIL, we put his art talents to work.

Lol! Thanks for checking it out. I would really appreciate your opinion/advice along the way. Great work on yours. I'm really liking seeing it all come together. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

Cool clock! You will be glad you took the extra time on painting when you get it all finished. I'm looking forward to seeing the progression.

You and me both.
Nice clock! I was going to make an oversized replica of the clocks in early 70s BMWs but I was having problems with the smaller chrome bezel/ring on the face. I went with the Porsche VDO clock, but some friends are pushing me to give the Bimmer one more thought.
The garage and house are looking great, I can't to see how the M stripes turn out.

Thanks, I love that VDO clock you made. If you ever make a tii clock I would probably be first on the list to buy one.

I got a little more painting done this weekend.

Untitled by mpower5266, on Flickr

Im going to need at least one more coat of white and probably two more coats of grey before I can lay out the stripes. I almost wish the garage was smaller......almost.

Untitled by mpower5266, on Flickr

I have the homelink in my Jeep set up to open my door but I have noticed lately it wasnt working very well. I thought it was the insulated door but then I saw a thread where someone bought one of these, apparently LED bulbs can mess with the signal. I installed this and it works like a charm.

Untitled by mpower5266, on Flickr

I then started working on this pub table. My regular bar did some renovations so the manager gave me one of the old tables.

Untitled by mpower5266, on Flickr

The idea was to have this to the side in the shop so when friends are over we would have a place to set down a beer and chat. I had a friend make a decal for me. It was free so I cant complain but it did not go well.

Untitled by mpower5266, on Flickr

Water got on the sticker and smudged it, the squeegee scratched it and when I woke up this morning all the glue had let go and it curled up onto itself. I need to re-think it and will probably just ask my wife to paint an roundel on there.

Garage is coming along good. Looks really nice with the fresh paint. That clock looks like it will light up half the garage at night.

Said no man ever........

I was just kidding, no one would ever want a smaller garage....unless they were painting it.

Since I am just basically painting right now and it doesnt really make for visually stunning photo updates, here are some pics of my dads new shop from yesterday.

Yeah about wishing the garage was smaller....... I really wish it was a little bigger now. I parked in it for the first time last night.

Untitled by mpower5266, on Flickr

Untitled by mpower5266, on Flickr

The plan was to park the jeep where it is, the m3 next to it and the 02 perpendicular to it in the side area. I grossly underestimated how big the 02 is.

Untitled by mpower5266, on Flickr

I could probably make that work, but the 02 is really tight on the door. I need to get the m3 over and play around with some parking. The good news is that it looks cool in there.

I think the Jeep is going to sleep outside.

Floor looks awesome. Your wife let you put car things in the master bedroom? You could make a lot of money selling your secrets!

Never enough Bimmers

Awesome build. Love the Bimmers! I've been building a garage for the past 2 years for my growing collection (E12, E30 cabrio, E30 Touring). Went to the opening of the ICON display at the BMWCCA Foundation last weekend. It was great.

Was planning to find a roundel flag for the garage but also need a clock. Yours gives me a new idea....

Thanks again for taking the time to share with this thread.

Good stuff. That 2002 needs LTWs, clears and a drop though. :)

I wish I could have made it to the opening but we hold our open house at work that weekend. I will get up to the foundation in the next few months. Thanks for taking the time to read my ramblings.

I think you got the flecks in the floor just about perfect!!

28439990188_10563ffb6d_b.jpg

I love the floor and it is going to look awesome when I finally get the stripes laid out.

Speaking of the stripes........ I was out of town all weekend so I didnt get anything done but I had a 10% off coupon at lowes and a bunch of left over gift cards from our wedding registry so I ordered this for my detailing supplies.

P170085_29z by mpower5266, on Flickr

I should be able to pick it up in a couple weeks. My dad has the diamond plate one and I like it, but I wanted something very simple and one color, this should be perfect.

Put down the last coat of white last night...... I am never painting again!!!!

Untitled by mpower5266, on Flickr

I also set up the wireless range extender in the garage. I plan of having a lap top and a tv with a firestick in the garage so I wanted to make sure I had a good connection.

Untitled by mpower5266, on Flickr

But most importantly, I kept the old fridge from the kitchen and now I have a beer fridge.

Untitled by mpower5266, on Flickr

Speaking of the kitchen, one of the subs came by yesterday and installed the cabinet doors under the sink. Our cabinet lady screwed up a couple times including the measurements of our farmhouse sink so the doors had to be custom built. The installation of those doors officially finished the house.....

Untitled by mpower5266, on Flickr

NO MORE CONTRACTORS!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, I will start on the stripes tonight.

Looking great. Next time you have to paint, make it a painting bbq. You'll have good company and it would get done very quickly.

So that Netgear extender just plugs into the wall? Did you have to get a new router that has the extenders, or are they an add-on? Just curious. I am behind on tech. I was the last one in my neighborhood to give up their rotary-dial phone. :)

This one plugs into the wall and basically extends the signal of your wired router. Plug it in, press a button on the extender, press a button on the router, and look for the new network. If your network is slik560homeinternet for example, the extender would make a second network called slik560homeinternet_EXT. Its not too helpful for devices like your phone because your phone doesn't switch between networks automatically but if you have a weak signal on one end of the house and a computer or smart tv is linked to the EXT connection it will improve speed. I think they make some that will flip connections but they are much more expensive.

I had one of those Netgear extenders once. It worked well for what it's supposed to do. But like you said, smartphones are too stupid to switch SSIDs on their own.

If you want a solution for a mobile device, mesh is definitely the way to go. I have the Google WiFi variety and it works fantastic.

Garage and house are looking great. Looking forward to that stripe!

So started taping off the stripes and peeled a piece off to adjust it and a giant section of paint came off. I had a few trouble spots when painting where I had to mud but nothing is sticking there now. I had one section where tape peeled everything off down to the dry wall. I hate painting and I’m beyond frustrated, I think I’m just going to paint it white.

Get a quart of primer for the mud. You'll avoid future issues if you take care of it now. I know it *****, but the end result will be that much sweeter.

I have all but given up on the m stripes, the paint just isn’t sticking. I did some sanding and it’s coming off in chunks. I think it’s back to the drawing board. Here are some pics of my failure.

You could bite the bullet while there is relatively little installed on the walls and just put down two full coats of primer on the walls, then try again. To test, start with either the wall in the photo showing where the paint sanded off or another short section. Since they are virgin walls, it may just need the base layers to make the foundation for your masterpiece. Rome wasn't built in a day and I know this has been a long process, but I'm confident you can get to the finish line. The Bimmer Garage still has hope!

I agree... I would definitely try to repaint the entire garage with two or three coats of sealing primer. I didn't catch it earlier or I would have mentioned it when you first started. You have to prime new drywall, especially over the taped/mudded spots. Go to a Sherwin-Williams paint store and see what they recommend too. Surely you can't be the first homeowner to accidentally paint new drywall without priming first and run into bonding issues. A good sealing primer should penetrate through the new paint and bond to both the exposed drywall and the previously painted wall. They may recommend a different type of primer for that application. After priming you should be good to go with whatever brand of latex paint you used, though I would probably pay the extra cost for the best 2-in-1 offered where you bought the original paint.

I had a crazy thing happen in one of our bedrooms years ago. My walls are plaster over drywall. I added a couple electrical outlets and the paint chipped away. I used a scraper to clean up the area a bit before I planned to patch it. Suddenly the entire wall spider webbed and "shattered". Layers and layers of paint fell off 90% of the wall like a shattered glass window. I freaked out and tested the paint that remained on the wall, a few chips, and the dust for lead paint since I was exposed to the huge dust cloud of this incident. The tests were negative but the layer of paint that remained on the wall felt very slick. I took a razor blade and scored the joints in the corners between the walls and the wall/ceiling. I wiped the wall down with a tack cloth, then tried painting it with Behr Premium Plus paint/primer. It wouldn't really stick. I scraped it off and used a Behr sealing primer. It took 3 coats but it bonded. Then I painted the wall with the Behr PP paint. It's been at least 12 years now and it's been repainted twice in different colors, but the paint has never peeled or chipped off.

Also, what kind of tape did you use to mask off the areas?

Standard white "masking" tape is garbage, it will peel off the paint it's applied too, but also let the wet paint bleed under it at the edge. The blue 3M painters tape works ok... but even being very thorough to press it down tightly, I've always had it bleed under the tape or it pulled off the paint like you experienced. The more expensive green frog tape works perfectly every time for me.

I still use the 3M blue painters tape, but only on my trim woodwork. I use the green tape on the walls themselves and my hardwood floors (if I'm painting the baseboard trim).

The tape is 3m multisurface bla bla bla, good tape.

I think the plan now is to fix the areas where I sanded, lightly sand the whole room, and prime.

My dad, who is awesome and retired, stopped by the house this morning to take a look at it. Everything peeled off with little effort, even the tape.

We think the wall was wet when they taped and mudded. Not sure what I am going to do, not sure if the builder will do anything for me.

I know it *****, but stick with your original plan. You will be much happier in the end. For what it's worth the 3M tan masking tape is not very good for painting cars or houses. It will peel the paint on house walls when you peel it up, and it does not peel off as well when you are finished as the 3M green tape when painting cars. 3M green tape is the way to go when painting a car, but it sticks too well in household applications. I use the blue painter's tape on the walls when bleed through or clean, crisp lines are not really an issue. But, on your BMW stripes I would use the green frog tape. I have painted stripes on household walls on several occasions, and always had great results. I also agree to go to your local Sherwin-Williams store and see what they recommend. I think a good primer would solve your issues. Just my opinion. Keep up the good work, and stick with it! You will be glad you did once all the hard work is finished.

Here are a couple examples of my uses of frog tape for painting stripes. I've always had good crisp lines without peeling any paint off.

My back garage/paint booth. The stripes are painted over a combination of wood paneling, brick, and concrete block.

I am no pro, but when I am trying to get a sharp transition between colors (either a stripe or a textured corner), I use the paint-over-the-tape trick.

To do this, you paint one of your colors, but paint it past where you want your transition line. Once dry, lay out your line with the tape. Then paint that same base color again over top of the paint and just past the transition. This allows the paint to do whatever seeping it will do past the tape. Since it's the same color as below it, it all matches. Let that dry. THEN paint your transition color over the edge of the tape and beyond into that new section. Before that fully drys, peel up your tape. You'll have a line as crisp as the edge of tape (usually pretty straight).

I hope that makes sense. This works with cheap tape or good tape all the same. I usually use **** tape because that's what I have on hand and it doesn't stay on the wall very long.

Probably not the issue you are having here but for others, make sure you dust off the walls prior to painting. The drywall compound dust will make it hard for the paint to stick. Just a quick brush with a broom can help.
