Long-time lurker....first time poster.

Last Wednesday, my wife and I closed on our first home. The house isn't too spectacular, but it's got character. 1080 finished square feet, plus 720 unfinished basement. Hand built by the seller's Dad in the '50s, and actually in pretty good shape. It has a similarly humble 2 car garage, 24' wide, but it's 28' deep, which is really nice. And a 16'x18' shed. But the really big plus for us is that it sits on 22 acres of wooded land. And, while it needs a septic system to pass County inspection, it still won't put us in debt for the rest of our lives (minimum mortgage payment is about half what our rent has been for years), even if we refinance in 3-5 years and build a pole barn on the property.

I had decided, first off, that I wanted to name it. Just for S's & G's. I'm not clever enough to come up with something, but I started looking to WWII planes for clever name ideas, and then I had an excellent idea. My Wife's grandfather was a navigator on B-24s in WWII, and the first plane his crew was assigned to was the Black Deuce, so we named it after that. We need to digitize the art from the back of his old Air Force jacket and make a sign of some sort....but that'll come once we get settled.

Onto the good stuff....pictures

When we first arrived after closing:

Regular picture that isn't quite as distorted:

And on Saturday, we had to make sure the fire pit in the back yard was functional:

As much as I'd love a lift, I have access to one at work for small jobs (I sling parts at a Subaru dealership, and there are always 6-8 empty hoists on Saturdays), so that'll probably wait for the pole barn. But a good work bench, bringing all of my tools (currently scattered between the little shed, work bench area in the basement, and trunks of my various cars), some serious electrical/lighting upgrades and a few other things need to happen here.

Congrats on the house and garage. I just moved into mine about a month ago. Not as much land but 5.5 will do for me...for now...haha. Good luck with it!

Congrats on the purchase. Your garage has plenty of potential and some real character to it. Good luck on the build/overhaul.

We've been busy moving (luckily we don't have to be out of our old place anytime soon), and working on other projects within the house. Mostly the bathroom floor.

But, some work done on the garage. Last weekend my wife hosted a bridal shower at our house, so I found some projects to do in the garage.

First off was another work bench. I found these plans online, which looked pretty close to what I wanted, and I went to work. It cost more than listed in the plans, but otherwise, turned out pretty great. It was wednesday or so before I was confident that the polyurethane was all dry and I could move it into it's final position. I still have to build drawers for it, but I'll get to that:

Then I made a trip to our old place and brought over my drill press, bench vise, bench grinder, and hydraulic press. I've also decided that the 32" TV that was hooked up to my desktop computer as a second monitor (almost never used the TV) will get mounted to the wall somewhere in this corner.

I also changed the oil in the 4Wheeler. Also, during the week last week I picked up this:

It was a bit of a gamble, as it's been sitting for years. But it was cheap enough, included the mower deck and snow blower attachments. And with a jump box and some starting fluid it would fire and run for a few seconds (meaning it had compression and spark).

Sure enough, some air in the tires, a new battery, a new fuel filter and line, and a carb kit, and she runs great:

I used it to help clear an area at the edge of the yard for my "tarp tent" that I had at the other place so I can get the boat and jet ski out of the garage. That's the goal for this weekend.

I haven't sprung for internet at the house yet, so overdue on updates.

Got the tarp shed set up, and put the boat, jet ski, and my extra sets of tires in it:

I love how much deep the garage is. I can park the 4 Wheeler and lawn mower side by side behind the old wood furnace, and still easily park my car there.

Brought my collection home. '89 Subaru XT6, '84 Subaru Brat (4" lift, 6-lug conversion), '87 4Runner (2" lift, Chevy 4.3 Swap, usually on 35" tires).

We started working on re-roofing both buildings. I took this picture from the top of the house:

Steel roofing went up pretty quick. Here's a picture of the house from the roof of the garage with it mostly done (still needed gable trim on that end, some ridge cap, and chimney flashing)

And a picture of the garage with it virtually all done (still need about a 2' chunk of gable trim on 3 of the corners):

Not much of an update on the Garage. I've been working on the cars, getting stuff put away/moved in, doing repairs on the new house, as well as helping my parents get our old house fixed up for resale.

I did a headlight restoration (wet sanding up to 2000 grit, followed by a little urethane for UV protection) on my wife's 04 Outback.

And took a picture of the whole "fleet" while they were all outside:

Also put a new set of Nokian Hakkapaliita R2 snow tires on it.

I love the way that new green roof looks in the sun.

I also got a decent picture of the house with the roof completed:

No major updates on the garage, still getting situated, and working on some projects in the house. Mainly getting doors and windows sealed up better. I'll be replacing windows this summer, that's for sure!

But, there have been a few things in the garage. The old lawn tractor has been serving fantastically as a snow blower this winter. But since I'm usually blowing (unless it's a weekend) before 6AM (leave for work around 7:30, earlier if the weather is bad), it badly needed an upgrade in the lighting department. And it had to be a lower draw than the original 35W lights, as the magneto on this thing is not designed for big electrical loads (the lights are the only electrical draw other than the ignition and battery recharge). So I went with a pair of 18W LED Flood lights from AuxBeam, and mounted them to the hood. They look a little goofy, but not only is it by far the simplest installation, but mounting them higher than the originals gives better vantage over the blower.

These are excellent, exactly what I want. Bright, nice wide beam pattern, and with 2 separate units, I can aim them a bit to the sides, and get a really wide spread of light.

I finally mounted up my ********* Friday purchase. 40 ft extension cord reel, with a triple tap and 20 amp circuit breaker in it (even though the circuit currently has a 15 amp fuse in it, but that will change this summer with a complete rewire of the garage). I mounted it just inside the garage door, so it can reach anywhere in the garage, and out into the driveway, too.

And, my uncle gave me his old Craftsman toolbox for Christmas. It fits perfectly on top of the little black no-name one I had before. Not sure if I'll leave it there or not, as it's a bit to high to be really useful, but I don't really have another place to put it. Might move the black one to a shelf under the bench so the red one sits lower. Also built a simple bookshelf for my shop manuals and such.
