The boys get a FORT!!

The kids where getting bored with the "low level" play structure, so I decided they needed a proper "fort". Over a few days of busting my *** (building everything on top of a 9 foot structure is a pain!) it's coming along. The youngest really got into helping at a couple points! I used an OSB/siding project called Hardi-Board - very durable stuff. Inside has some benches and I'll add some shelving.

Just gotta install the cedar shakes (At $50bucks a bundle they better look good!)

sweet! I had a fort/playhouse style thing that was raised about 4 feet from my 12'x12' sandbox. It was like a home to me when i was a kiddy back 10 years ago eh!

Forgot to mention - Next weekend will be PHASE II! I'm gonna cut a hatch so they can walk out over the swing set part. I'll put down a floor and some railings, so they can have a walk-way, or a "shooting" platform, then they can scoot back into the fort if needed!

Awsome. I was actually at my parents today in the old fort my brother and I built. It started as a 4 x 6 platform then a 5 x 8 shed was added to one end (7' in the air). Then when me and my brother were in our teens my father and I boxed in the area underneath to form a two story shed. Wish I had taken pics while I was threre. Actually amazing it still standing as Me and my bro built the shed with 2x4s on 24" centers. Again keep up the good work.

E-tek looks great!! we have a similiar play set for our 5 yr old twins, one word of advice we had to fix or brace those corner posts with 2x4s my girls are 50 lbs each and from high swinging they were cracking the corner posts ,it is a brand new set, now that you added all that upper weight test out 1 boy on the swing and one up above see how that bad boy flexes. you might have to shore it up a bit. great job cool fort. mad57.

Sweet! I used to love additions to the Tree Fort when I was a kid. My Dad was a general Contractor so we always had material laying around. Good show!


Just FYI...Cedar Shakes are Grooved and rough. Shingles are flat and smooth! =)

Hey Mad - you bet that thing flexes BIG time! When they are on the swings the entire structure rocks back and forth. I looked and thought and tightened and thought some more over the years and decided it was meant to do that!
Before I built on top I did square it up and torqued all the fasteners, plus I installed the ground stakes I had never put on....so it's fairly square and should stay put....
But I'll definitley be keeping an eye on it!

e-tek - You make me want to build a fort now too. Just a few things. First of all, definitely put some low level lighting in/around that thing. All those open ports will look bad *** lit up at night. Also, how about installing a zip line off the the new walk-way to a nearby tree or anchor? That's what I'm seriously contemplating doing from the top of our swing set. I should be able to go about 50' from the monkey bars (top of swings set) over to my deck. Anyway, can't wait to check out phase II. Great job so far!
