Hand gas torch brazing isn't near as common as it used to be, but electric arc and furnace brazing are still heavily prevalent in certain industries.

Hardly forgotten. Just used it last weekend to create a brass leadscrew nut because I didn't have brass stock in the major diameter for a tophat shape but could make it up out of a piece of round stock and a piece of flatstock brazed together and turned to match. The joint is practically invisible and saved on time and money in the process. Regularly butcher gas fittings together to make a custom piece. But yeah, my TIG welder replaced a lot of need for brazing fiddly things I couldn't weld before.

Thanks for posting the link to the book. I've been trying to learn to braze for awhile, sort of off and on, trial and error stuff. I've been doing alright laying in a bead in flat position and making a strong joint, but I want to learn how to build up some thicker material to fill in cracks. On some of the machining videos I saw on YouTube, these guys are fixing cast iron cracks by grinding them out and filling in with braze material. Sometimes they seem to be able to fill areas that look to be as much as 1/2" wide by 1/4" deep and one or two inches long. Maybe the info in the book can give me some tips.

I was always told it was a cheap, less strong, way to weld.
But I was still in grade school when I saw a color photo of a Lotus F1 front A frame with brazed web fillers.
(The color showed the brass against the steel very well.)
Ever since I have thought the if it was good enough for F1 it should be good enough for anything I want to do.
