I stumbled upon your thread this morning and could not stop reading. I have been thoroughly impressed with everything you have done; home, shop, car(s) both present and past. I love the Fairlane and agree with you on the gassers. You seem to take your time, have a plan and are very methodical and it really shows in everything you do. As I am so late to post, there is little left to say that others have not - I'm at a loss for words. I have really enjoyed reading this thread and will hit it again tonight to soak in some more and let it marinate. Thank you for sharing your place and yourself with all of us. You and your wife have much to be proud of my friend.

aqr81 ( Larry ) Thank You so much for the kind words. Going through other threads on here, I have learned alot as well. There is so much knowledge /ideas on this board and with it's members, it's tough to take all in. (I have to marinate too LOL!) There is such a variety of garages on this forum, from the single apartment style to the 25 car palace. I am glad you enjoyed the thread so far, I plan on posting improvements as I go. I like commenting with great folks like yourself. I enjoy helping others on here, that may have questions in areas that I have experienced. Things that have worked, things that haven't. Thats what makes this Garage Journal so great. It's fun to go through somebodies thread and see a neat idea that could work for you. Thats why I started this thread, maybe give and idea or two. I put pictures out here not "to show off" ( and I hope it doesn't come across that way) but more to show others some ideas that maybe they are looking for, in the quest for their ultimate garage. This open styled box was my great Aunts. She stored all of her ceramic paints in the top, brushes and other stuff for ceramics in the drawer below. It still smells like linseed oil when you open up the drawer. I used to store my one shot paint cans in it and carried it around from job to job lettering racecars and trucks. After a couple of years of doing that, I realized how stupid that was. Besides the fact it wouldn't hold all the colors I had. I am amazed I didn't get paint all over it.

Well John, besides trying not to freeze to death, I think the gas pump will be the major project, as well as organizing/ building some cabinets and such. My wife has that toolbox in the house and is using it as a decoration with stuff in it. It is a neat accent piece in the house. All the wooden toolboxes are in the house, there is too much temperature/humidity change out in the garage for those boxes.

As far as not getting paint all over that particular box, I am still amazed. I can't even take a lid off one shot cans without getting it all over my hands.

Here is a couple of shots of my metal workbench. It is 50" x 40" x 36" tall ( with casters on it) I got this bench about 20 years ago when they were discarding it at work. After seeing some of the great workbenchs on this site, I decided to clean mine up a bit, so with some sanding disks, paint and alot of cleaning, this is how it turned out...

I'd go with simple, white Semi Truck swirls. You know, those wide,thick ones we all see on trucks and trailers. And, OF COURSE, flames on the welding cart.

I found this poor little old trash/rag can out on the garbage dock. It was saying to me "please don't send me to the county dump!" So of course I had to take the little orphan back to my place and give him a new home. It will make a nice place to store all the dirty rags from cleaning up the Fairlane. It has a footpedal bar that opens when stepped on, and It still works like a charm! Possibly an Ed Roth style monster with the lid being his mouth?? the possibilities are endless.

I think that's a safety can for oily rags, since you pile enough of them up and they will spontaneously burst into flames. Also looks a bit like the oil bucket I used in shop class decades ago for quenching/hardening steel.

Hey 787B and aqr81, I'm almost possitive they used the can for stain rags which were very flammable. Still not sure why it was tossed. Stay tuned for the tranformation of it in the next couple of months. JC23 has challenged me to a contest with him ( as he has a similar one that he wants to re-do as well) so we are gonna have a battle of the killer cans shortly letting the GJ members vote on their favorites. It should be a blast. Jc23 is a talented guy.

Thank You M.James, The beautiful yard is covered in leaves right now LOL! as far as the tools go, started as a kid with my first car that needed worked on, bought tools as I needed them, some were my dads, garage sales, flea markets... stuff like that, and stuff some people just didn't want anymore. I've been collecting stuff for years.

Hey there Franklee, I did alittle research after I posted that picture and found some info on it, but I didn't see the web site you posted... thanks, I will check it out. It's a cool old vise. I doubt i will be using it for sharpening handsaws ( do people still use those?? LOL) especially with all the power saws today. but I got a few good old handsaws collecting dust in the shop, and who knows, someday I may try my hand at sharpening them. Thanks again, Breeze

OK, as Breeze wrote, he and I are having a little contest and we'll want GJ members to help us determine which rag can got the better paint job.

The background is that both the Breeze and I paint as in signs, monsters and pinstriping. So it's a friendly contest between two pinheads. And who could be a more fair judge than our bros and sises on GJ?

Now, both of us are busy guys and will likely not get to the painting part until into the winter season. But stick around and as soon as one or both of us has something to post, rest assured it will be up here.

Oh, and if you want to join in on this nonsense, there are a number of ways. Have a old time rag can? Maybe it's time for some crazy paint. And for you armchair painters, start throwing some ideas our way. Who knows, we may run with one or two. We've come up with one simple rule - you have to do the custom paint yourself.

So to accept this challenge from Breeze, here's mine as of today.

It's nothing I could paint myself, but one idea might be painting the appearance of a jagged hole in the side of the can with a raging fire inside and a Roth type monster outside the hole with a can opener on the ground, a burnt match in his hand and looking out at you with a maniacal smile.

Thats a cool idea Mike, I've got mine pretty much figured out in my head how I want it to be, JC on the other hand, needs all the ideas he "can" come up with. Thanks for the input, I may have to think this out a bit more.

No problem Britt. I thought when I first saw it, it may have been a small metal break of some sort. The Guy I got it from had a ton of old hand saws, makes sence now. I have no idea how to sharpen a hand saw, even though I have the vice to do it, and 4 dull handsaws. I'm gonna have to do some research this winter

I do just about anything except electric signs. Mostly truck/boat/racecar lettering in vinyl, some pinstriping, glass etching,cartooning and signs. I work a full time job days (engineer at a furniture factory), and my sign shop nights. Sometimes it's 2 full time jobs, but during the winter months things slow down. After 12 years at the furniture job,I quit and tried doing the sign biz full time for three years, but it's nice to have a gauranteed paycheck each week and medical benefits, The guy that replaced me quit, and they wanted me back, so it was a win, win situation for me. Thanks for inquiring stangkid, how about yourself? What kind of stuff do you do? You happen to have a rag can to join in the madness? Been busy working on the Killer Rag can, Then Winter hit. As of today, we "officially" got 36" of snow since Sunday. We have 4 - 5 foot drifts as well. Living in Western NY is great if you like snow. Can you say Lake Effect? I thought you might enjoy these pictures. I appolgize for them being a little fuzzy, but I think you'll get the idea.

Holy moly. I aint ever seen anything like that. Looks awesome and so totally removed from our weather here down on Oz. Even our so called 'snow fields' dont get coverage like that. Whats it like dealing with daily living tasks when it snows that much?

Well, When you lived here all your life. Winter driving skills kick in early. I have a 4wd Ford Truck that gets around pretty good, the Magnum on the otherhand is worthless in snow even with it's traction control. I drive through it in the morning, clean up the driveway when I get home. I have a tractor with a plow, but I don't like plowing until the driveway gets "packed" down a bit as to keep the ever loving task of raking stones back into the driveway come Spring. I hope I can plow this back or I will really be screwed. It came so fast and quick I Didn't have much of a choice. It took me 3 1/2 hours Monday night, 3 hours Tuesday night, and 3 hours Wednesday night to clear the driveway with a snowblower, we got around a foot each day. Wednesday the wind had died down a bit, so it was more managable. Still trying to figure out how to get the drifted snow off the roof. It's metal, slippery, but with all that snow, I guess it wouldn't be too far a fall.

You got to admit though, all the pics do look pretty awesome with all of that snow. A couple would make for a pretty good Christmas card.

I'm dreading the day when we start getting heavy snows. I HATE WINTER!!!!!!!! We have had a little bad weather with some blowing snow that made the roads icy but nothing close to that. I have a feeling that this winter is going to be the opposite of what we had this summer. We were in a drought all summer, so now snow will probably make up for it.

Man I hope that roof holds up under all that weight. I had an idea you can use your saw vice for, it could hold a sign so you can paint , or letter it. Nice homestead.
