I cut the old rotted end rafters off and put in some temporary 2x4s to hold everything in place. The old stuff was barely there, between the splices, rotted wood and other **** one side just fell apart as I hit it with my sawzall.

I'm going to replace them with new rafters framed into the new wall, it looks like I'm going to end up with about a 7" gap between the old and new spaces.

Just catching this. Good to hear the C is still staying away and that your friends stepped in to help when times were rough. Some interesting build techniques you're using. Keep up the good work and posting.

"Interesting"? That's much nicer than my wife and friends call it.

I had great plans for it all to being top notch and maybe even straight when I started, now I'm just going for "finished" and dry. I never met the man who I bought this house and barn from so I don't like to talk bad about him but he sure left me with some interesting things to fix or rebuild.

Let's just say I'm really happy that I don't have to worry about building inspectors where I live. :bounce:

Really interesting project(s). I guess I would call your method as "Visionary Opportunistic." The ability to see what you want in what you have and to integrate what comes along as you go along.

I figure by the time I'm all done I'll have saved no less than $51 by saving/incorporating the old structure instead of just leveling it and starting fresh. :rocker:

This evening I got most of the end wall framing done.

I temporarily supported the old loft portion just to the left out of this shot so I could officially separate the old and new structures. I still need to do the same on the other corner but this one was much more tied together.

My next step is to somehow get new 2x6 end rafters without tearing out too much of the old stuff. My plan is to finish the framing and then sheet and flash the new structure like the old stuff isn't even there. I should end up with about a 7" wide gap between the 2 when I'm done. Way down the road I'm going to reskin the old loft space after a lot of wood repair and I'll tie the sheet metal together filling in that gap but for now they'll be completely separate.

I took a break from building and a buddy came over to help get my compressor up on a pallet rack shelf I built.

I don't know if your compressor will run quieter of cooler up there but you certainly won't have an excuse for not draining the tank.

I think I'm going to relocate the air intake to somewhere down lower, it was noticeably hotter up at the filter level than at the ground and that was just with us working on a 90 degree day. It was amazing to stand under that thing and see where the drain is screwed into the bottom of the tank, I've got a pneumatic auto drain but I may end up installing something on a timer.

good to see you back at it. that is a LARGE compressor! I understand the 90's and humidity. still we have not hit 100 yet. in 2011 we had 99 plus days at triple digits.

She's 80 gallon but it looks a LOT bigger when you're standing under it looking up. :p The under side of that tank is quite possibly the dirtiest, nastiest thing in my shop and that's saying a lot.

I even rolled my 3 HF boxes under the shelf, 2 of them will live there once I get the bench frame built and the other will end up in a second bench in another part of the shop.

We also mounted an air hose reel that I bought a while back from Northern Tool.

I'm going to run a temp hose to it from the compressor so I can use it until I pipe the shop permanently with a 3/4" Maxline kit.

I got most of my lights hung and a few of them wired on a temp basis so I can get some work done at night when it's below 110 degrees. It's way brighter than I expected with just 6 of the 9 fixtures on, I'm quite happy with how it's turning out.
