This man cave is being built on my family farm (there used to be a two story chicken coop here). It's roughly 2,800 sq ft down stairs and 36'x36' loft.

I'm having a hard time with door design - as the 14'x14' openings are not working as designed. Help...

That is a beautiful looking place you got there. What part of the country are you in?

Also need advise for suspending an I Beam from the rafters. I'm have a 2 ton electric hoist that I want to span the high bay into the loft (about 30' span). Only one end of the beam will be supported by a post. Any suggestions?

I found a picture of the high bay doors being built. Not a good design.

Can't help you with your questions but that's a great looking building you have there.

Do you have room to add regular garage door behind it and just keep the ones you currently have up on the outside to keep up with the look/theme from the outside?

I could use a roll up door but I didn't want to lose the barn look. I found a company that sells an honeycombed panel that is strong and light (they guarantee no warping) but is very expensive - and you still have to finish the exterior.

I'm also having a hard time finding large strap hinges that don't cost a fortune...

Wasn't sure if you were going for the barn look inside too. Or if you were going to go a little more modern. That's way I suggested keeping the barn doors outside but have the rollup doors inside(behind them).

I see where you were going. The inside will be a combination of hemlock tongue & groove mixed with antique barn wood.

Also need to find space to fit a 1" gas line here? My builder told me it would be ok to run pex line under slab. A no, no I later learned.

My buddy completed the av rack in my shop. This is built into a closet under the stairs.

Where did you find that design? I would love to have a shop that looks like a barn.

I bought the plans online and then made some changes. The shop sits on a family farm dating back to the late 1800's and I was trying to preserve the look.

Thanks.

It seems you're awfully late in the design process to be hanging a two-ton hoist from the rafters. Unless those are some seriously stout rafters, they won't support it. You'll need to locate it so that you can place posts under both ends, and those posts will require adequate bracing to withstand the loads. You NEED an engineer to design that hoist mounting for you, if you want to still be alive after lifting a load on it, anywhere near its capacity.

I agree on the engineer idea! It was reviewed by an architect and one end is properly supported by a post - the other end will have an A frame coming off the glulams. I just need some ideas on how to manufacture the brackets to attach to the rafters 2x12.

Hi, I actually manufacture large scale doors Australia. What you need is to brace your doors from the top leading edge down to the bottom hinge point. This will stop your doors from dropping. Also if you want to control the warping or twisting of your door frames, the best thing to do is use threaded rod with nuts on each end. This will allow you to put tension on the doors diagonals and stop the twisting/ correct it.
Hope this helps

My shop is out in the boondocks of Western NY and I live in Houston - so to view my property I purchased one of Costco's security camera kits and use Hughes Satellite for internet connection to access camera feed.

Here is what I see when logging in.

Boiler is almost done. We ran the vents thru the roof today (always scary drilling thru the roof!)
