That depends on what part of the US you live in.

What part of the US would that railing meet code? Pretty sure they won't meet the 4" max sphere baluster spacing requirement.

And thirdly, the code is more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules.

The code is what you would call "minimum guidelines" so you have to meet or exceed them. That one handrail with no balusters would not meet US code "guidelines". That would be an interesting conversation with the building inspector when you try telling him that the IRC is just guidelines and you don't have to follow any of them since they aren't rules.:wtf:

Those are a long way from meeting any kind of US construction code.

if you use the same principle but hang a glass panel that stops 4" from the stairs, then you'D meet code as you'D have handrail AND no >4" spacing.

I still think that setup is the only way you can truly show that everything floats.

Those stairs would freak my dog out to no end.

I would put a 2-4" gap between the steps and the glass, showing that they are not connected.

I agree BeachBoy, I think that there actually is a space in the pictured one - if you compare the 3rd step from the top (the last one before the ceiling) in the 2 photos, the perspective changes.

I have been a professional window cleaner for 37 years and would not want to clean that glass wall in that staircase! It would be a real cluster f-ck.

Alright OP, we know you have been around: Last Activity: 09-13-2014 06:16 AM

How about an update?

I think I've figured it out JVB, he just doesn't love us anymore. He's leaving us. Leaving us for another lover. After all we've been through together, meant to each other, it's over. All the support, being there through the good and bad, he's leaving us for another lover. Tossed away like a dirty dishrag. :headshake And all this time we really thought he cared about us, loved us. :( Sigh, Time to move on and find another awesome concrete build full of vision, ingenuity and hard work.

Actually he's stated many times that he isn't doing large updates that are pic worthy right now so that's why this thread hasn't been updated.

Also he doesn't have to show us, he did it being nice, I think a few of you are a little bit demanding for something that is a favor.

I think most of us understand that. It's the fact that this is such an outrageously cool build that every little detail keeps us enthralled. This is so much beyond anything the vast majority of us will ever see, let alone be a part of. I'm usually not a fan of new builds, but this blows my little mind and keeps me on the edge of my seat. I hope the OP understands our teasing and how much we admire this incredible build. I think I can safely speak for most of us that we greatly appreciate his documentation and allowing us to ride along on this sweet build. Now give us an update.;)

Seriously though, thanks again for education and entertainment

Thank you mdbeck1.
You probably already know that is from the movie Goldfinger.
Back in the days when USA could get to the moon.

Honestly how did Doug even find the time to post this build?

Between, building a house, and running a business and having a family? I'm still utterly amazed on how much one human being did so much in so little time. And work that is totally off the charts on design, and perfection.

Plus most of these posts are in good fun, a good bit of tongue in cheek

To all of my GJ friends, my sincere apologies. I haven't posted in a very long time. The good news is that you haven't missed much. Progress has been slow due some significant personal distractions. I'll try to do an update soon but rest assured that I'll keep you informed as we try and finish this thing up. Cheers!

No apology required, I think we all understand that "life happens".

We are a bit like seagulls though, waiting for you to throw another morsel in our direction.

I sincerely hope that all is well with you and yours.

He is NOT spending the winter in the RV that I can assure you.

The wife would be gone if that was even an option heheh.

Doug,

We all understand. But following your project is just so addictive. Hopefully, your distractions will be remedied, the house and garage will be finished, and you can start on the Willys.

I'm looking forward to the Willys build too.
Ever since watching Hot Rod (the movie - no, not the recent comedy, the car one made in the '70s) I've loved 'em. :3gears:

To all of my GJ friends, my sincere apologies.

First post here on GJ and I have to say this is one of the most impressive builds I have seen. I have read the whole thing from the beginning and it's been a thrill to see the progress, build quality and attention to detail.

I can also understand the slow down and potential delays, when you get to the end of something as massive as this, it's only natural for things to slow down. It's at this stage you want to take your time and not rush to get things done, take your time and do it right as you have from the very beginning.

It looks great LLWillysfan, do an update when you can, we'll be waiting.
