I'd agree... if it was my place I'd sure as hell be using MC/BX with all the metal studs.

Pretty sure NEC requires it even.
Type NMB is perfectly fine and code worthy in steel studs as long as you protect it with grommets.Very typical for commercial construction.I think I would opt for metal boxes though.Hey mister concrete man...I don't see any purple primer on your PVC joints.:dunno: My inspector wouldn't be pleased.:willy_nil:lol:

^^ you should change the setting to more posts per page, it's 51 pages here, much less page-changes to read the thread ;)

Mr. Onetwo you bring back a horror in my house build. Wife called and said the inspector just faild the rough in due to no primer. I let the plumber have it (it was me) and said how the heck did I forget primer?? Used the clear and not the purple. Was a big hassle.

I lost track of this thread while between jobs and still in NY. Now that Iam in Maine and looking at property up here this build is in the top .001% in the entire state maybe New England. You jut don't see anything like this anywhere.

My wife linked me back up with it due to the idea of the Pot Belly stove in the reading room. We have an old pot stove from my father-in law who got it out of an old Caboose he used to work on when he worked for the Railroad. She is now excited to find a home where we can also showcase it in honor of her dad.

There are so many incredible aspects to this build. God bless man you have a true castle to call home!

Looks great man! Question- can you send me details on your front door?(who/what/where) I am doing nearly the exact same thing, except my pivot hinge will be embedded in the floor ( I left a pocket for it) so there is no sill.

That was kind of an inside plumbers joke!;) Actually, the new code in Maine does not require purple anymore...clear is acceptable.Welcome to Maine...beautiful place to live:thumbup:hard place to make a living:( Good luck in your property search!:D

No worries Stevn. If you're going to put your project out there, you better be prepared for the response - both complimentary and critical. I've found that the folks on GJ usually mean well and often provide valuable insights.

We're in a bit of a lull while we continue with the rough in but I hope to have some more interesting updates to share soon.

Thanks for your interest and kind comments.

I'd be happy to share the details. The pivot door is manufactured by the same company that provided all the exterior doors and windows - Arcadia. Our door also requires a recess in the floor for the pivot hinge. One nice feature is an integral closer that pulls the door shut. If you want more info, please feel free to PM me.

I use that expression all the time and it proves itself more true every day. I have complete confidence in my plumber and am confident he is using the proper methods and materials including clear solvent.

To all my GJ friends, I'm sorry for the lack of updates. There just isn't much to share. It's damn cold and just getting vehicles up and down the road is a challenge. And yes, the campah experiment is proving to be one of my less inspired ideas. nevertheless, we're making progress and I should have an update to share soon.

Quite the experience?

Who knew, this one be one of the worst winters on record. Heard from a friend yesterday that the Great Lakes are freezing over. He had heard from his brother who lives in Michigan

The weather channel was reporting that Flint had over a 110" of snow this year :willy_nil Cases of cabin fever galore.

Its true about the Great Lakes - about 90% frozen. Not looking forward to all the dead fish that show up when it thaws...

The second most frozen area on the great lakes in history.
They say it will bring a much cooler summer (and dryer) for the regions around.

I think the fish would just go deeper. Come to think of it they probably are deeper anyways during the winters.

Have enjoyed following this thread for several months. You're vision was amazing, to see this fortress on the river bluff and then bring to reality is mind numbing to me. Moving in day is going to be so sweet!
The real testament to your success in my mind is the fact your wife has lived with you through the worst winter you may ever see in a fifth wheel trailer on the job site! My hat is off to the both you! Thanks for sharing this!

Ahhh gotcha.. Never thought of it that way. I mean lakes freeze over every year all over the world. Some for more than half the year.

What happens is when the ice/snow layer gets too thick, it blocks off the sunlight to the plants in the lake, and they stop producing oxygen. From the Minnesota DNR website:

The retreat of lake and stream ice can sometimes leave a grim reminder of winter's effects: dead fish.

In most cases the dead fish result from a normal process known as "winterkill." When snow and ice cover a lake, they limit the sunlight reaching aquatic plants. The plants then cut back on the amount of oxygen they produce. If vegetation dies from lack of sunlight, the plants start to decompose, which uses oxygen dissolved in the water. If oxygen depletion becomes severe enough, fish die.

Winterkill potential is worse in winters with abundant or early snowfall. Lower autumn water levels increase the probability and severity of winterkill. Early ice-on and late ice-out dates also increase the winterkill potential. Wetlands and shallow, soft-bottom lakes are more winterkill-prone than deeper, hard-bottomed lakes.

Some species of fish are more vulnerable to winterkill than others. Trout require the most oxygen. Bluegill and largemouth bass also are moderately sensitive to lowered oxygen levels. Walleye, northern pike, carp and crappie species have intermediate tolerances, while bullheads and fathead minnows are the most tolerant of low oxygen. Winterkills seldom result in the death of all fish in a lake. Lakes with regular winterkill events are usually dominated by bullhead species.

Winterkill can have some beneficial effects. In lakes with overabundant panfish, winterkill can result in increased growth rates and less competition for survivors. It also can greatly reduce carp abundance, allowing for improved water quality and increased success of subsequent fish stocking efforts.

Hello all. You've all been so busy talking about the winter habits of various fish species, I almost don't want to intrude..

Actually, I haven't got a lot to share because we haven't accomplished a lot. We've hit a bit of a lull but I figured I better throw something up before the conversation gets any more far afield.

The best I can do is to share a spring ritual in Maine - Ice Breakers!

The Coast Guard breaks up the ice in several Maine rivers to reduce the risk of ice jams and flooding. There are three of them. This is Bridle and Shackle. They make their way in tandem along the channel. Sometimes they charge right along;

When they encounter thicker ice they have to power through it.

Meanwhile, the third member of the team, Tackle works her way back and forth in the wake of the others breaking up the ice into smaller pieces.

It's a sure sign of spring when the cutters show up and everyone along the river view them with affection.

Meanwhile the Concrete Underground plods along. The plumber and electrician have picked away at the rough in but I'm the biggest hold up. I've been working at rubbing the interior concrete walls. It was too cold by the time I had the time to tackle this project so I had to wait for the structure to be closed in and heated.

To be honest, I've always been a little disappointed with the finish on the exposed architectural walls. The external vibrators created more problems than they solved and the walls need some work. The biggest problem was discoloration caused by form leakage.

Unfortunately the only solution is grinding. Here's a shot of one of the walls in process.

I'm using a Bosch grinder with a dust collector vac to cut down on the mess and the health hazard. It's a lot of hard work I wish I'd avoided.

I'll put up more on the process in a day or two. The finished product looks fine it just goes to show ya, no matter how long you do something there are always hard lessons to be learned.

I think the pace will pick up the pace soon. I'm going to start formwork for a cool cantilevered concrete staircase as well as form up the concrete mantel and hearth at the gas fireplace.

Now back to our regular programing

Happiness is opening up the Garage Journal Gallery and finding "The Concrete Underground" at the top of the page with a fresh post by LLWillysfan.

Ice breakers in Maine are a sign of Spring. Learn something new every day. Here the sign is Daffodils.

Your grinding picture did not come through. But I can imagine it is nasty.

Is the grinder a special tool or just a standard angle grinder with an attachment that gives greater enclosure to allow the vacuum to be more effective?

Looks like a chore, see if you can find one of these locally..

This and good tooling with make a ugly job a little prettier....

Nice shots of the "ice team". I think if I knew more about the Coast Guard I'd spent less time in the Navy!

Is there anything you could have done differently regarding the walls?

Yea, I'd have skipped the external vibrators. The best surfaces I got were after I sent them back and used a little 1" high frequency internal ********. Just took my time and dropped it every 6" or so near the form surface.

Because they shake the entire form, the external vibrators increased the form pressure more then I anticipated. Even though we placed in lifts we ended up with full liquid head pressure, which caused the formwork to open up just enough to let water seep out. Once that happens, you get color variations. Ironically, the last placement was the worst.

It's probably based on a standard grinder but has a full shroud and a handle to make it easier to control. It works well on flat surfaces.

Looks like a chore, see if you can find one of these locally..

I considered similar tools but they look pretty heavy - I figured they would be difficult to hold against a vertical surface. Maybe I was wrong.

so with the concrete fireplace, you can heat the whole thermal mass of the house by the fireplace and have all walls warm throughout the house?

I have read that thermal mass with concrete houses doesn't work well when you only consider solar because it woul dneed a large concrete surface exposed to solar radiation to heat the concrete mass... but I guess the fireplace solves all this where you can heat the mass with a simple fire.

Look at the bright side.

You are "almost" there, and in the end, after all the grinding... you will look like Johnny Bravo.
