I don't think I could ever get that level of polish with a wire wheel. It's got to be more than that!

And did he carve those steampunk shaped into it? I've not seen a vice with tail fins and such an anvil-like anvil before.

Fugio: the Craftsman vises do come like that only in red and that Ebay seller has a rep of shining his up probably with a deburring wheel and not a wire wheel only. here's one he sold last year that might have been a little shinier and to add some pictures to your thread because those Ebay ads will disappear some day.

the red Craftsman I posted might not be the exact version of the shiny one you are talking about, but you get the idea of a before picture.

I have the same vice, but it's a *************. 3 of the screw holes that hold the handle d ring on are blown out. Sloppy jaw, probably going to trash it soon and buy a nice new snapon.

Semi loose buffs and a good selection of compound. General buffing rules apply, watch edges and holes.

Cool! Thanks for all the info! I have to ge one of these deburring wheels and give it a try!

Honestly, I'm really bad at metal polishing. My polishing wheels and collection of compound was probably a waste of money. I don't even use it really. It's a skill I just don't possess.

And yeah, I know it wouldn't look good in the shop for very long. But I've got my shop vises for the grunt work. Old and more interesting tools, like this one, are more for displaying on the shelf. If I don't put some man stuff on the shelf here and there, then the wife's dolls and **** will swallow the whole house.

I looked on Google and what I see looks pretty much like any old aluminum oxide grinder wheels. No?

I have that vice, picked it up at a yard sale 20 years ago for $10. Best $10 I ever spent.

Steampunk?
All I'm seeing is a mirror shiny 70's Craftsman vise
Really old school Athols look kinda Steampunk. Some Parkers do too, but to me that vise would look better with an Evel Knievel paint job.

Click on the Columbian vise at the bottom of the page. Reading the description its been cleaned and buffed with several coats of clear paint and the anvil, handle and vise jaws are bare metal just waxed. Pretty nice.

You're just stating the obvious here. Everyone knows that EVERYTHING looks better with an Evel Knievel pain job. Cars, vises and all other tools, bikes, wives, pets, houses, EVERYTHING!

This reminds me. As a kid, I had a parachute with plastic character (worked a weight) that IIRC, had a blue starred stripes on white outfit guy with red helmet. And I haven't been able to find it on eBay in years. Maybe Buddy L. stuff.

That particular Chraftsman vise has made the rounds on Ebay at least twice that I know of. He is essentially charging $100+ for the polish job. I have three of the same model in like new condition sitting on a shelf waiting on my spray gun. I prefer paint to polish.
