The darn Liftmaster MyQ Warning Beep

So I have this Liftmaster 8500 with a MyQ 828LM Internet gateway, that can be controlled remotely over the Internet.
But the 888LM MyQ Control Panel makes a horrendous warning beep when you close the door via Internet app! (This doesn't happen with the regular remotes or wall button. I only get the warning beep when I close the door over the Internet with the app.)

To make a long story short, my solution was to to disassemble the control panel and disconnect the speaker.

Prying the speaker open:

This the delicate part. I used a small screwdriver to carefully lever the top off of the speaker housing. If you put the screwdriver too far under the housing you will damage the speaker's internal board; the screwdriver needs to just barely go under the edge.

The wires to snip:

Speaker removed:

And now there is no more annoying beep!

More details on my blog for those that want more explanation. (www.vintageveloce.com)

Nice little write up. Never really been an issue for me. If I'm closing or opening the door from outside I will usually have my music on and not notice the beep to a point it bothers me.

Guess it could be annoying for people inside the house.

It's a detached garage and I closes the door at night from the house and was shocked at how loud it was. I was afraid I woke all the neighbors as 2 other homes are as close to my garage as my house is. City life. It seems close to the volume of a fire alarm, just a bit quieter.

Yeah its loud for a reason, Liftmaster wants to make sure no one gets hurt (IE liability) when the door goes down, IMHO... You didn't forget we live is a sue happy country?

I have Liftmaster controls for my front gates. I like the three chirps it gives before closing via internet, but then again that's away from the house.

Someone will be stealing stuff from your garage and when you close the door on them they will sue you for removing that speaker. They didnt know you were trying to close the door. :wtf:

The photo eyes and the automatic reverse features are enough for the regular remote, and I'm ok with just those for the phone app too.

It's only there for safety. I goes off 6-8 seconds before the door moves to get the attention of anybody who might be near the door. Too bad you cut it out.

I hate the beeping noise as well. If it only chirped 3 times it would be fine but the beeping is loud AF and lasts a long time. I've been meaning to take on this task and your post has motivated me to get it done. Thanks !

YES! Thank you for this post. Man, I hate that beeping! I was so excited about being able to use my phone to open the door but never use that feature because that beeping is horrendously annoying. I can't believe how loud it is and how long it lasts. Others living on acreage might not have a problem with it by I live on a 5k sqft lot so in addition to it being annoying to me it's annoying to the 5 neighboring properties directly around my lot.

I've been wanting to tear into mine to see about how I could do this and now you've taken the guesswork out of it -thanks!

My regular opener had a feature were it beeped every time the beam between the sensors. This was with the garage door not moving. The beeper in the sensor (only in one of the two) was smaller and had exposed wires. Just a quick snip and no more annoying beep.

I was just hanging out in the garage with nothing to do and thought - hey, why not see about tackling this beeping. Took a whopping 10-15min to get this done and it works great!

One thing worth mentioning... in the tutorial on vintageveloce.com there's mention of prying up the speaker portion.I managed to get the screwdriver further underneath and pryed the whole thing up, breaking one of the solders in the process. I was then able to back up a little and get the cover off leaving the guts of the assembly still soldered to the board.

I'm not sure if you can remove the entire assembly (would require breaking or desoldering 2 pins) and get the same results or not but if you want to follow this tutorial, be careful, you only need to go under the assembly about 1-1.5mm to pry off just the plastic speaker cover and leave the rest of the assembly attached to the board.

Colin: Good comments. I added some verbiage about that to my original post.

I actually has three of these to do, so I got some practice. ;-) But you are correct, it is easy.

Just researching this as I just got my gateway up and lordy, that damned beep is intolerable. As an aside, on the liftmaster community board, it is suggested just to remove the disc from the piezo vs. cutting the entire unit out. Scroll down a ways and they have some photos. That way, you could always put the disc back in should you want to re-activate that horrible beeping...

Cheers.

That unit appears different from the one we have. But good addition to the thread for those with the other unit.

So the link provided in the thread is for an older model of the Garage door where the speaker module is housed in the control unit on the wall. I pulled my wall unit and the speaker wasn't there because I have a newer MyQ Garage door where the speaker is located in the ceiling unit.

I found this video that shows where the board is located once you remove the few screws to remove the shell (power screw driver is perfect for this). I no longer have that obnoxious beeping now when using my phone app to close the garage. My neighbors don't have to hear an announcement that I'm closing my garage.

Here is the video:

If we wrapped our kids, our wives, and all the neighbors in about 30 yards of bubble-wrap, they wouldn't be able to to get hurt by a closing garage door, and then we wouldn't need all those safety features.
