My favourite DeWalt is green, a '61 radial arm saw. The second favourite is 1/4 sheet orbital palm sander. They got the design when B&D bought a French company. I just keeps working.
I'm even more confused by how the new 20V Atomic tools coexist with the new 12V Xtreme tools (or vice versa).
Take the 1/4" impact drivers for example. Both brushless. The 20V is more powerful, and also an inch shorter and a hair lighter.
What is the draw of the 12V version then? To me the selling feature of going with less power is to get a smaller and lighter tool. If the 20V Atomic is lighter and smaller and more powerful that kind of kills the draw of the 12V version IMO.
/\ /\ /\ this is exactly how I ended up in M12 quicksand last week.
The week before, I grabbed a DW 20V Max, burshless drill and impact, separately, because it was a better deal than the combo extra battery and extra charger for $20, IIRCC. Then I bought other spare batteries, etc. Good to go right?
Wednesday, I'm at HD and there's an older customer and I swear I'm looking at myself in 10 years. He is, politely, adamant with the Ryobi/Milwaukee reps that they need to take an M12 1/4" brushless impact off the shelf and sell it to him, because there are none others to be found in the store AND it's listed for sale. The problem was, it wasn't for sale, individually. You had to buy the set, with the drill. He doesn't need the drill, or any M12 tool, because he has ALL of them. Pipe cutters, band saw, you name it he has it. Retired HVAC tech, who is still doing smaller jobs. I had to know what drove this guy to want that M12 impact so badly.
We chatted for quite a while, as the reps took the single tool off the shelf, and with no way to ring it out, they then had an HD department head "clearance" the item, so they could price it appropriately. The truth is, I wanted something a bit smaller than the DW 20, but do like the feel of those DWs. So, i figured I could buy the M12 combo and return it, if I didn't like it. Catch and release if you will. Of course, they were out of the combo as well. I burned rubber to the HD closer to me and I kid you not, there was a guy standing at the M12 display, fondling the 1/4" on display. I sensed another conversation, but before that would start, I intently focused on the bottom, mostly empty shelf, hoping to find one of 3 that store had left. They didn't have the, they had one and I grabbed it, then the customer there engaged me and I regurgitated what the HVAC had told me. We no sooner finish talking and a younger guy comes in, looking for what will be his fourth 1/4". He uses them all day long and the chucks keep breaking. not sure why he doesn't just have two, and ask Milwaukee to repair one, while keeping the other in rotation, but I had to get out of there.
I haven't handled the DW Atomic, but have gathered enough 20V batteries/chargers. I also now have the M12 drill and impact, with the hacksaw and ratchet on the way. I wanted to grab everything while it was on sale and when I get back from vacation, I'll sort through what I'm keeping and not.
The DW 12 might be interesting, but as stated by others, how long will it take to have a full product line. Some do like the grip of the DW better than the M12 and I won't lie that the DW is comfy. That said, have fairly larger hands and don't find the M12 awkward and, since the intent of the 12V is partly about tight spaces, it's nice to have the battery inside the handle, at times. I always seems to find myself wedged in places I don't belong, mostly due to time constraints on the spur of the moment projects that come up.

You shouldn't need a spare b/c the other is constantly breaking. This isn't cheap lawnmowers that we're talking about
Imo, 12v tools should have batteries that fit in, or are the shape of, the handle. 18v tools are light enough that i don't want another, slightly smaller tool in the same effective form factor.
I have a bunch of dewalt 20v and if i need something smaller, it will be M12 or bosch
Cant stand Milwaukee M12 hand held tools. The Bosch might be better but most of the new 12 volt tools from Hilti, Metabo and Makita all use the DeWalt type slide on batteries.
Have a Milwaukee Fuel screwdriver that hardly ever gets used. If I know that i am going to do lots of small work, I bring the DeWalt 12 volt tools from home.
Cant wait to see the new DeWalt 12V brushless. Probably will buy some to replace the Milwaukee M12 Fuel tools at work. The 4 smaller tools in the picture are 12 volt. The smaller size makes a difference when you are standing on a ladder, working overhead or doing hundreds of screws.
The Milwaukee M12 with large batteries is a poor substitute for the DeWalt atomic line. With the small batteries you have a un ergonomic, fairly large tool that wont stand upright. A Hilti or Dewalt 12 volt is a lot better choice for hours on end use.

IMO I feel Makita makes the best 12v Tools. They seem to have the bestf power to size ratio not to mention they offer 4.0 amp hour batteries for their 12v tools, along with 1.5, & 2.0amp hour.
I’ve recently been selling my Dewalt & making the jump to Makita, I also prefer how they do the 18v tools, use 2 batteries (36v) instead of a different battery platform (flexvolt).

My drawer at work. Theres a work light in another drawer somewhere. Really liking them. Thinking about swapping over to DeWalt at home and giving my Milwaukee stuff to my dad.
Edit: cant figure out how to psot pics on this website.

Walking through Home Depot in the front aisle I saw the dewalt fan packaged with battery and charger for $99. I have been waiting for the price to drop and this might help convince me. Battery is only 1.5ah though.
After working at Stanley for 3yrs my Dewalt collection is obscene thanks to their awesome discount LOL I have batteries and tools and lights all over our new house. Its miserable trying to find where i left each one when I need it LOL
Finally going to pick up my Dewalt rolling stool. I’ve never bought anything from Farm & Fleet before but they had it on sale. Their site wouldn’t accept my Canadian address as the billing address while my shipping address is in Michigan. I called and the ******* the phone says they won’t export to Canada so I asked how it’s different than me picking up in their store and bringing it home? No reason or much of a response from her and wouldn’t sell it to me so I had HD match the price.
Dont know why i bought all of it or why i took a pic. But it happened. Also this pic is over a year old. So theres more yellow and im in the M12 line also![]()
I'd probably use the MI address as billing too; I imagine there are some finer details in selling/exporting than we'd guess.
Is $99 good for the 1/4 20v brushless impact with battery, charger and case?

It's pretty standard. Batteries are the lowest capacity with no gauge. Will be fine for light use, but anything heavy, you'll end up wanting at least 2ah or 3ah.
If you need other tools, I would look for a bigger kit

For a couple bucks more, I'd buy the 3 speed variant DCF887B. Having multiple speeds comes in handy to avoid stripping out screw heads, where the single speed one has all the speed control in the trigger.
Don’t think you can do that: the billing address has to match the address on record with the cc company.
