Looks like a worm drive. They talk about bustin a nut and not your knuckles? What takes the reaction force? Mary Poppins or your hand getting smashed?

only weighs 3lbs... 10lbs after you add a 7lb impact. why not just buy a quality air ratchet? use the air ratchet like a manual ratchet to break loose the fastener then let the air motor do the rest of the work. okay, i can see if you're removing a nut on a 3 foot long piece of all thread it might be handy. because we all find ourselves in that situation so frequently...

Aluminum housing and bronze worm gears? Sounds pretty fragile!

Just get a proper torque multiplier. They're $1500 at the industrial store, or $15 new at the plumbing shop.

Are they a similar design (worm gear) or do they use planetary gears?

I've used a big 1" drive Snap-On torque multiplier (4x I think). Went up to 2500 lb-ft  Used it with a Snap-On 4ft long torque wrench that went to 600lb-ft.:drool: That is an expensive setup!

I've got a Lisle right angle impact, about $40, and I suspect a much more practical tool.

Rod goes in a air hammer and connects to end of the bar with a 1/2" drive.
