Fowl: I think we need some pics of your new table saw cart and it's been a while so a few pictures of the garage might be good for us (and you) to maybe give us an idea how you are doing or help you if you might need some.

I'm jealous of you especially this time of year living that close to the beach on the Oregon Coast. if you don't get a lot of stuff done in your garage that's ok cause raising kids and working and having a beach a mile or so away are very good excuses.

take care and hope you have a fun summer.

Thanks drives. Progress on the shop has been slow because of work, family (and the beach). Trying to get some other stuff done because my wife is having surgery this fall, and get my old international running right that I bought (it runs, but has a few issues)

I’ve been helping out the neighbor quite a bit as well as you may have noticed in the garage sale thread.

Fowl: sorry I missed all the garage sale posts of you maybe helping your neighbor, but you sure can post a few here on your thread if you have some to post and have time to.

also some of those cool Oregon Coast pictures and pics of those sand dunes that are even more amazing to me 50 years later. how far are you from Bandon?

also did your son get his football scholarship to a school he wanted or did he decide to do something else?

hope you enjoyed your weekend.

I’ll post up some pics later, I’m an hour north of Bandon.

As far as my son, he was taking a track scholarship at SWOCC, and just yesterday, he got a call from College if the Redwoods and they want him for football and track.

Now he has a decision to make.

Fowl: i've bought a battery for all my cars at Costco for the last 20 years and not sure if I got a good deal cause they only last about 5 years. that said I knew when my time was up to get a new one and it was trouble free for 5 good years.

have you used the Kreig set yet? I need to buy one and i think buying the one with all the extras is the way to go for quick cabinet and other woodworking projects.

I've got a friend that wants to take me to Bandon if I give him some golf lessons and i'd love to see those dunes and the waves and meet you too if you were around. maybe later this summer cause i'm not sure i'd like Bandon golf in the winter.

good to hear your son has some choices. maybe he'll ask Dad for a little advice besides a few sheckles?

thanks again for the ocean and dunes pics on the PNW thread. I could spend more than a few just watching the waves that is for certain.

Drives: that would be awesome for you to stop by. I hear Bandon Duned is a world class place to golf. I’m not a golfer, but I hear it is great. I’m in and out most of the summer, so let me know when that might happen.

I have not used that Kreg set, but I do have a separate pocket hole jig from them I have used in some projects and I’m a fan of their tools. They give the average diy’er the ability to take on projects they otherwise would not be able to (I built a table).

The battery is great so far. The higher cold cranking amps seems to be the key to turning over this old 392.

1/2 cup: Moose (mini-me) loves working in the shop. He has two tool boxes that he has claimed (a nice old sk box, and a blue one he wanted for Christmas. (Bought at Lowe’s).

My wife freaks out when she sees him using power tools, so we try to remember to close the door.

Fowl: great to see you are also GETTING ORGANIZED. also like that you are teaching your boys which end of a tool to use. funny about closing the door when you hand the boys power tools.

in case you might have forgot or want a few more SAFETY TIPS I started a SAFETY 101 thread you might read or definitely have your boys read cause i'm still learning some things the hard way. here's the link to the Safety 101 thread.

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=338827&highlight=safety+101

maybe our paths will cross this summer of for sure next summer.

keep up the great progress!!

Fowl: how about a couple shelves for supplies and use the stand for your drill press or stack a few more cabinets on top of it?

or put a couple grinders and a buffer on it and put 4 casters under it and have a mobile grinding/buffer station with supplies inside?

I also got a recess cut out for my miter saw station. Hope to get it framed out tomorrow or this weekend.

Figured I would drop it down level with the bench top and put it at a more comfortable work height for me.

Drives: it will almost certainly get wheels. I’m putting as much as I can on wheels. Even with wheels it’s a little low for a grinder station, but maybe my bandsaw....

And definitely a shelf, maybe a door.

Fowl: just curious if the RAS stand might fit in the slot you just made for your miter saw so you could have a bench miter station that is also mobile?

Fowl: yep I couldn't tell if you had any bench structure in the way below, but he width looks dang close or maybe it could be cut again to make it work if the lower part will allow a stand to move in and out.

cheers

Credit for the idea goes to Drives, but it came up a little ‘short’ (pun intended). Some 4” casters and it will be perfect though. Thanks for the idea!

I ordered the casters last night on Amazon (late night Amazon shopping spree) I got four lockable swivel casters for around $25, significantly cheaper than the local ACE hardware (by about $20).

Fowl: great to see the miter saw sitting on your free RAS stand. if the height of the casters doesn't get the saw to the exact height maybe some plywood or metal shims might be enough to get it perfect.

I love it when an idea of mine works for one of the members and hope the new saw station really helps your shop. also since i've almost chopped my arm off many times cause I pin the guard up on my makita miter saw make sure your boys know this can be a very dangerous tool. STAY SAFE!!

keep up the great work in your shop and sounds like your day job is preventing you from having much fun there or on the beach and with 4 kids i know you are a busy guy so enjoy the ride cause it's going to get easier some day in your future.

cheers

Thanks Drives. If my measurements are correct, I should be right on, If not, I'm thinking I should be able to level it using some rubber washers as spacers between the saw and the cabinet, with the added benefit of reducing vibration. I know that I will not be too tall, and maybe a washer width short, Doesn't get closer to perfect than that.

Alright, questions for everybody, The top of my bench is made out of 2x material. It is very stout. However, it has the rounded edges consistent with most lumber, and it is all nailed in place with lot of big nails that make it not worth removing. You can see in the picture above of my miter station what I'm referring to.

So, is there a good way to get a nice, flat, consistent surface?

I don't want anything that adds height to the bench, since it is at the maximum comfortable working height for me (hence the reason the saw got recessed).

Fowl: I’m not sure if they call it hard board or melanite I think that is 1/4 inch thick that should work. Or 1/4 inch plywood. Or you could sand and then fill gaps with some type of epoxy and then poly finish might make it really shine. There is a thread in general garage called show your workbench that a lot of members see if you want to post a few pics and your question for maybe more answers if you have time to post there.

Well, the casters I ordered ended up being too tall, so my grandma’s old tool box will get its first ever set of wheels. 4ec38f83eeb169d11d7ccccba9bfb52e.jpg

They are not bolted on yet (can’t find the nuts and bolts I had set aside for them), I guess I’ll do that tomorrow when I get back from fishing.

I too have that problem, 2x top that has warped over the years. Though, mine is attached with bolts so i could remove the planks and redimension them, but if you come up with some way that's less work id be interested.

Fowl: sorry to hear some how your measurements were off. how far off? would maybe a nice piece of 3/4 or 1.125 inch plywood top on your 2 by bench maybe solve the height and smoothness issue?

good luck and ask for help if you might need some. or having those casters on your old tool box isn't a bad idea either.

have fun fishing and what are you trying to catch? in the ocean or at a nearby lake or river?

Thanks. The casters were just taller than advertised, no big deal.

As far as the fishing goes, we went for small mouth base on the Umpqua. We caught one or two.

Some more fishing pictures since I’m not in the shop today. My five year old took an unplanned swim.

Picked up some shelves for the garage, I was looking for and/or contemplating building some shelves to occupy some space at the back of the bench, these showed up on letgo for a price that made too much sense to pass on.

Well, I was looking at the shelves I bought, two different colors which you wouldn’t think would bug me given the eclectic mix of stuff in my shop. But it did. So, they got cleaned and painted what I’m calling ‘Dr. Who blue’
