Fowl: speaking of bringing in the IN-LAWS don't they live in Idaho? did you go pick them up or are they able to make the drive by themselves?

great work on the little projects and nice to see you are getting things done in your shop.

I hope your bride is feeling better. has your son made a full recovery from his football injury?

Drives: My in-laws are in great health and make the drive on their own (about 12 hours)

My son is released by his physician and was able to play a little in last Friday’s game and will return to full play this week. We are keeping a close eye on him and doing what we can to keep him safe.

The tape from the game he got hurt in is under official review by OSAA and could result in penalties for the other team and the officials. We are waiting to see what they do, although I doubt much of anything will happen.

It’s a dangerous sport, but those rules are in place to keep our kids safe. They should be followed and enforced.

Alright, Halloween is coming, so my shop has turned into a little shop of horrors.

Here is the current project:
(Walmart skeleton, plastic drop cloth, heat gun, red mahogany stain)

Fowl: so are you only on the DARK SIDE for Halloween or all year long and it just comes out at this time of year?

looks like you've got a huge collection of old skulls?

Karen seems like a very nice lady. I’m jealous of all the Halloween fun. We live about 5 miles out and have never gotten a trick-or-treater. I used to put up a ton of fun stuff (not on your level) and never have had any come. It’s more fun when the kids come around.

Hey drives, sorry I have been absent. It’s audit season at work. We currently have 4 different audits going on, so lots of long hours.

The shop is a wreck since I was building Halloween decorations and I haven’t had time to really clean it up.

And now I’m on to Christmas decorations.

I did spend a week in Idaho helping the in-laws paint their kitchen. Which involved extensive wallpaper removal, prime, paint, new trim. I think my wife has some before and after pictures.

The kids did help when appropriate, but the only lesson he learned was to not use a step stool right next to the stairs, and he ended up taking a header down the stairs. The only thing hurt was his pride (oh, to be young!)

That trip was when I purchased the Jeep.

And here are some of the developing Christmas decorations:

Fowl: I heard some talk all the way up here in SEATTLE that there is a light show going on down on the OREGON COAST. seems that two guys have bought up all the lights in all the stores from miles around and have tapped into the power grid to power them up. :lol_hitti

got any pics of the CHRISTMAS LIGHTS and stuff you've been spending your spare time on?

cheers

Bd: the TJ is a manual

Drives: I’ll try to get some pictures tonight.

Also getting ready to start building a faux beam style mantel for our front room, so I’ll have some garage worthy stuff to post soon (I hope). We have to hang the stockings somewhere!

Fowl: any pics of the lights and/or decorations you want to share? how about 4 nails this year until you make the mantle so the kid's sockings will hang until Santa fills them up. somehow our kid's sockings would still come off our mantle Christmas eve and be full of stuff under the tree Christmas morning. my bride usually waited up all night to see Santa and as far as I know she always missed him, but he never failed to deliver.

best of luck with that mantle project and make sure you post up a few before and after pics of the piece of wood you are going to use. REDWOOD, CEDAR, PINE, FIR or do tell and what size?

hope all is well down in Paradise

I'll post up some pics of the lights tonight. I need to remember to take some.

As far as the mantel goes, the first attempt is going to be a simple pine faux beam. Mainly because I'm not quite sure how I'm going to build it and don't want to use expensive wood while I figure it out. Pine has the added benefit of being light. The fireplace has a rock fascia, but I have no idea what is behind it, otherwise I would install anchors and hang a real beam. I should actually get started on it tonight, and I'll try to grab some pictures as I go. SWMBO wants it done in time for Christmas which is 11 days away....!!!!!!

I did have a few pictures of the lights on my phone. There are more now. So I’ll take some more pictures.

I do have a funny story though. I’ll have to tell it when I get some time to type (not on my phone)

Sorry, first time I've had a chance to sit down on the computer.

So, it was a Thursday night, we took our youngest to see Santa, who was making an appearance at the local pool (small towns have limited spaces to host events). All that went well.

It was an overcast night, and very dark in our neighborhood, and as we pulled up to our driveway our lights were a sight to behold. They twinkled and dance in the darkness, hopefully fulfilling their intent of spreading a little bit of Christmas cheer.

But, there was one problem, the large inflatable snowglobe igloo carousel that was given to us by a neighbor was not inflated (it had been located in front of the doghouse). I send my 16 year old over to investigate (probably just came unplugged), and he yells from where it should have been, "Where is it?"

"What do you mean where is it?, you should be standing on it." I replied.

"Well it's not here." He replied with all the snotty attitude that you would expect from a male of the teenage persuasion that had just returned from a forced visit to Santa (instead of movies with his girlfriend).

I walk over, not believing him, and behold with my own eyes a patch of empty grass. I look for and quickly locate the cord that appears to have been tossed back over by the shop. We do a quick look around the yard and confirm that it is missing.

Not knowing what else to do, we call the local law enforcement (an advantage of small towns is that they will actually look into such a thing). The dispatcher, Carol, greeted me, asked how my wife and kids were doing, and then told me that I was not the first to lose decorations this season, and dispatched an officer to my house. The game was afoot.

Officer Gardiner (who is one of the assistant football coaches) and Officer Smart (the track coach) show up to investigate. We spend the first few minutes catching up, they ask how my boy is doing in Idaho, chide the 16 year old about his grades, and then I explain the situation. They reinforce what the dispatcher had already told me, and we all share our surprise that somebody stole the biggest item in the yard, but left the $150 in laser light decorations I have around the property. We opined at length what kind of person would steal decorations, and I shared photos of the decoration with the officers.

As we are having this discussion, sitting in my front room, drinking hot apple cider (have to make them feel at home), my six year old keeps interrupting. I keep shushing him (the adults are talking). Then he boldly steps into the middle of the room and exclaims, "LISTEN DAD, LISTEN. IT"S IN THE BLACKBERRIES!"

All the adults, stop.

"What? Where?" I ask, the embarrassment starting to creep across my face.

"It's in the blackberries."

Now, just so you know, we have roughly .75 acres, and the blackberries are at the back of the property. With three pine trees between where the inflatable was located.

I exchange glances with the officers, and we all busted up laughing. We went out to the blackberries and sure enough found the inflatable there. Best guess, the windstorm the night before had caught it and threw it about 150 yards, over two fences and past three trees.

Fowl: great story and love the sound of a small town friendly living situation. so were you able to retrieve the Snowman AND was he working like he was a few days ago or did you need to give it the RED GREEN treatment with the magic DUCT TAPE?

Merry Christmas (yep your story made me smile) and here's to a great 2019.

cheers

Just finishing up some odds and ends.

Coolest thing I’m working on is getting a tour of a 125 year old iron works shop that is still in operation with a lot of the original belt driven equipment that is run off of a steam engine.

The whole operation is for sale if anyone is interested.

Seems like I’m always picking up a new hobby, so I got a good deal on some parts and assembled an AR-15 (M4).

Fowl: maybe one of your boys or your bride (or you) has some painting talent and can paint up one of these 3D pictures on your garage? I couldn't find the ones for garage doors so had these handy and you'll have to GOOGLE the garage door 3D paintings that are pretty cool.

I saw a few of these at the big HOME SHOW in Seattle a year or maybe 2 years ago and kinda liked them.

enjoy your day.

Those are awesome Drives, and thanks Jyzze.

If I was going to be honest, I’ve never really had much of a desire to own an AR, but the idea of building one was interesting.

I even machined the lower myself from an 80%. Then assembled the whole thing, and when I was all done it worked. So that was satisfying.
