It doesn't seem too bad if he needs the cash,as a gift card won't put gas in the car.
If you're spending $100 anyway..... But i'm not sure how you can determine the balance of the card, other than him being at the store,using the card first then giving him the money.

Why go thru the trouble. If I was going to the store to spend $100, I wouldnt call him first. I would just go to the store.

Alot of people steal and activate gift cards, according to a friend of mine, that works at home depot. he may be activating stolen cards, and trying to wash them for cash.

I have heard the same thing about most of the gift cards on CL being of a somewhat "shady" origin.
