The Faces of Vogel

One day I got to thinking how there are several variations of Vogel stamped ratchets out there, so I decided to do a little study to see how many variations I could find.

For those who are wondering what in the world I'm talking about, I'm referring to these ratchets with a drive stud on both sides, made by Proto. Most have 1/2"' and 3/8" but I understand from another thread there is a shorter 3/8" by 3/8" model only stamped Proto as well.

I discovered there are at least 5 different face plates. These five pictures were borrowed from the web and do not belong to me. I'm not sure of the chronological order.

I have one of those. They are pretty cool. The size is just right - in between the 3/8 and 1/2 ratchets.

I once went to Vogel's tool shop and found all kinds of good tools, and I met Irwin Vogel's son. Somewhere I have a receipt from my purchase. Tried to find them a few years ago, but they were gone. All of the great tool shops disappeared around the turn of the century.

3bay, I too have a fascination with these Vogels. I have been able to find 4 of the 5 plates you've identified as well what would be a 6th. I know, I know, worthless without pictures, but I'm posting this on an original IPad and I'm not too tech savy... I call it the No-No. It's essentially the same as your picture 4, but 5 stamped lines as follows: 1) MFD. U.S.A. 2) VOGEL TOOL CO. 3) DOUBLE DUTY 4) PAT NO 5) NO 2803980
I have never seen, outside your post here, one with the plate in your 3rd picture. Would be fascinated to know if anyone has one!

My best guess at chronological order is that that one may be the first made. Pat pend coming second, with pat # third, the No-No fourth, your 4th pictured coming next, with the Neff last. Purely a guess...

What I've really been trying to dig into on these lately is the alignment of the retention balls on the drive studs. Most are aligned, but I've found a few examples aligned 90 degrees or 180 degrees apart. And just one, similar to your example, that the drive studs are 45 degrees apart. I'm not sure if there's a correlation between the different drive studs and different plates... I've wondered if some of the differences were from repair kits?

It would be interesting if others on here would share what plates and drive stud retention ball alignments they have in their possession. And I would really like to see a repair kit for one of these Vogels, if they truly exist!

Mine has a slight variation. The actual patent number is below the "Pat No.". I picked this up buying a tool box full of tools. Unfortunately, it's missing the selector switch. Also, mine has a gun metal gray finish. 1/2" drive / 3/8" drive

Sorry I’m late to the party but I got excited when I was looking up this double duty that was given to me by my buddy because it was “broken”. It was missing an internal spring easy fix but very odd ratchet to say the least lol. Anyways I figured what better way to show my small collection of mostly plomb and a few Proto’s outside of my bigger proto collection. Looks like I gotta break out the wire wheels and buffing pads and get that Vogel shined up.
