Incase this post inspires people to check out Fein grinders. Beware the new entry price WSG 7-115. It is not made in Germany, it is made in China.

Most of Fein's things are made in Germany, but theres a few that are not.

I know the Fein is 3 times the price of an equivalent spec Makita in my local tool shop. I would like one as it looks and feels quality, but we get about 10 years out of the Makitas with a brush change or two.

We have a couple fein WSG20-180 grinders, we get a solid couple years out of them. The trigger takes some getting used to.

I've had great luck with Makita grinders. I bought one just for fiberglass work 10 years ago and even with all the dust never a problem. I had several cheap ones I used for metal (harbor freight) that all failed. My father then gave me his 1988 vintage Makita when he got a new one. Still works great.

I know a lot of people with Makita grinders who have been very happy with them. I don't see how the Fein could possibly be 3x the grinder.

I really like my Black and Decker 13 amp 7-9" grinder, but B&D probably hasn't made a grinder like this in 30 over years.

Thank for the heads up.

A new small Bosch my dad bought is also from China.

My next one would be either Metabo or Flex with variable speed.

What do you guys think between these two?

Corded tools: WSG 7-115 angle grinder (China ? S.Korea ?)/vacuums (Romania)/JHM core drills (USA)/belt grinders (Denmark)

My next one would be either Metabo or Flex with variable speed.
What do you guys think between these two?

Have a hunt around for a deal Dutch! I have a few Fein tools now and I have never paid anything like that!

Think my Fein 115mm grinders was a little more expensive than Makita, but nothing like x3!

I hate grinders though, so if I have to use one I don't like the added hassle of a cheap one!

I once bought an Einhell, just for one job away from home! It was without doubt the shittiest and most dangerous power tool I have ever owned! It remains hung above my bench as a warning against false economies!

Makita? HA! What a joke
I have killed makitas with no problem
The longest lived grinders I have had in my shop are the black&decker industrial-dewalt grinders. I though you could never beat them.
Then because of some deal thread here I tried the FEIN grinders and they are not my favorite. Love them, have 4 of them

Love watching Ave - even when he's wrong he's entertaining

I don't have a Fein grinder, but I do have grinders from Dewault, Makita, Milwaukee, Hitachi, Bosch, Porter Cable, Harbour Freight, and Metabo. All of them are pretty good. I use all sizes, 4 1/2, 6, 7 and 9 inch.

I'd say I value smooth running and plenty of power over anything else.

I'd put the Metabo and the Makitas at the top.
r
The Metabo with the quick nut is awesome and seems to have a powerful, smooth motor.

The Makita 6 inch 11 amp SJS with soft start and variable speed is probably the best combination of power and easy to use. I could use Makitas all day with their butter smooth motors.

The 7-9 inch ones are just too big and heavy for me to use much. I've got a 9 inch Dewault that is a monster, but I can only use it a few minutes at a time.

Bosch is probably my least favorite of the name brands - very rough running.

Porter Cable is the sleeper among them. About the cheapest and very durable.

Harbour Frieght grinders are OK for occasional light duty use - If used hard, either their switches or the brush holders will give out.

Do you mean that you like the Fein over the B&D? Have you tried the Metabo?

I thought I had decided until your post:eyecrazy:

is rat tail useful?
Price not a problem.
Speed- not sure what I need. I mostly use it for cutting a few things, but mostly for grinding steel as well as rough sanding with proper attachment. If i get the variable one I may use it for polishing the car?

Will go back to the drawing board again:)

My old Fein Rotary, which I don't have in my possesion, I could have sworn it was German made.

I wouldn't use it to polish a car. Get a random orbital for that.

Thanks Pureleaf
Now that I re-read my post I have realised it.

We use hand grinders extensively. Few things I have noticed when using (not Fein) grinders.
-hands should not come near the motor as motors get hot and burn hands
-no slide lock switches, get jammed with dust, only use a trigger style switch

Our favorite brand is Dewalt.

I didn't know about AvE since this post and since the discovery, I've watched an OBSCENE amount of his videos.

His knowledge of everything seems almost fictional. I know it's not, but, I just heard his wax poetic about the finer points of unemployment in a small town in Germany.

The compact WSG8-115 (successor to WSG7) is made in Germany. And the quality is clearly there. :) A smooth operation compared to the Porter Cable brand. Although I must say, the Porter Cable branded Angle Grinders are the best in its class in terms of cost.
