Given our latest redesign, we thought it would be highly appropriate to feature something one of our users (and sponsors) is highly passionate about - vintage service station signs. Steve Johns...

I think that vintage service stations are very on-topic and appropriate here on the Garage Journal. When I was young every service station had a "Garage" attached. Now we don't even have "service stations" anymore, just convenience stores with gas pumps.

Sodas, coffee and twinkies are more profitable than running a service dept.

I'm always driving through small towns that have an old service station on the corner and think it'd be sweet to buy one and fix up. Someday!

History is way cool and I enjoying reading about it, especially here or on the HAMB. Thanks for the writeup.

I too like the Flying A signage and although I have several different old gas signs, I try to collect Flying A when ever I can afford it. Here's a few of mine.

Also more profitable than selling gas.

I don't have any Flying A signs, but when I was tearing out the dash of a car I was restoring, I managed to find a "Tidewater Oil Company" credit card from the community that used to own my car. The card expired in '63 and the car is a '60, which seems to indicate where the car was first in service. The card itself is in pretty decent shape for its age, and shows all of the associated companies where the card is good on the back side. If anyone is interested in seeing it, I can scan it and post photos.

ol55, I like your shop. Seeing the big Flying A sign reminds me years ago when I used to target shoot at an old one like it...If I only knew then what I know now.

I love the look, too.
Can't deal in the real stuff market tho, it is a bit rich for me when I have other habits to feed. I am going to restore the visible pump and the lubster to Texaco colors next spring, I hope.

The Jeg's Banner is down, it was a gft from someone who needed to see it hanging, but didin't "Get It" when it comes to the theme. That area is where the welder, plasma, mini-mill and other goodies are going.
