Well...
If I wanted a forum to run a particular way, I would build one and invest the time and money to run it and only allow people I liked to post there...... but.... I don't.
Therefore....I read what I want, respond to what I want.. ignore the rest..
It is the internet.. and Ryan, in my opinion, does a great job.

I think the OP just wants pinterest. A forum is a social thing, about as social as you get these days. Maybe some of you are antisocial? Some of the best threads have morphed over years and input from the forum usually helps. For all you guys that only post when it is really important, try posting a few simple words of encouragement, otherwise the threads die or the poster gets annoyed feeling like they are talking to themselves. I just don't understand it. :headscrat

Good, good job.

I agree! An actual gallery that you can scroll through members pictures based on the user and type of project like they have on some woodworking sites would be ideal. Users could comment below and discuss how awesome the garage or project is! :D

I would like to see an indicator under the members name that they are the OP, I can't remember now which one, but one forum I have been on has a little red dot or something like it close to the members name and when you are scrolling through a kajillion pages it pops up noticeably and you know quickly that is the OP. No idea if that is an easy thing to do here or not. I think I have only seen it on one forum so far, so maybe it is hard or not thought of....

I don't imagine it would take much effort adding a couple of options to the top of each new thread allowing one to suppress all but posts from the OP, those posts w/ pictures (not quoted pics), or both.

On threads that have a problem the OP is requesting help with, I'd personally like to suppress all the other posts initially to get all the add'l info. added as well as the solution if the OP was so kind as to furnish it.

I agree.
The main reason I post on GJ is the fact that there are a lot of nice people that give you their feedback.
And I like to show my appreciation by posting a thumbs up or congrats on somebody's thread.
This is what a community means.

Validation is very important even if most don't want to recognize it.

Of all the sections, l visit the Garage Gallery the least. It takes, as said, an hour per build and 672 pages of non related stuff. I visit here often, but don't have that much time. I'm with the OP.

Not to be confrentational but I believe you are very wrong on this. This thread is already proving that there is an interest in what I am thinking. Just because it isnt done does not mean there is room for improvement. I am trying to help this community and this forum into another level.

I totally agree that there needs to be discussion, I would be more upset if that part was lost. I am trying to figure out a good way to make the meat and bones part easier to access.

I have looked at threads that are over 100 pages long that are now just projects that the OP is working on. That to me belongs in another forum and turns me off to looking into the design and ideas they used.

Bottom line we can come up with a better way if we apply ourselves for the betterment of the forum

Hopefully it isn't taboo to link another forum but this might be what you are longing for. On the Maverick forums they have a technical section where you have the resource and then a tab for discussion.

I know what you're saying, but as for me, I've always tried to consider myself a guest on GJ. It's not my place, so I don't tell the owner how to run his shop. I don't mind change with some things, but I like getting on here, relaxing, and finding everything's still the same.

Not sure if it’s done on website but if using Tapatalk it does put a “OP” next to the members name of the thread in which your on.

This is truly the only way everybody would be happy with how the forum is run. If you had your own site, you can make it exactly how you want, delete and edit at will.

It's always going to be a typical 6 of one and a half dozen of the other argument.

The only thing that drives me batty is when the OP puts up 8 progress pics, which prompty gets quoted by 5 people saying "nice" or "good job!". Results in three pages of the same pictures.

This is why I try to limit my pics to two per post. If somebody does quote me, we are only going to see those two pics, not a landslide of pics. it's nothing more than trying to reduce the multiple picture factor by nipping it in the bud before it grows by quotes.

I guess I will ask the mods to move my thread to a dark corner of GJ so I don’t interfere with the OP’s vision of how things should be.

Not a chance in Hell, don't even bother asking me. :drink:

It's easier to keep track of the OP's post if they have an avatar that is one off, not something redundant or used by others. It also helps if a member doesn't play musical avatars and constantly changing them. As you scroll down through a thread, it's easy to pick out who the OP is.

For me, most of the time I enjoy reading my fellow members comments as they ask relevant questions, give feedback and come with ideas I may have not thought about. If I see what appears to be a bunch of fluff, I scroll through the posts and get back to the OP's.
If I never got any feedback of any type, whether it be questions, comments or somebody pointing out a mistake I made, I wouldn't have stayed motivated to keep the documentation going, nor would I have taken the amount of pictures that I did for my Garage Refurb thread.

They had a similar challenge over on iboats. The solution there was to compress the thread after the boat/project was finished and add it to the "Finished Projects" section. There was nothing wrong with compliments, questions and support during the build as that's what that forum was for but once it was over it was deemed more helpful to future visitors to condense the thread and only show progress shots, useful tips, supplies and techniques. Mostly from the OP but any helpful info from others was sometimes left in too. I'm not sure who edited the threads though? The OP or a mod?

I'm thinking the OP of the thread is wishing for more of a reddit style picture thread where the OP posts/pictures would be the main thread and any replies would be replied to those post would be under a collapsable subpost. This would make it very easy to see the complete project in just a few pages without having to scroll through hundreds of comments/quotes/questions/subbed unless you wanted to.

I don't think it's been mentioned but IF

IF, the poster uses the forums built in picture attachment system, and not a third party like flikr or photobucket, you can easily click an icon in the thread list to see all attachments in 1 spot.

From thread list/form click here

step1.jpg

these are all attachments in the thread

You are going about this the wrong way. Since most people use a browser these days that have plugins or extensions, why not build a tool that adds on to your browser and presents the forum in the way you want. You would be able to turn it on and off at will, kind of like ad block, only you have it programmed to hide text, duplicate pictures, etc.

That works - but in my case I never use it because I host my own web space and want to use/link those pictures elsewhere.

A "finished project" thread would work, if the OPs would take the time to sort it all out and build the new finished thread, and it could be owned specifically by the poster and not updated by others.

That stated, the interaction during the build can be quite helpful, especially when you get to one of the "how am I gonna do this" and people chime in with ideas. Stripping that out would lose some of the detail generated during the whole process.

A "pintrest" link is also a way to do it, but everyone viewing would need a Pintrest account to get the full feature of it. Don't need Yet Another Account on Yet Another Social Site - but guys could find Interest in Pinterest if you search on the right things ;)

I don't mind all the comments (except the excessive quoting of pictures) because a lot of the times more ideas spawn from them.

I cant stand that people use thumbnails to post their pictures. I wont even waste my time in a thread that I have to click on a pic or stare at a 1x1. its annoying and its 2017 post a pic that is normal size.

Well, I haven't found a site that has a better 'garage gallery' type of section, so I can't ***** about the one we have here.

I have only seen one forum that addresses to op in the middle of the thread: The OP is listed as the thread starter on every post he makes, that way you can make comments to his situation. And not to someone else's. All forums are different and I wind up comparing all to GJ, and we win.

This thread has inspired me to create a thread index, and remove all of the duplicate photos and atta-boys that do not contain information that could help another builder once I read them and respond. I will put a disclaimer in the front of the thread thanking people for their responses and that I appreciate all input and will quarterly clean up the thread to keep it current, relevant and inspiring. Just another maintenance task for my build since GJ members had a lot of influence on my build in the first place... hopefully I have the control to do it!

Edit... well, that didn't work! I cant remove peoples comments so no way to clean up the thread other than a thread index on the first page. That is what I shall do!

The problem that has recently surfaced in a huge way if picture hosting. Since PB decided to change their terms of use and literally break the internet, some members have decided that one of the safest ways to make their pics don't disappear is to attach them directly to the forum in their post.

Until I decide what photo-hosting site to use or what to see what the future brings us with PhotoBucket, I still have pictures there and they are still showing (atleast for me) even though my Pro-account subscription just ended. I went through many pages and attached all my pictures.. . . all 1200 plus pictures. I will not be uploading them to another site and if a member chooses not to view my thread because my pictures are attachments, I'm fine with that.

Like I said above, 6 of one and a half dozen of another. Not everybody is going to be happy with the forum, how it's set up or how it's ran.

You mean like that little pic in your signature that I can't even make bigger? Actually, I commend you for the small sig pic....What bugs me is that some people insist on a huge pic and great big long signature that we have to see every time they post.

As for thumbnails, I use them now since the Photobucket fiasco.....

You can create a photo album in your profile ... With detailed descriptions attached to each photo... Then connect to said album in a thread... Even tease full sized photos in the thread... To satisfy the lazy who don't want to click.

That way you can tell a whole story in the album and refer to it in a thread... You can have multiple albums too...

Easy to see the whole story in images without the peanut gallery comments.

I am glad to see this conversation. Nothing is wrong here but maybe we could add some things to make it better.

I am one of the 50 page build thread guys. It took me almost 3 years to finish the build. Probably 20% of the posts are mine. The only way I stayed motivated throughout was all the "attaboys" from other members. It made me start to consider taking better pictures and videos of process. It even encouraged me to start a youtube page. All the advice and ideas made my garage better. I try to review everyone's thread who commented in mine. I would severely miss this aspect of GJ if it was gone.

With that being said, my plan is to create a new thread called "My garage in pictures” that shows it all, start to finish without all the rambling and tangents. Then guys don’t need to wade through three years of me humming and hawing about flooring colours.

The idea of making a “finished garage" section is a great idea. This would encourage guys to keep it brief.

I'd also like the idea of a different section to host what you are doing in the garage. This way I can follow guys like Bob Heine or Denwood outside of their garage builds. I hope to create my own thread like that too. If guys liked my build they may also like my home made surf boards.

Lastly it would be nice to be able to link to more than one thread in your signature line. That way you could direct to any of your key threads. (Although I agree about keeping the signature line small in pixels)

I understand what you mean. Once these threads get to 5000 posts and 7 years old, and a lot of them are, then they do ramble. The initial build photos in many cases may have been killed by photobucket. I think it's just the nature of the beast.

some forums have a real gallery (just pictures, no comments) but that is not ideal either. I guess I should look at how the album works.

I see some of what the original complaints are about in the longer established topics.
I posted one there a while back and it gets next to no reaction...very few views or comments...maybe this newb doesn't fit into the buys club...:dunno:
I actually haven't found a reason to keep it updated and just let it drop off...
