i currently have 2 transmissions laying in the garage floor. one that has been removed from the "toy", and the other that is being cleaned and partially rebuilt before being installed into the "toy".

my wife has a green thumb bug and we have several potted plants lining the front walk, back bedroom window, front window and porch. storage for fertilizer and potting soil has been a small corner of the garage, in large rubber maid tubs with lids.

thanks to mother nature, the planting of a few have been next to the new transmission. you can guess how that goes...

anyhow, i have designed something that will keep us both happy! AND gets the push mower, weed eater and other yard tools out of the garage!
green house / shed

sneaks under the limits for the city's codes, so i'm in the clear to start building after mother nature says i can! I can still modify the layout, but need to keep the size to 8'x12'

please give your best suggestions! currently i'm thinking lexan sheets for the south facing roof line. "clear" roof portion will be 8'x8'

anyone else built anything like to to reclaim their garage as a garage?

Not sure if you would need Lexan as regular plexi should hold up fine, I figure if people are using vapour barrier for a roof, plexi should hold up fine.

Other then that looks like a great idea.

Oh and you may consider roof vents instead of the doors. Rain/snow/stuff would quickly make a home in your nice warm shed!

They have translucent roof panels for pole barns. These aren't perfectly clear, but should hide your yard tools, while allowing plants to get light.

However reading about plants in a garage, made me think pot farm.:lol_hitti

looking at that photo, i realize people are thrown for a loop.

the building will be wood. only translucent portion will be the south facing roof. *attached a better shot of the project*

I think that panels for greenhouses are different materials so that the 'Good Rays" from the sun can get through. I would check on the passivity of materials and choose the correct one if you want to grow in there. You also want to make sure that you choose materials correctly from the treated lumber aspect. Some PT chemicals will kill plants. Also fertilizer will promote rust. Storage of fert. will require sealed containers. I would suggest that you get a couple of large garbage cans to store fert outside the building, and make sure the wife does not let it get dropped in the building where it will get to the tools and mower. Dad one time put an open coffee can of fert, under the workbench in the garage and it rusted a jack and chainsaw to ruin. I've always remembered that and been paranoid of where fert. is stored.
