I guess I get the Rat Rod thing, looking back at the roots of Hot Rodding, and I completely support anyone's ingenuity and creativity in building them; they are fun to look at. It's what [you] like that is important.

Agreed...it really should be called the Hokey Ass Menstrual Board. Way Too much flamin', posing and flat-out unfriendly types to suit me. After reading 1 too many rants, I chose to never join. Some guys just like that kind of thing....I'm not one of them. I've met several of their ilk at various car shows in the area...they aren't much better in person either.

Drop by for a cold drink, some rock-n-roll from the jukebox, a game or two of pinball and let's talk hotrods for awhile!

99.9% of the people on the HAMB are the salt of the earth. The charitable things those guys accomplish amaze me every day. Just a single example:

We had a young guy that had been on the forum since he was 8 years old or so. He developed a rare form of cancer. The forum raised enough money to send him to California from Canada for a procedure that extended his life. On top of that, a bunch of fellas from the HAMB got together and built him a car. Even though he was only 15, the Canadian authorities let him drive it.

When he died, the entire forum felt it... And that's because that forum is full of people that don't judge folks on a whim. Good people.

The H.A.M.B. is more than a forum. It's a very special place full of a lot of great people.

Certainly there are instances in our hobby that bring out the best in people, as you would expect from car folks. Thanks for sharing his story.

I had NO idea! That's extremely cool!

If it wasn't for GJ, I doubt Mjozefow and I would have met, something we discussed just last night.

Yeah, it's pretty incredible... And these aren't isolated incidences. Here are a few more examples from just the past 6 months:

1. Raised over $10k for Joplin, MO tornado relief fund in less than a week. I have no idea what the total raised is at this point, but it's considerable... And we had a ton of folks that drove thousands of miles to be on site to help with the relief.

2. Raised over $20k for one of our members that lost everything due to a fire that wasn't covered under insurance. A number of fellas also got together to help him rebuild.

3. Raised thousands for a member that lost his house in the missouri floods. Fundraising is still going on as I type...

4. The H.A.M.B. as an institution has donated over $10k to Dell Children's Hospital since January 1.

5. One of our long time members recently passed tragically... I'm not sure of the total raised to cover funeral, etc... but it is considerable at this point.

And the folks on the forum do a ton of little things every day. Just as an example, we had a member that was driving his hot rod from the west coast to the midwest not long ago. He had a tire issue. Coker Tire flew a tire to the nearest airport and then one of our members picked it up from there and drove over 400 miles to get it to our stranded man.

I don't point all of this out to blow my own horn. In fact, other than some donations here and there, I have very little to do with this stuff... The people on the HAMB did it all. There is no finer group of people on this earth.

I don't need to defend the HAMB, Ryan was much more diplomatic. I will say I have met lifelong friends on that board in the last 10 years. Folks that will drop everything to help another as Ryan pointed out. I'll drink to that

Ryan, You just made my eyes 'smile' from the HAMB Andy post & all the other stuff that you posted about the HAMB.......Your should change your name to "Elmer"......your the glue that brings all of us 'Yahoos' together via this computer thing.....Heck, I have met a gentleman & his wife in his 70's that stays @ our house when he drives thru on his travels. I have tried to help out with some of the stuff over the past 10 years.

I will try and post some pictures later.

The "Alliance" will be a good thing & I get to save some coin with the vendors.

It's funny that the HAMB even needed to be defended, yes there is some flaming, not like it used to be though. There are some hardasses about staying "on topic" but it's a pretty narrow focus and it's frowned on to go outside that focus. But I have to say more often than not the people that get hammered didn't take the time to figure out what the forum is about before they go down the wrong path. It takes a little thicker skin to make it over there, but as was stated the friends made are some of the best people I know in the world. They will go to bat for you in a second, send you parts that you need, drive hours and hours out of their way to help someone out. I can only think that the same attitude shown here is the same attitude that got you "the treatment" over there...

It's true after 4 pages every thread ends up off course. The Alliance on HAMB is to offer discounts on vendors products and services. An Alliance on Garage Journal would include HAMB members.

Just read on the HAMB Ryan is going to travel down under. Hope he gets a chance to visit a few Garage Journal Members and not just HAMBers.

Bull I think we have a good group here. We just need some group motivation and perhaps a tidy up here on the forum so it covers what the No 1 topic should be - Garages and what we do in them and not to forget us the people that use them.

I do remember, a few years ago, a fellow was posting on there about some big old Pontiac from the '60s. It was either a wagon, or a four door, or just a huge fullsize Poncho, I can't recall. They expressly stated that they were sort of allowing him there even though his car didn't really fit. But, they then got tired of his approach and I think he was chased away.

That's how my admittedly flawed memory remembers it going down, at least.

I'm not a member on the HAMB (and I haven't stayed at a Holiday Inn Express in a long time) but I was wandering around and found build threads to a lot of different vehicles. I would guess as long as you're not obnoxious they will let you stick around.

One of the builds of interest was a 59 ElCamino. My first car when I was a kid. It was DEFINITELY NOT a rat rod...

It is not a "Rat Rod" website and this moniker has been so over used it just has nothing in common with 'Traditional Rods" or Traditional Customs ".
It is a negative with it's over - usage for anything that supposably old and rusty.
