Character limit per post was changed from 10K to 20K in March '17 and now I'm bumping up against that limit in a few of my posts. Glad to hear there should be no limit.

I also edit very old posts often. Glad to hear that won't change.

Please give us a few days notice for the scheduled outage so we can prepare for the temporary withdrawal.

A few of my posts have marquees and embedded youtube videos using iframe syntax. Any issues with those?

Just a few posts up, Ryan said there will be the same editing limits as current and that there may be a character limit

To say that Vertical Scope doesn't like me much would be a gross understatement.

I don't think anyone needs to worry about that.

Totally understand the necessity for the move and like all of us, I really appreciate all you do to keep this place alive and well.

If I may offer a pet peeve from the site transitions I've seen, is there some way to not require an avatar box in the signature area to the left? I don't use one and find it unnecessary to have a capital letter on a random color background assigned. I find it just clutters things up.

I have a 70 billion dollar publicly trade company that hates me, I took them on and sent them packing, probably cost them a few million dollars plus future revenue. It was a fun time. ;)

Wouldn't mind hearing that story sometime, and could you do the same with every cable/satellite company? lol

All IT projects start with a voodoo ritual or ten.

I worked in IT for over 30 years before retiring. I have seen some incredible disasters. The biggest one done by a Fortune 50 company was an attempt to replace an ancient IBM mainframe database purchasing system. Years in the making. Millions of dollars. In the end it was scrapped because V2, which was necessary to cover all of the functionality they missed in V1, was going to cost more than buying new mainframes and continuing to run the old database.

That sounds like "Job Scope"

Ryan,...question....

Will you be able to host 'both' with maybe a switch to allow users to select the 'classic' look?

Yes.

You haven’t seen it yet. Already hate it. I’ve been through a redesign or two and expect stuff like this. Still not fun though.

Give it a chance. If you hate it, just stop using the forum.

Either way, it has to happen. There’s a reason most privately held forums have moved away from VB. There’s also a reason there aren’t many privately held forums anymore.

Hahaha

RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE :willy_nil

Looking forward to see what it turns out like. I usually only access GJ from my desktop so not really worried about any issues. Either way, deals will drop and we'll still spend too much money. :lol_hitti

Party on dudes!

www.tdiclub.com is a privately held forum that migrated from vBulletin to Xenforo last year.

They did a pretty good job keeping the same feel, while incorporating some new features.

One feature that they have not been able to bring over so far is the quick forum jump tab at the bottom of each screen. I really miss this as I find it awkward to navigate to other forum discussion areas.

Edit - took a look at hamb and the quick navigation menu you have there seems like it does the trick.

If it is going to be like the HAMB forum, it is going to be fantastic. That one is easily my favorite to read and navigate of the tens of tens of forums I frequent.

Thanks Ryan for putting an effort into what you do, rather than just phoning it in like most folks seem to do nowadays!

.....Same format....

Right on! The current HAMB format and its features have been great. The like button is a good addition, and notifications for subscribed threads or being quoted, without having to get an email is one im a fan of. Looking forward to it!

I think Strouty is funny as $hit in this thread. Nice to read his replies that don't involve moving Perk or OMC.

I look forward to the change.

Just by coincidence I changed my toothpaste last week.

All of these words and acronyms mean nothing to me. Talking about switching platforms in front of me is like giving a wristwatch to a pig and asking him what time it is.

All I know is, I fear change.

I am somewhat afraid of change but I guess it is for the better.

If Ryan is reading this or anyone else for that matter, I will need help if the picture format changes; it took me so long just to load a picture and now if that changes I will need a lot of help.

Ryan I am color blind but I so loved the two scheme color of blue & white because it was so easy on my old eyes if you could keep it simple I would love that.

I personally hate the Hamb set up, but I've only been on that site a small number of times. Hopefully, because I'm on this site daily, I'll get used to it here.

Most of ya'll are talking low level stuff and I haven't seen anyone bring up something of high importance. We have smilies now and they are cute and all but what about GIFs?

You should of reached out to the community for beta testers. I have a knack for breaking sh!t and finding bugs. Bosses always try to pull me into QA roles even though I want it to be the smallest part of my jobs.

Oh man... SAP is the worst...
As for bugs, I'm not all that great at testing... And I don't have the budget to hire testers... So, there will be bugs initially. Thankfully, however, I am pretty good at fixing bugs and ironing stuff out.

He did, and said that in this very thread

I'm on a couple of Xenforo forums (Both VS owned and private) and I can say there is a huge difference between the two. I actually kind of like the privately owned Xenforo forum.

I will say that the vBulletin forums have always seemed to be the most straight forward and easy to read forums, but I also work in IT and understand change and the reasons for such.

Can't wait to see the new forum Ryan, and hope you have time to stock up on your favourite beverage and tylenol for the upgrade. As you said issues and headaches are just part of the process.

Thanks for your work on this site - i get so much out of it. If a refresh is needed from time to time in order for me to continue to access and enjoy the content, then I'm happy to do so.

I hope the mobile version isn't as bad as some forums. For some the mobile version is unusable. Right now, GJ is just a small version of the desktop site.

I think the real issue for most people is a lot of forums also make changes to the UI when they go to XenForo, or they simply make no effort to even keep the color scheme the same as the old site and just go with the default.

Thanks for the "heads up" Ryan.
I'm just glad you allow me to cruise around the forum.
The folks here tend to overthink and over engineer a lot of stuff but that's okay.
I chuckle, or get inspired...so I'll be pulling out the CB again, just in case.
And we will see ya all on the "flip flop!"

I came to say, "as long you're not doing to garage journal what Vertical Scope did to LS1GTO.COM you'll be fine."

Then I went over to ls1gto and noticed it was zenforo :(

It destroyed that forum.

I don't want to just be another piss and moaner that you will just tell to "leave if you don't like it"... So I'll make an attempt at being objective.

First and foremost. Threads were lost in my ex-favorite forum. A tremendous amount of legacy information vanished in the change.

Second. The new zenforo format favored "trending" threads and the layout is now taylored to a "reddit" style "hey, look at what they're looking at" home page. For my money, which is $0usd I understand, I like a forum to have an "at a glance" "where would I like to go" approach. Maybe it's just the old school part of me that grew up on command prompts. But I like a list tree.

Last. The member profiles and navigation therein became ponderous. Some times I want to find something and the route to it is. Member profile, threads creates by member and I can whittle down what notion I was having. In the zenforo they used. The profile flow is gone. Now everything is labeled as a "discussion" and you cannot parse out an individual thread a member created or search / sort their "posts" as now they are not posts they are "discussions" and handle differently.

I want to reiterate that XenForo can look like and do nearly whatever you want it to.

Vertical Scope uses a theme and template that minimizes the amount of work they have to do and maximizes SEO (search engine optimization) and ad-revenue. Unfortunately both of those things tend to make the experience for the users far worse.

It's pointless to keep complaining about what XenForo looks like on other forums, because XenForo doesn't look like anything in particular. It just looks like a generic forum when you first fire it up.

I thought Ryan implied he was going to set it up like Hamb?

Ryan - Thanks for all the work behind the scenes and keeping this a private site. It's not a trivial effort or expense. Another shout out to the moderators and all their time/effort with managing spam, dealing with all the people issues, etc. Collectively, you keep things in order and enable this site to be such a fantastic resource for so many people.

I've been a part of two other forum transitions from Vbulletin to XenForo

www.impalassforum.com - owned by Vertical Scope
Poorly managed, zero communication ahead of time, minimal communication from anyone who can do anything about issues (and that was just for the first couple weeks). Any remaining issues - tough poopie, deal with it.

[Rant=on]New format changes for the sake of change are frustrating from an end user standpoint - need a decoder ring to figure it out. All the same functionality is there (mostly) but it's in a different spot, called a different thing, works different, etc. Truly a waste of time/effort for zero (perceived) benefit other than change.

Not unlike Windows/Office updates - Nobody would want a car with the gas and brake pedals switched just because some UI designer thought it looked better - don't change basic things that don't need changing!!! (see my username...).

All of this can be avoided with good communication and expectation management (but it wasn't). Tell me what's going to happen, what changes are coming, why we need to do it, what will be better (and why) what will be worse and you'll have a loyal following through the process. [/Rant=off]

I've figured out how to do all the things I want to with it in time
I really like "dark mode" - much easier on the eyes
I like click on the thread title to go to the first unread post - just easier than the little button.
Auto sizing of pictures is really appreciated
Formatting of your post (inserting pictures, automatic preview, WYSIWYG editing) is better
The auto "collapse" of a quoted post is frustrating when the reply is in the quoted post (kind of like multi-quote in VBulletin). You have to click to expand the collapsed quote, then find where the reply is. As frustrating as people who quote a huge long post just to say "nice" are, this is equally frustrating.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

www.tdiclub.com - Privately owned
Well managed, good communication ahead of time, ongoing support and direct communication with the owner (Fred) about issues, etc.

Since having already been through the impalass changeover, I was familiar enough and mentally prepared for the change. This along with good communication made it relatively painless.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I expect Garage Journal will be very similar to TDIClub (and Ryan has proven to live up to this expectation) and things will go relatively smoothly.

I use xenforo on other forums. Its great and much more convenient when browsing many threads or looking for replies to posts. Looking forward to the update!
