When you go to a pal’s house after he’s remodeled the kitchen do you say; “Man, this new kitchen *****!”?

Curious… cuz it’s sort of the same thing. :)

Regardless, xenforo is far superior to VB in every way. Yes, some people will hate change… but I’d hope most would understand why and have some chill about it.

I've got to admit, I was one of the ones nervous about the change, as every forum I'd been on that switched from VBulletin to XenForo had major issues with layout and searches after the change. Since the initial announcement here though, one of the other forums I'm on switched from the latest Vbulletin to Xenforo, and it still has a smooth clean layout, search works, and there do not seem to be aby issues with stray attachments getting added or lost. That proved to me that properly done, the change is no issue to the quality of the forum, the issue is with improper implementation instead.

Good luck with the task, and I look forward to the other side.

You might be on to something:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

Remember the panic of 2000 rolling over, a lot of people was worried the computers wouldn’t recognize the year 2000.

Companies spent many billions of dollars to make sure Y2K was a non-event. Big companies had teams working on Y2K for years in advance. A lot of computer systems were replaced solely because they had issues with Y2K. I bet some of those systems might still be running today if not for Y2K.

Xenforo might be better for the admins, but it is usually bad for the users. Xenforo has killed many forums as users all left due to the poor look and feel of Xenforo. I have seen a number of forums where usage is down to a few posts a week after going to Xenforo.

The forum software has very little to do with the look and feel. If inclined, you could limit the functionality of Xenforo and make it look like VB... I'm not interested in doing that though.

Take your time.

Good Luck

Thank you fellas.

That would be hilarious! Forum is obviously still up, but much of the content posted this morning will be lost as we are essentially doing a DB dump right now.

Xenforo has killed many forums...

No it hasn't.

If the TGJ tanks, everyone leaves, and I'm left in the gutter... it will be because of me, not Xenforo...

Again, Xenforo is far superior to VB in every single way. This isn't opinion. It is what it is...

Ohhh... and as far as search goes, I think search ***** in both VB and Xenforo...

It must be my imagination then that several forums I frequented because ghost towns immediately after switching to Xenforo. The users stayed away in droves because the look and feel was just horrendous.

Xenforo seems to cause forum owners to get stupid and make really poor decisions about the look and feel of their forums. I see a lot of the changes and wonder WTF the forum admin was thinking when he/she chose the new look and feel.

It's the change effect most likely.

Most people (especially older folks) don't like change. You give them change, even if for the better, and they reject it.

Combine this with the fact that when you make such a huge software upgrade like switching from VB to XF, you are bound to have a large bug list initially. These growing pains are often confused for baseline software issues by people that aren't knowledgeable or intimate with forum software.

We will 100% have bugs once we are done. Probably a lot of them. We will also have style complaints. The key is to address them as quickly as possible and listen to your audience. Even so, we will still have people leave because of the change effect.

Large software companies avoid this by implementing changes slowly. Example - you've never seen Google or Facebook or any large consumer facing platform make wholesale changes like I am doing because they do them over a course of a year or even longer in an effort to avoid the change effect and lost revenues...

I don't have their budget or resources, so am I forced to deal with it.

Update: Migration is taking far longer than we thought. As such, forum will remain up overnight.

Woo-hoo! Time to make a horribly political and religious thread then deny I ever did it!

Bring on the improvements. Being an older folk I really have no problem with change for the good. And I ain't changing that.
