I know this thread isnt a request thread but I do have some. I started a mobile equipment repair business. It's been going well for 6 months and Iv been investing in tools/equipment. I just bought my first service truck and Iv hired a guy part time. The guy Iv hired is new to mechanic'ing. I literately hired him from a tire shop that was paying him $7/hr and working him 6 days a week. Anyway, he doesnt have many tools at all and the ones he has are hand me down ****. Im going through what I have to giv him but I could use some more stuff. I think he has a couple screw drivers, some pliers, and a hammer. Let me know if anyone has anything they can send me.
On a side note, if anyone has any specialty heavy equipment tools they want to get rid of I could use them.

Not really sure why you would hire a "mechanic" with no tools but why don't you just buy him something like this?

http://www.walmart.com/ip/39073441?...39570152&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=90980081552&veh=sem

Lot easier than trying to hobbling together an entire set for somebody from scratch.

On a side note, if you have enough scratch to buy a truck, put a few thousand dollars into a wrap job, equip it with (expensive) spot lights, tools (hopefully) and hire guys to work for you...

I don't think I would ask for handouts in that position, but that's just me.

I'll never understand why people come on here crying the blues (which I've no problem with) but they can't take the time to indicate where they live/are???? Are you really so paranoid you can't even put down the STATE?

I need to visit the Tool section more, I didn't even know about this thread!!!!!

I have 4 Kennametal Toolholders to swap for something, or to send to anyone who can use them. I paid $25 each, but I can't use them in my CNC mill. I need Erickson Quick Change #30 taper. These will use a drawbar.

These are #30 taper but NOT quick change. The sizes are .625, .250, .187, and .125 in decimal size or 5/8", 1/4", 3/16", and 1/8" in fractional size.

Although this is the tool section, I really don't need any tools that I can think of right off, but if someone needs them, they are yours. I may swap for a sign or two to hang in the garage, but not necessary. So if anyone needs them, shoot me a PM, or reply here

Horizontal mill cutters up for trade.
Trade does not have to be equal value, just interesting.
I'm going to waste them in an art project if you don't trade me.
$500 worth of blades are going to become drink coasters....

are any real small ?

what size is the biggest one?

what would u like in trade ?

Here's something I found the other day on a pick. I don't need them and likely wouldn't ever use them but thought they might be cool for one of you with a Bridgeport. Just claim them!

Really wish I had the machine to put these through their paces Duck. Hell you're right though, they'll make interesting coasters

I have a mill but it's a Lagun.

I don't need them, but I just wanted to say that all my years around machines and mills, I have never saw a set of Bridgeport wrenches. Those need a little polishing lovin' done on them and will make someone a nice set.

And I would like to remind ones that this is the Generosity thread. Not a collectors thread. So please, don't just grab something for a monetary gain.

And I need to go through my toolboxes to see what I have to get rid of.

Hey Duck, I'm going to speak with my neighbor shop owner and see if he can use those. He does a lot of specialty stuff (he's "recasting" all the brass bases for all the flags in the White House now). I'll see what he might have to offer up to you.

The thread title is "The generosity thread". I hired this guy for part time work when I need a second hand on a job. He wants to learn the trade and I like to teach so it's a good fit so far. I know when I first started getting the experience was difficult but buying all the tools you need to start is daunting for someone making $8/hr(his old tire shop wage). You need the tools to make more money but cant make more money without them. Iv given him all the extra stuff I have. Eventually Ill get another truck and if he proves to be a good hand Ill put him in another truck. I didnt have any help or handouts when I started and it was frustrating. I just thought maybe some guys in the "generosity" thread might like to help him also.
Your mentality about my purchasing is ignorant. Had it not been for a family friend investing the money I wouldnt have the truck. The wrap cost $2200 which I swapped labor for. I won the Golight 4 years ago in a contest at work and the headlights were given to me. I have most of the tools I need and the ones I need for a job I go buy/borrow/rent. A lot of equipment has a specific tool to do a specific job and some of them Im unaware of at this point. I posted the equipment tool request to see if anyone had a specific tool for something that they didnt need. Iv given away various tools and supplies over the years to someone that needed them and I had no use for it anymore.

Benbrook TX. I have no problems with people knowing where I live. I must have skipped over the question when I created my profile.

Stephen,

My problem is you come on here begging for your woefully underpaid EMPLOYEE . You give no clue as to what he needs but assume everybody just knows. If he needs things, tell him to sign up for account on garage journal just like everybody else. As his BOSS, it seems perhaps you should be a little more invested in him and perhaps actually entertain the suggestion of you, his boss, actually picking up the tab for a $100 set of starter tools. If you're that damn cheap, then deduct it out of his checks over time.

As for this being the generosity thread. Why yes it is. Note it is not the "equip my service truck and fund my enterprise because I don't know how this whole business thing works " thread...

I post 2 situations of people that can use some tools in a thread of people willing to give away tools and Im the bad guy? As far as me not investing money in an employee(or enough money in your opinion) exactly how much money should I give away in order to be a successful business owner like yourself? If anyone posted on here needing/wanting a tool I had that I no longer needed Id give it to them if I felt inclined to. I dont care what their reason is or how much money they make. You've posted some sockets your willing to give away on here so would you have not given it away if someone asked for it or not given them away if you found out they own a business? It sounds like you have some issues with bosses, owners, or people you assume make a lot of money.

You still have not answered the simplest of questions...

What tools are needed? Instead of writing a novel each time, just answer the question.

I could send him a bucket of 9mm sockets, but I'm guessing he probably doesn't need them. How is anyone supposed to guess what is needed?

Stephen4785.....Don't take this as a bashing thread, and don't take it wrong if I may come across as a ****, but you actually do have a few things going against you right at the moment. You are a relatively new member, you are asking for tools to get an employee started that works for you who IS NOT a member on here, you don't specifically mention details, and lastly, you get snippy with older members.

Normally how it works is sort of a pay it forward sort of deal, and not just a general give my **** away to someone I have no clue about. Like I said, I'm not trying to come across as a ****, but if this person is your employee, as to which we have not even had the courtesy of knowing his name as he is not a member, and you have a business that is large enough to have an employee(s), can you not finance his tool purchases through payroll deduction?

I mean....if you stand on the other side of the fence, how do a lot of people know that this isn't a ******** story, and you are looking for items for yourself, or items to take to the weekly swap meet?

Normally a member will mention that they could use this tool or that tool, and may have this to trade or that to trade, and are either known on the site, have fellow members to vouch for them, or have made dealings in the past with fellow members.

But coming on and saying "I have an employee that needs everything" (in a nutshell) is a little out of the norm. No one is out to bust your balls (I don't think), but any site that has anything to do with tools and/or trading, you will most likely get the same response.

What sort of business, how many employees, yearly gross income........is it at all possible that you could help him finance his tools somehow, or is he ******* away $10 a day on smokes, and $50 a week or beer? What would he (or you) be willing to swap to pay it forward?

And I don't say this because I have a lot of posting, but I only mention this, because although I am on disability, and my wife is retired and we are both on a limited income with medical expenses, before I would even ask for myself, I would tell my story and offer up something for barter first. It's only proper to do so, and it is something that most on here have done. Ones that know me, know that I ALWAYS pay forward first, and I let them know, and some will even attest to the fact. That seems to be the Garage Journal way also.

And again...as I said, no one wants to be, or sound like a ****, but c'mon man.....asking to supply an employee out of someone else's generosity?

I think that is awesome. Tells me that people are being honest about what they need. I could call dibs on it but I don't need it or wouldn't use it.

I agree, it is awesome somebody hasn't grabbed it to re list on ebay. gj67stang, someone who can use it will claim it eventually. I have a 3/4 set but I only need them for my body cart/rotisserie, which don't need torquing. Do I have a "hole" in my tool inventory that would fill? Yes. Do I need it? No.

Hi everyone, I was referred to this page by twertsy.
I am 20 years old and am a student at montgomery college pursuing myassociates degree of science& automotive technology to be a technician. I have 3.5 years ahead of me and don't have a lot of tools. I bought a few and learned that if you want quality tools you have to spend a lot. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Folks, I spoke with Nathan on the phone and will be helping him out with a few items, although my inventory is lacking in Metric tools, which a new tech invariably needs rather than SAE. If y'all have extra Metric stuff occupying your boxes, I'm confident he will put them to good use. Let's not let this thread, nor the generosity I've seen since joining this site, die.

Man this thread went south quick.

The man is trying to help a young man needing tools as requested in OP and all he gets is grief. Come on!!! Just because he can afford a service truck doesn't make him responsible for supplying the world with tools.

If it has gone South it is due to your condemnation of those giving, and you've offered nothing tangible. You've given nothing through the thread and admonish those that have.
You'd have to look North to see OUR South.

What was the purpose of your post.

First I never condemned anyone at anytime just politely defended another poster.

I have three sons that I'm currently helping to build tools caches for. One is 27 years of age married with two kids and currently a dodge tech. He is always rummaging through my boxes for any spares I have. (He does ask before taking) The oldest is a engineering student with a talent for finish carpentry. So any wood working stuff that's extra goes to him. The third could care less about tools. As long as he can change his car battery, oil and tighten down a loose screw he is happy.

So I'm sorry that I don't have any extras laying around to hand out. Not that I'm not willing. My charitable donations are around 15% of my gross income. Donate more then a few hours of labor each year to good causes.

I'm just failing to see where Stephent4785 has gone wrong, besides putting a need out there instead waiting for someone to say here is what I have?

stephen4785 never said what he pays the young man. He does state what his old wage at the tire shop was. And by the sound of it, Stephen was not please with that wage. So one can assume that Stephen is paying him a little better at least. Along with passing down some extra tools he has.

This thread had gone south way before I made my first post in it. This is my second and last post in it. And I will not be back to view it again.

Out

Glen

Ingersol Rand 1/2" metric impacts in blow mold case. Can be shipped without case to save on shipping. Sadly it's missing the 10mm socket

To Lx460 and everyone else.
this is what I pm'd lx460
I havent been on this board since the last message I replied to in that thread because I was getting too upset. Im going through a pretty tough time right now and I got overly upset by one of your replies. I'm sure you're a great guy and you don't deserve me posting ******** insinuations about you.
I apologize about my replies on this thread. Im going through a lot of personal stuff right now and it's spilling over on the forums I go to. My company is doing great but my personal life is a train wreck.

I have two 1/2 ratchets to give away.
Both older USA. One is Husky, non-quick release. Has removed engravings.
Other is Craftsman -V-, quick release. Also has removed engravings.

I recently just upgraded mine so I don't need these and figure they could go to someone who could use them and/or is just starting out.

In case anyone is wondering the provenance and why they are scratched off: I purchased them from an older gentleman who put his name and initials on all of his stuff. When he was ready to downsize and sell he scratched it all off.

M-EGT, thanks for the contribution, and for getting this thread back up to the top. I had all but given up on it. Hopefully some young folks can use your ratchets to get them started! Thanks again! Todd.
