I’m on a road trip gathering up a few goodies for the garage
I’m in Tennessee tomorrow and Chicago by the weekend then I’m headed home
I’ll happily help you reduce those plates
Everyone is making it much harder than it needs to be
I’ll get ahold of you when I get home

Oh, very very nice of you, Don. Your hands are very very full. Don't worry too much about these plates but I'd love taking to you about them.

Very nice looking truck. I’m sure you have shared the run down on the truck in the past. Care to share again the drivetrain and any cool upgrades or what is still factory??

Here's the link to my build thread over on another forum. It's very long, sorry.

Its drivetrain is a Chevrolet 6.0 LS with 81,000 miles. It still showed factory hone marks but was freshly honed and re-ringed, new main, rod & cam bearings installed. Mildly cammed w/heavier valve springs. Holley EFI using a throttle body that looks like a carburetor & Delmo valve cover adapters to allow me to use Edelbrock finned aluminum valve covers. The coils were moved to the top of the frame rails on each side.

The Trans is a 4l85e and rear end is a Ford 8.8 limited slip with "freeway" gearing. Flipped it on top of the full stack of factory leaf springs - I thought I might tow with it (I never will) shoulda installed the Vette IRS too. I used Flatout Engineering's IFS cross member that in turn uses Corvette C4 components so it has power disc brakes all around. Dakota Digital HDX gauge cluster. The wheels are Boyd Smoothie 1's I bought via Craigslist and had re-polished.

There's a whole other story about the condition it was in when I bought it, and its first iteration as a shop truck for a few years. Thanks for your interest!

A new "adventure" begins. Been raining here on and off for weeks and today we wake up to find the ceiling leaking! CRAAAP.

We wake up this morning and drywall tape is popping off in two places. In the attic I can see where the leak is more or less. I've got a roofer coming Friday to fix the leaks. In the mean time I climbed into the attic to inspect and placed containers to catch the water. While raining hard this morning one caught maybe 2 cups in about 3-4 hours.

The back story is a nightmare we've been in since last June with a solar company that now appears to have gone out of business and been replaced with another that we will try to get to stand behind the warranty. Yeah, right. We'll see how that goes.

Dan, much as I would love to put solar panels on our roof, your nightmare is exactly what I expect to happen. "We'll save you a fortune in electric bills" and "We guarantee our work" means absolutely nothing if you have to fix their screwups. One of my grandsons was in the sales end of the business and much as I love him I don't trust the people he worked for. They remind me of the Travelers who come by and tell you "We're in the neighborhood and have some leftover sealer" when all they have is a bucket of used motor oil to pour on your asphalt driveway. Guaranteed to last through one rainfall.

Hi Bob, Yup I'm terribly disappointed. Even their own field people told me the sales people over promise and leave it to the installation guys to try to meet expectations. In their case they said they'd have no problem working on our roof that has lightweight concrete tile roofing.

On the first day the installers showed up (late by a couple weeks - over promising) and saw it they called in to tell their bosses what we had and were told to do the work and tell us they would replace any broken tile. They did but of course they couldn't find exact matching tile in color nor size. Multiple times of having to go find some took months - jobs were stacking up and not enough installers to do the work! The "final" work was only done about six weeks ago and we have been waiting since to get a final inspection - which the contractor has to arrange as they pulled the permit. In the middle of that, many many texts and calls to the finance company revealed the solar company wasn't able to keep up and is being replaced. We're in the middle of that now.

We WILL get this resolved and in the end it will work but it's going to extract much frustration. I am trying hard not to allow myself to get too worked up/angry about it. Not worth having a heart attack over. The technology is solid but where the rubber meets the road is the problem. As I write this it is raining HARD. No, not SoCal hard, REALLY hard and it's been going on for weeks. They're using the "atmospheric river" terminology which isn't as much hype as others might think. Tomorrow's news will be filled with floods, down trees, power losses.

PS: Crawling over joists and under wires as I'm heading toward age 69, breathing in dust and fiberglas, snagging myself on nails makes all this all the more difficult and frustrating. I'm "calling it" - after age 70, EFF this stuff. Time to get younger guys to do this kind of stuff including hanging Christmas lights, topping the 30 ft tall Ficus hedges in back yard, etc.

Did you get the leak fixed? I've been dealing with leaks for a few months. I interviewed numerous roofers and the quickest i can get my roof redone is the end of April. My roof has 3 tarps on it. So far they are holding.

I've got a guy coming out Friday morning. Til then, buckets in the attic but man is it a major crawl over/under and through things to get them. Tough on the old guy body, sheesh.

Quick FYI to the eastern guys:

Watching tv last night and a red banner came across the screen with "Tornado Warning for LA and Ventura Counties". HOLY ****. In Southern California? I've lived here my entire life and we've never had a tornado that I'm aware.

Turned out winds were recorded at 102 mph near Magic Mountain in the area called Valencia just north of metro LA. Damn, these storms are getting crazy serious.

EDIT:

Guess I was wrong. There HAS been a significant tornado here 40 years ago.

That's my neck of the woods. But I didn't see much more than about 30MPH winds. It's a big open area near Magic Mountain. I would occasionally see huge dust devils get kicked up near there.

The winds up north in the bay area were huge last night. There was what appeared to be a cyclone that hit San Francisco yesterday. My sister in Palo Alto got all her fences blown down one night. My brother said there were a lot of areas without power.

Dan,
I hope you get the roof and solar resolved.

Bob,
That's exactly how I feel. A lot of people around here have got them. Most of them have roof leaks now.
Had one guy show up and guarantee he could save me money. I said that's great. Then I showed my recent electric bill. It was $10.99. I asked if he would be able to cut my bill in half. Didn't tell him I had been out of town for a month and the bill included some energy rebates.

Don't feel too bad Dan about the water leaks My saloon floor is drenched and we just redid the entire roof with new plywood, tar paper and shingles. All on the brothel on the top of the saloon but the walk way above the saloon and in front of the brothel is puddling up a couple of inches in several spots and that is seeping down into the saloon ceiling and coming down between the tongue and groove cedar making it warp. New project next month here is my western town today

^^^ The western town looks really good. I hadn't seen it from that perspective with the lawn in front, etc. Very picturesque!

PS: Right now it's looking like Friday or Saturday for my visit, if still ok on your end. If Saturday I know we won't do any license plate restoration work - you'll have your hands full with the car club but I'll love seeing the BPG and of course everyone's cars! I'll call and let you know how things develop. Can't thank you enough for the invitation, Don!

Yesterday the local private school had a herd of deer on their lawn. There's usually one or two there when the new grass is there. They were very calm and didn't mind cars driving by. For us this is a lot of them to see all together at once. There were a couple more outside of the shot too. I still get a charge out of all the wildlife here when we didn't have it in Pasadena. Peacocks, coyotes, bobcat, rabbits, skunks, opossums, raccoons, even a duck and ducklings one day!

Visited the Big Party Garage today! It is incredible in pictures here. It is even MORE incredible in person. The more I looked the more I saw and Don has done all his restorations beautifully. All the arranging of signs and artifacts is flawless.

Those of you that haven't seen it and get a chance to attend Don's birthday gathering this summer should not miss it if at all possible.

PS: Don was incredibly generous to offer to restore my 1951 license plates for me. He sandblasted them, primered them twice and was about to paint them gloss black this afternoon. They will be BETTER than new.

THANK YOU DON! You're living' the dream, man!

Progress pictures!

Don just sprayed the gloss black. There are a lot of cars that don't have this nice a gloss black paint job. He has to let the paint cure a couple day before masking for the letters. More pictures to come when they're done and later when I get them through the DMV and mounted on my truck. I'm excited too.

The man is a miracle worker, ha ha.

Dan, are you allowed to put the '55' tab on that plate? They're available but not cheap. This pristine one is available for $120.
California License Tag.jpg

I'm not a collector but the history of California license plates is pretty cool. The 1951-55 plates appear to be the only ones with those four extra holes in the center.

Hi Bob,

Yes, I know about that one because I bit bullet and bought it yesterday! Such a ridiculous price for a tiny piece of metal but other ones I saw were $80+ and were nasty, rusty and even missing the little tab that bends around the plate. Oh what the hell! I already spent way too much on the entire truck.

Of course I also had to buy clean new frames in the old size and the little tabs that will have the 2023 and month stickers.

Dan, I think you did the right thing. After looking at the prices on the other tags you got a good deal. It's like stamp collecting -- condition is everything. On top of the condition, the one you bought is the correct color. The plate colors are one thing but the correct tag color is a real challenge. You could end up being a hero by having that tag color and letting the guys on the H.A.M.B. know what the formula to use.
