The sink will be a great addition. I'd love to have a sink in my garage but not workable. No drain anywhere near.

The metal "pegboard" is nice but you'll probably be better off with what you have. Lots of options for hooks, baskets, etc. and at a better price. And, you can fab up anything special you need and easily mount it.

Backsplash.... How about a 6" piece of melamine to match the cabinets? Just seal it up nice. Or, paint some Trex? I do like the metal ideas mentioned though. I don't think the diamond plate would look bad.

Dan, I found some 16 or 18 gauge SS at a salvage yard and it happened to be the right size to go behind a bench where I do metal stuff (grinding etc). I did not have to cut it nor was I using it as a backsplash where water was a problem. But it fit and looks good.
In your case, bending and fitment around the bench may be a consideration, but only if you plan on washing your pup in that sink.

Looking great so far. I just found your thread and have enjoyed catching up on your progress. I am anxious to see your floor. I like the red pegboard, and may have to copy that idea.

Keep it coming!

Hi Neil!

Well, we’ll see if the red pegboard looks ok or totally stupid! I may have come up with a dumb idea there, time will tell.

As I write this I’m getting ready to head out to Whittier to see a vintage metal kitchen base cabinet for under the new sink. I’m not liking the 4x4 legs - too clunky looking. Not sure this cabinet will be any better, it badly needs some attention.

Dan, how high do you want the backsplash? You can get custom sizes of SS online for a decent price. I can't remember for sure but you might be able to get it with the edges hemmed as well. Not sure if you want just a flat piece on the wall. The area is not that large, you could even throw up some subway tile for not a lot of money, just a thought. I know someone on GJ used subway tile in their shop and it looks great.

You can buy ceramic tile in many "industrial" finishes- diamond plate, brushed steel, etc. I know one of my customers did an office floor in ~16x16 raw steel-look tile that had countersunk screw heads in the corners- you had to look twice to know they were part of the tile and not real.
You don't need a lot of tile for the backsplash, shouldn't be too hard to find a look you like.

Another idea is to buy diamond plate remnants from a local supplier or on ebay. I bought 2 pieces of .060" aluminum diamond plate 12 x 48 for about $25 on an ebay best offer.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I'm not sure what I'm going to use. Thinking of the final "look" I'm tending toward a low 5-6" backsplash. I'm fairly neat so that would probably suffice. Maybe a painted 1x6 or a piece of white melamine - but that's always on MDF - NOT good for this purpose.

The 1950's metal kitchen base cabinet I bought this morning is a bust. The condition is good enough with a lot of sanding & priming but when I saw it in it's prospective place the look wasn't right for the garage. Plus, it would eliminate me being able to put my mini fridge under the sink. I'll probably relist it on CL or OfferUp or some such.

All in all today was unproductive where the garage is concerned other than taking some of the furniture we'd put in there back to the old house as part of "staging" it for new listing photos.

Alright....alright, you're already the cause of me doing more work (not really!) But I DID think of the pegboard hooks falling out issue and found THESE gizmos on Amazon. They arrived today but I haven't tried them out yet. Hoping for miraculous results.

I'm one of those guys that tend toward perfectionism but I'm not really up to it. So even though I admire the clean as a surgical suite garage, I know I'd never be able to keep one that way. I admire the heck out of a down & dirty but still organized garage. I want something in between so SOME commonly used tools will be on the pegboard but mostly things will be put away. it'll(hopefully) look pulled together and that's probably as good as it'll get.

I'm using the .205" diameter hooks, they seem to stay put where the smaller diameter ones just fall out. Best source for them=HF of all places, a fraction of the price from Uline or MSC.
They're pretty good, but going to try putting a piece of heat-shrink tube on a couple of them and see if it makes them even better.
I used the metal diamond plate pegboard from HD in my new garage, will post pics in another thread, don't want to hijack your new garage thread.

Go ahead and put the photos here if you want. I won't mind at all.

I have a TON of the 1/8" pegboard hooks from my old garage and the new house had a big box of brand news ones left here. I'm hoping be able to use them.

These "Pegitz" things are only $9.98 I think for 50 of them. If they work it'll save me having to buy different hooks.

"HD" - do you mean Home Depot? I haven't seen diamond plate pegboard at my Home Depot. It DOES have diamond plate but only relatively small pieces.

I actually really dig that sink. Having one big surface that is impervious to water is a luxury I wish I had in my shop.

Bending sheet stainless isn't that hard -- just clamp a block of wood in the right place and bend it over. Okay, a brake would be cleaner, but it can still be done without it.

that diamond plate pegboard is virtually the exact right size. I'm just thinking the holes in it don't really make for an ideal backSPLASH! - price is excellent though.

PD, Did your local HD carry it so did you have to order it? I've got to go there tomorrow so I'll check, thanks!

Jess, thanks for the comment. I'm really pleased with my sink & counter. Already very used to them and they're not truly done being installed yet!

Dan, I ordered the 16 x 48's online- they were cheaper than the smaller sizes they carried in the store. Shipped to the Apache Junction HD in 3 days. Cut the last row to size with a 4.5" angle grinder w/abrasive blade. I did a 48" x 184" swath of this stuff; I really like the look.

Thanks, Dude. Yesterday I was washed out my brush & roller tray and even though I was careful, diluted paint splashed all over. I had to wipe it all down immediately from wall and cabinet. My counter is 53" wide so I was thinking I would use the 48" and **** it against the cabinet on left with another partial piece on the cabinet side itself. But I'd really prefer a full width piece along the back so I'll hold off until I can find a price on one at least the full 53" width. I just don't want to have to buy a full 4x8 sheet because I don't have a use for all the leftover.

Lots of work today but not much that shows.

Painted & added height to the pegboard the PO had installed. Girlfriend said it looks bad not matching the height of the cabinet next to it. Bought, cut, and painted trim that will border it.

Started repairing the drywall under sink. It has 1/2" OSB under it (common wall with house) so I had to do that before installing drywall. Of course I ran a bit short. Yeah, I know, I know, "keep my day job". I'm a LOUSY drywaller. But it'll be under the sink when done so I doubt anyone will know but you guys.

Got the mesh tape and drywall. I’ve even had minor luck in the past “matching” texture with diluted mud & a long nap roller.

We’ve still not sold the old house due to the quarantine and very few buyers feeling confident about their jobs so I have two houses to do yard work. Ugh! It keeps me from making any progress.

EDIT: Since I did the other house yards I only got about 30 min in the garage. But I brought home my narrow crown stapler so I put the trim around the pegboard. I was going to do it the dark gray but ended using white.

It ain't much but it's one more item off the list.

Dan, having to do yard work on two places *****. :(. I'm not a big fan of yard work. What is the travel time between the two?

Ordinarily I AM a fan of yard work but front & back at 2 places I end up doing the minimum just to get it done.

Old place needs weeding. When I lived there it was just a couple min each time. Now that I don't live there the weeds have gotten ahead of me. Had 3 trees there that needed trimming before we moved. I procrastinated and finally had to have some yard guys come do it. They didn't do as good a job as I would have. Now 2 trees at the new place need it. Sheesh!

Drive is 20+ minutes. Not too bad though traffic has definitely picked up since we got here 4/1.

Wasn't going to post these pictures until the entire garage was done but....

Spent the day on my hands and knees but I got it all down. Well, except the perimeter tiles that I'll cut to size tomorrow. Someone said to leave 1/2"around the perimeter for movement due to temperature. Seems like a lot but ok.

I'm pretty sure I will be short a number of Graphite ones and I will have an entire extra box of Red because I originally intended to put a red stripe down the middle.

Easy job other than standing up & kneeling down 10,000 times.

Sorry there's still a lot of junk still in there (plus my truck is dusty!!). All of it isn't even here from the old house yet. Mainly my tool boxes, Hobart welder, etc. But I still I LOVE the look. Big thanks BikerNeil for the inspiration.

It looks great.
That 1/2" is necessary. Those tiles will grow that much in the sun. There are pictures of those floors in the afternoon sun, all tented up in a big bubble, or all wavy, because the owner wanted a tight fit. If you want to hide the edge gap, you have to do some kind of molding around the edge. Roppe has a 5/8" deep rubber cove molding that might work.

The floor looks fantastic! And I like watching your progress on all the other details in the garage. Those details take the overall look of the garage to the next level.

Great job Dan.

Thanks Kay, STG and Neil,

My garage door is West facing so it gets. HOT in the late afternoon. Also, I put the sink stand legs on top of the tile. I got thinking about it last night and decided I'd better change that.

I'll definitely keep the 1/2"gap and I'll go looking for the Roppe cove. Does ordinary vinyl cove from Lowe's, etc not have that deep a cove?

Lots and low of small stuff yet to be done. I wanted to get. the flooring down as a Father's Day gift to me and my daughter, S-I-L and granddaughters are coming over to spend the day in the pool so wanted it to show nicely.

Happy Father's Day to all fathers, and if you're not a father well... Happy Father's Day to YOUR father!

PS: Taped & mudded first coat on drywall patch yesterday. Sand and (hopefully?) "final" mud today. We'll see if the dust vacs out of the tile! (Yeah, shoulda done it before)

Better drywall dust than ceiling paint!

It’s looking good Dan. You’ve been going at it nonstop for weeks-Enjoy your Father Day off with the family!

Thanks guys.

I used up the last of the Graphite tiles along the back wall of the garage where it would be most visible. I have red and a full box of Alloy left but they don't work. I tried various combos and they all look like trying to use up the left overs. I'll make a count (plus a few) and give Justin a call on Monday.

Only one place on the floor had some damage - tiles covered that easily. Would have had to be repaired for epoxy or VCT. I cut around my sink stand legs. I'll use quarter round to cover the required 1/2" gap.

I have no idea. You'll have to measure the cove at Blowes. I'm pretty sure Dome Hepot carries the Roppe. Or, maybe I ordered it through them. It was spec on a job I did.
