The Golf Garage Introduction Thread

So long time member, first time poster!

I figured it was about time to make a contribution, as well as introduce myself.

My name is Mac and I live in Gulf Breeze Florida, just outside of Pensacola. I'm a General Contractor, who loves to tinker with all sorts of things, but outside of my family golf is my major hobby. Having played in college, I don't get to play near as much as I used to but even when I am not out on the course I like to tinker with golf clubs. With that being said, I will introduce the garage, and ask for your help!

We own our current home, but it is a short term solution until we build another home here on the golf course (yes imagine that!) which will be around the corner on a lot we already have. So what I am attempting to do is create more storage and work space in the current garage. One of the draw backs to our current garage is that my wife's expedition must still be able to park inside during the night. We are already pushing those limits as is by about 6 inches it clears the garage door. So I'll insert a few pictures here and a little diagram to show dimensions.

Biggest draw back is we have no yard for a small shed and the golf cart has to stay parked inside as well. I am open to giving it a total clean out and start from scratch but budget will dictate what I can and can't do. The one thing major for me is I like a nice clean garage with everything in its place and behind doors if possible, however there are times like right now it's not possible. One of my requirements will be a work station where I can mount my golf club bending machine and putter bending machine. The one thing about it is that when making those adjustments it takes a bit of force and the base can't move. Ideally I'd have something moveable but that could be heavy enough not move when working with the clubs. I do not currently have a welder however I am flirting with the idea of buying one to weld as it would come in handy for some construction projects.

Enough of me talking and I appreciate any suggestions or help!

WC: can you put a picture up of the floor plan of your house. some guys drive their golf carts into their homes from the golf course side of the house which might free up the other half of the garage that doesn't have your wife's car in it for a shop.

my dream is to live on a nice golf course and have a big enough lot to have a shop detached from my house. my budget might not include living on a golf course and happy to see you are already on one.

welcome again to the group and feel free to post on the Golf 101 thread in free parking and maybe share your method of bending putters. are you changing the lofts? i knew two guys in my area that made putters for a few touring pros and they didn't have a putter loft bending machine to change existing putters.

Unfortunately what you see is basically all I have for now as far as floor plan. I have to use same door as car and where it is in pictures is pretty much my only option for parking.

Living on it is great but will be much better once I get the other house built. It is in a flood zone, so will basically have a whole shop underneath with 10' ceiling and probably in the 1500 sqft area. As I get further into this I will update that as well.

I'll have to check out the other thread as well. As far as the putters I have a Scotland loft lie machine for irons and mitchell loft lie for putters. Have yet to use either at this point hence the need for a mobile workstation.

So the plan for the day is to create some storage above the garage door. I am going to attempt to get some things out of the cabinets and get some stuff off of the floor.

I am thinking even though they are a good fit I would like to sell the current cabinets and craftsman toolbox and get some metal cabinets or a harbor freight 44" for additional storage and it would serve as a place for my mobile workstation. Most of the space in the lower cabinets are taken up by paint cans and junk we don't ever use so by putting it above the door it would be out of the way and not taking up valuable space in cabinets. The one thing I am struggling with is what to do with my air compressor to get it off the floor and also would like to get our small shop vac off of the floor as well. My only concerns are where and how?

Any input or suggestions would be appreciated!

Mac: a lot of the guys have their compressor sitting outside their garages and run plumbing or hoses inside the shop/garage. some build sheds or even a Rubbermaid plastic shed could work to keep the rain off your compressor. they are noisy buggers and take up a bit of room so your call and just throwing out an idea.

Hi and welcome to the GJ Mac all the best with your makeover. I feel your pain when it comes to lack of space.

I found I had to bite the bullet and get rid of stuff to make room by either selling it or donating it to a charity. It is amazing how small changes can make a huge difference.

So we live in an HOA community and no outside shed or anything, even if had room for it. House next door is less than 5 feet away on both sides (hence the reason this one is temporary).

Unfortunately as well there is nothing else to get rid of at this point. Anything that is work related has been moved to my tool trailer and really only thing left is paint from our house, kids toys, car and golf cart. So it's just stacked up. Biggest reason is I can't work at the work bench ha

Will you keep your house once you move into the new one? If, not I'm not sure I would put much into the existing garage. Garage upgrades do not add that much to resales. Also, as a GC, you know building a new home has a lot of unforeseen expenditures and you may want to save everything you can for your new place.

We built a new home in a golf course community and there were a lot achitectural guidelines and hidden fees that ended up costing a lot more than expected.

MD this house will go away once we move into the new one. That is the reason this is a budget Reno based on using scraps from other projects and my time. My only basis for doing this is to allow me to have the room to work on my golf clubs and other small projects around the house. Not much use in having a work bench if you can't get to it to work.

As for the other house yes there will be unexpected costs when the construction eventually starts but with the amount of time we will have put into planning the new house there won't be many. We are probably a year to a year and a half away from starting there and I am already salivating over the additional space I will have once complete.

WC: since you've maybe done this before all i can do is wish you the best in the new build and hope it goes close to as planned in time and costs.

do you still need ideas for your current garage? just ask and maybe post up a few more pictures so maybe one of us can give you some thoughts.
