My name is Al.
I am an addict.
I can't get enough Harbor Freight.
I haven't been to a Harbor Freight for three days now, and it's a struggle.
I lie awake at night, thinking of that SMELL.
You know the one, burnt rubber and B.O.
I miss the place, but with your support, and the grace of God, I will overcome it.
One day at a time.

(Be careful what you wish for.)

Hi Al!

Don't fight it, just give in and all will be well.

I’m not a Snap-On guy. I’m a Craftsman “USA” guy. I’ve always thought of Harbor Freight as good place to go for Zip Ties and gardening gloves.

Are the tools REALLY that great? I mean, Craftsman here at garagejournal is equal to the word “****”, so it can’t be any worse, right? Those red/black handle Pittsburgh pro ratchets look pretty sweet. The sockets look meh to me as I see that **** floating around with the other rusty sockets in a wooden box at my father-in-law’s pawn shop. They have this stigma about them. If you can convince me otherwise, maybe I’ll go spend some money there.

How’s their wrenches? My Dad has a set. Made In India I believe. That appeals to me about as much as a date with Rachel Maddow... ****. Bleh.

That's funny, because HF's wire ties and gardening gloves are complete ****. Meanwhile, the ratchets and sockets are pretty darn good... way better than the last USA Craftsman IMO. (Not to be confused with *all* Craftsman... just saying the very last USA before they moved overseas.)

They are opening a new store that is 45 minutes drive from my house. 15 minutes closer than the only other store in my area. Am really looking forward to the grand opening as I am just a DIY'er and homeowner and I haven't bought anything yet at HF that I consider junk. I really like the color coded racheting wrenches and sockets, I can just reach for "the green one" instead of having to read the sizes every time.

Personally I think their sockets are very good; I have never managed to break one. They fit fasteners well, chrome quality is excellent. Only annoyance is the skipped sizes.

Their ratchets are just WAY better than they have any right to be at the price they charge. My favorite is actually their cheapest ratchet, the composite one. It's just a joy to work with. It's stronger than you would ever think, the action on both of mine is butter smooth. It's light weight, handle is longer than most, and it has a comfort grip...Really like it.

Luckily in the Detroit area we have always had these guys, you could get the cheapest Chinese to Starrett and SK. Channellock is about the same price as HF.

Wow, those are fantastic prices on Channellock; I pay 3-5 bucks more on most items at Home Depot...which unfortunately is about my only option for Channellock in my area.

Lol, I’ve always had good luck with their zip ties. Gardening gloves I only bought once so I don’t have an opinion either way, honestly.

I’m wanting to throw together a road set and Harbor Freight is #1 on my list to that. It’s cheap enough and you guys say that the quality is that good.

As for the last of the Craftsman USA stuff... that’s when I first started buying tools, (2005-2010) in my early 20’s. I’m coming up on 33 and haven’t broken a Danahar Craftsman socket or wrench yet. Only had to replace one ratchet. They’ve served me well.

Re: "The Harbor Freight Addiction Thread..."

In reality, even though the prices were always dirt cheap, 20 to 30 years ago, the quality of Chinese tools were not "all that".

The quality since then, has improved considerably, which made it a game changer, at least for me. Personally, I wouldn't (and don't) own one Harbor freight tool that I don't believe Will get the job done every time.

I think you miss the point. If I was buying tool storage or air tools 20-30 years ago, Craftsman would have easily been the best quality vs cost value. Not the best, not the worst, but the price that reflected that. Today Craftsman is far from that, but HF is. For those particular hand tools that this also applies, nearly every one of the Taiwan made, known good tools you can get from HF are either as good or better than the last gen of USA made and way better than the current chinese Craftsman today.

To be fair, I don't buy very much from there that does't get a pass here at GJ. So in that capacity we agree.

Kitts is a cool place ! Mostly surplus. There has been a huge bin by the door with bagged stainless fasteners, very cheap, for a couple of years. Big chains. Big ropes. Cheap drill bits, sets and individual, including Silver and Deming.

They used to carry (new) name brand (CP, IR) pneumatic tools. I usually only get there once or twice a year (last time I need some small S hook - 10¢ a piece ! They had several different sizes.) even though I live <10 miles away.

I've tried to like HF, but the ones I've been in must carry different stock than the ones some of the guys here go into, or their expectations are much different than mine. I've bought two of their engine hoists, when I was out of town and needed to load something heavy I found on CL. They've both worked, but both leak oil like crazy. Similarly, I've bought ratchet straps, lifting hardware, etc, but they haven't lasted well. I try to buy lifetime quality stuff, and mostly that's what I own, and the HF stuff has been more in the limited use/disposable category.

I buy nitrile gloves there, to save on shipping costs ordering online. I really looked at the HF44 boxes, but ended up buying Masterforce and SO instead. I'm considering outfitting my garage with HF44's for cabinets, if I don't get stainless ones at Cosco instead at a good sale price. But for tools and for socket organizers and such, I just can't see it. They don't compare to what I already own; the only virtue to them is that they are inexpensive. I've acquired a few HF tools in boxes that I bought used to get stuff I wanted. I haven't ended up keeping any of them; they just weren't worth the space in my boxes for the quality they were. There may be some "sweet spot" tools that HF sells that are a good quality/cost ratio, but I've just not seen them in the times that I've been in. I really looked hard at all their wrench racks and socket organizers a while back when a lot of people recommended them. None were very useful to me, and costs were pretty similar to better ones. Of course, if you use 20% off coupons or parking lot sales, the price would be better.

I can see where their target audience is; someone that doesn't have other tools, wants to get into what he needs inexpensively right now, and doesn't need top quality. I guess I'm just not in that position today. I might have been 40 years ago; at that time I used Sears to meet those needs. Those tools have been discarded and replaced today, I expect if I was doing the same with HF the same pattern would be apparent 30 years from now.

No doubt they are meeting a real niche in the American market, judging by their success. It is good to have a store that has a wide assortment of tools available in one place to shop from. I'd use them to acquire tools I need NOW, if I didn't own them already.

I happened to need a pair of C clamp vise grips so I picked up a pair of the new Bremen ones. They do seem to be pretty well built, and surprisingly my 20% off coupon worked on them, in case anyone was wondering if they were exempt. Even the lady at the register was surprised about that lol.

I have nothing against harbor freight, but I normally only buy USA Made or top quality. But with Irwin making most vise grips in China these days I figured I'd give these a shot. I think they'll hold up well.

Picked up a pair of the Doyle 8in Long-Nose pliers today. $10 with the 20% off coupon. The finish is decent but the sanding edges are a bit sharp. Seem a bit bulky when compared to my older 8in Fuller's. Plan on stopping over to the local box store tomorrow to see how the Kobolt and Channel Lock versions feel.

Used them to wire an outlet and they cut a section of 12/2 house wiring with ease. The crosshatch design in the tips hold the wire easily for forming eyelets for under screws.

So, for the DIY'er these will make work just fine. I feel compelled to get a pair of Channel Locks since these are made in Taiwan... :lol_hitti

Oh no Harbor Freight is now opening a new store in the town nearby me. Now I only have to drive 7 miles one not 25 miles. The worst thing is my wonderful bride of 40 years is totally addicted to the free coupons. Actually I see Harbor Freight filling the niche in the market that once was occupied by Sears Craftsman. You can get total junk in Harbor Freight and some really great product. Especially in the area I live as there is no Sears anymore within 50 miles and most folks here will not step foot into K-mart.

I know the feeling, Sears Hardware moved out of a strip mall five miles away a couple of years ago, then last spring, HF moved into the same strip mall.
