I'm giving this welding cabinet/cart a definite PASS. item#61705
http://www.harborfreight.com/welding-cabinet-61705.html

I started out looking at their usual cart that goes for about $50 but it was too small for my TIG machine. Saw this one sitting next to it and it's in a whole 'nother class. This thing is built like a tank with heavy gauge steel, and the drawers are solid. The paint finish was very nice too. It holds plenty of gear and then some. Rated at 286lb capacity.

It's a lot more expensive than the cheapo bolt-together carts, but not bad considering what you get. After some haggling I was able to use a 20% off coupon to get the price down to $135.

Is it a hit-or-miss affair in terms of the counter people allowing you to use a 20% coupon on this cart? Is it technically among the items not eligible for that coupon?

I have used the 20% off on the other welding cart they sell. The wording is 'tool storage or carts' and 'welders' separated by a comma so as to differentiate them. unless they have updated it from the coupon I read that expired 12/21 they should take it all day every day.

Excellent.

Anyone have any special coupons or know of upcoming sales for this cart? I have some 20% off coupons from Car Craft. The cart currently shows a price of $169 online. I just watched some videos from guys who have gotten them within the last year when they were on sale for something like $129, plus a 25% coupon. I'd love to jump on something like.

Thanks Kin Creed , I'll pick this up soon . I can only imagine how crappy the HF screws are , I had a terrible time with their hardwood flooring nails .

Europe and US use 13 all over. Japanese do not. If you work on Toyotas you will probably never see a 13mm. But I work on Mercedes and US cars and 13mm is my most common wrench.
for real!!
That is dumb skipping the 13.
then they skip the 16 and the 18, both very common.
and a toyota or honda could have a 13 head, if someone had to replace a 8 mm bolt due to being lost or damaged.

get a tin foil made one from sears....................LOL
Like the $100.00 cart I got at christmas, that gives you the free drill.
It is decent only.
the bottom door covering the bottom well is flimsy as all get out.
l am thinking of beefing it up.

are the wire wheels any good. the set for drills.

I'm using the 6 piece set right now. Stripped the paint and rust off of a dynamic vise jaw with the cup and a wheel and they both look like they will last several jobs beyond this vise restoration. The wires are pretty stiff and like to bounce the drill away when you first use them or when you use them at low RPM, but once the bristles get lined up it is smooth. They are pretty aggressive and will leave lots of scratches in metal. The shafts are pretty short. I kept bumping the chuck into things while trying to get into nooks. I would say for $3.50 they are a buy.

I see on the website there is a 1 piece cup with tempered wires. I'm wondering if that would be softer and less aggressive than the 6 piece kit with untempered wires.

Electric corded and air cut off tool - PASS
Electric one works, doesn't have a ton of power but it cut my exhaust without much trouble. The air cut off seems to be okay for $7~, only used it once at low power.

Easy out screw remover - FAIL
Easy out stripped screw remover didn't work at all. Bought the smaller kit from lowes and it worked like a charm.

Question: Can you use a 25% off HF coupon on a shop press?

Yes the 25% off coupon works for the shop press. If in doubt add the item to the shopping cart on the website, then type in the coupon code, if it works you'll know instantly.

Good advise I didn't think about that Thanks!

No problem, my HF is 30 miles away so if there's a coupon I plan to use, I test it to see if it works with the item I want to buy before I drive all the way over to the store then find out the coupon doesn't work.

Pass: The Krause and Becker airless paint sprayer (#60600) seems to work really well. Used mine twice the past year, no complaints, though I did swap out the tip for a Graco tip, as I read online that the original one dumps too much paint. Also of note, it is VERY important to clean it thoroughly to prolong life.

I just picked one up today, and ran about 10 gallons of thompsons water seal through it...I couldn't have sealed my three hundred feet of fence without it.. (600 ft including both sides) Worked like a champ...

Professional 301 Piece Mechanic's Tool Kit

Pittsburgh - item#45951

Got this for my mother for Christmas gift, and used it to fix several items around her house. I am thoroughly impressed and it came with some sizes of Pittsburgh Pro sockets I didnt get when buying the sockets in individual strips. Highly recommend this tool set!

They're great until they start losing bristles and then you'd better be wearing a heavy apron, I've picked out several bristles from my shirt when using them in the drill press when removing rust from tools and metal.

anyone have any luck with the 3/4 in. Drive Click Type Torque Wrench? This one is supposed to go up to 300# which i like the idea of for wheel bearings, but just wondering how much i could really trust it..

http://www.harborfreight.com/3-4-quarter-inch-drive-click-type-torque-wrench-808.html

Used it to torque the bolt on my harmonic balancer, needed to be at 300lbs and I didn't have any luck finding a rental. I paid just under $50 for it when it was on sale using a 20% off a couple years ago and then bought the metric set of sockets to go with it for just under $30 using the same method.

Worth every penny in my opinion.

Can this thread as well as the coupon thread be Pinned to the first page of the forum?

I've got a few of the wires wheels mentioned above, and I have noticed that the wires will start coming out of them after several uses. Although for the price after a few uses they've paid for themselves anyways, I just keep an extra on hand.

They're both two of the most popular threads here. They're almost always on the first two pages. In the meantime you can choose 'subscribe to this thread' under 'thread tools' at top right while viewing the thread.

I'm already sub'd to both this thread as well as the coupon thread, just thought it would be really nice to have them pinned to the top for easier access. I noticed that sometimes I receive an email saying there are new posts only to come over here and find that nothing has been changed and nothing new has been posted. Its the false alarm emails that get old so it would be nice if the threads were on the top. Or start a new sub-section HF related for these threads to more easily track them LOL.

This thread and the coupon thread are very useful not only for me but for many.

Telescoping Car Wash Mop
HFT - item#60587

I must say this thing works great, and really makes washing the roof of my FJ Cruiser much easier, and it gets under the roof rack as well.

The search function of this site is pretty bad. Google will turn up results gj won't.
When i did google it, all i got was the ball joint press kit cheech, so figured I'd throw a mayday on the review thread.

I assume the pitman arm puller is the same as the one they sell separately, which I had for a year or so. It was OK, but I had to baby it through several jobs until it finally broke on me. I then purchased this set back when it was made in USA by KD (mine is relabeled NAPA but has kd part numbers)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000TDCCHW?pc_redir=1405033457&robot_redir=1&tag=viglink20245-20

Since it has become gear wrench and been outsourced, I can't really speak to its quality, however I would personally spend the extra few dollars for it and hope its not the same as the HF.

As much as I like HF, the lifetime warranty policy does not cover the ball joint press (and I assume this kit is the same). These are tools that get abused, and I'd want a lifetime warranty to spend that much money at HF.

Also, the HF pitman arm puller was about 1/4" too narrow to work on a pitman arm from several half ton trucks I tried to use it on.

HF painter's tape. Fail for its intended purpose. Hung some swatches, less than 24 hrs nearly half had fallen down. Different brands, so it didn't unstick just from the same thing. Some unstuck from the wall others the swatch.

It sticks to itself and nearly anything plastic pretty well and sharpie against the blue is great for making misc labels of stuff. Several that I wrapped around cat 6 and RG6 and stuck to itself are still there months or years later.

If you search this thread only, and use the item number in the search bar it will usually net you results. That is why we use the item number when posting a review.

The 500-amp Carbon Pile Load Tester (#91129) - FAIL!!

The same night I bought it, I took it out to do a load test on my wife's truck. Battery is 800+ CCA. As I cranked on the load toward 400 amps, a small-gauge wire on the positive clamp started smoking (insulation melting - overload), then the unit itself started smoking seriously. Something inside, near the vent holes nearest me, was red-hot. Returned it ASAP for refund - didn't want to mess around with the possibility of going through several bad ones to find one that works

The smoke doesn't sound right, but the red hot area is perfectly normal. It has a heating element setup in it for the load test. The load is heating up that heating element believe it or not.

400 amps is about 5000 watts, so something is going to be red hot pretty fast.

Porsche 928 in my avatar picture uses a Group 49 battery that made the pile tester at Sears, something commercial on a cart they use in the Diehard battery test lane smoke. Could just be a cleaning cycle. ;)

I use a modern tester, Solar BA-5, which is the cheaper version of the BA-7 without the peak low voltage hold function during starting.

I bought one to carry in the big truck, for what it's worth it was 30 ft/lb off at 250ft/lb compared to my calibrated central tools.

I have one of these to torque wheel hubs. Seeme to work well...., don't know how accurate it is though!
I have a half inch drive version as well, same story!

I have had that kit for years and it never occurred to me that you weren't supposed to use the handle without the extension. I put it in the handle the first time I used it and have never taken it out since.

Ball Joint Press PASS..., although it didn't have the correct receiver tube for my joint. had to do a little fabricating.
Serpentine belt tool fail...., unless you drill it and screw or weld the two pieces together.
And ball joint separator..., BIG PASS! Great Tool!

I have resisted buying the electric staple gun that shoots pin nails as well. I had a bunch of wood screens to do and I thought saving myself from having to hand staple them by using the HF thing would be a good idea. Not something I expect to do again for a long time so a high quality unit was not necessary. Well, this thing has no quality. Misfires and doesn't drive either staples or pin nails flush in any kind of wood.

FAIL.

pittsburgh snap ring plier set - COMICAL FAIL

I know they are already emntioned but for the 6 bucks I took a gamble and kind of glad I did. I definantly got 6 bucks worth of laughs at the shop about how terrible they are.

They are so soft I think they may be rubber infused metal, that bad that I have no idea how they can make a metal bend that easy.

Pittsburgh 5-ton hydraulic gear puller = HUGE pass

I think these images speak for themselves

I was originally gonna have to cut this drum off, but the gear puller was the only thing to yank it off!

Since then I've used it to swap pulleys on alternators, power steering pumps and harmonic balancers. Pretty neat tool!
