what do you guys think about item #62813 the Deluxe Battery Maintainer and Float Charger? I have the cheaper one but my positive terminal is getting really nasty looking and it's been on a battery about 7 months now but I'm thinking about getting this or the battery tender Jr.

I bought one for a buddy, brought it in to work, and looked at it. After about 10 minutes, he, myself, and 2 other electricians determined it was junk. Upon further investigation, we found numerous write ups and reviews talking about them catching fire and being dangerous. I returned it the next day and have since never purchased anything with electrical or mechanical parts from HF.

That's what I felt when I was reading the reviews a lot of them said they had bad chargers out of the box

I've had lots of problems with Schumacher chargers/tenders so avoid them too. If you do have an issue, customer service is awful. One brand that seems to get good reviews is Battery Tender. I don't own one so I can't comment.

7" Wet tile saw- solid pass. Used it to do a backsplash in the kitchen and it worked great. It didn't seem like it wanted to kill me. Quite the opposite- cut like butter. Might not be the greatest for someone that tiles every day but for a once a year or less usage like me, it's way better than renting a huge one.

Good to know, have a backsplash project coming up!

Would like to see some pictures of your finished project. ;)

Great. Meanwhile I use my HF reciprocating saw nearly every week to cut something up. No issues whatsoever.

I have the xc70 or xc75 charger and the way the Schumacher does charging is a little weird. I would never use it to maintain a battery. I'm just going to try the tender it was cheaper on Amazon but after tax it's about the same as in store

IMO, it's a waste of money.

The cheap ones work fine. Puts out a small 12v charge. Not rocket science.

.

I also have them and they work great. I use them with diesel trucks and my mason dump regularly. I won't lie, I might have a 6 ton Hein Warner tucked under there with them as well... Just in case...

I ended up still getting the battery tender Jr The only reason I did was I never knew when it was charging and floating.. and the cheaper one tended to output around 14.1 V which I think is too strong for 24/7?
I mean my battery is kinda of on the older side I just really need it to last me a few weeks after my rebuild since it's going to see a lot of use when I'm cranking to get the oil pumped in the motor.

I have one, have used it for a few years, works well. The negative reviews seem to be from people who are misinformed. A fellow EE recommended this to me, and I have been very happy with it.

A good battery tender should have fixed leads to mount on the terminals and a plug at the other end to connect to the charger itself. The age of the battery is not helping your situation with the corrosion. The electrolyte levels are probably way off, plus heavy corrosion is a sign of over charging, usually from the alternator. Because the clips from the charger are so corroded, I would have to believe that crappy little unit from HF is overcharging your battery.

Actually, I just read some of the reviews on that 14.1 V charger and this was the first one to pop up - There is nothing "automatic" about this charger, and it violates its own spec (which says maximum output is 13.2 V, when it is actually 14 V). Its output voltage is too high to be considered a continuous float charger, since the battery could be overcharged and, eventually, the electrolyte fluid boiled out leaving it dry and dead. I saw no evidence of it trying to regulate its output voltage to 13.2V using either a real (well-charged) car battery or resistive loads. Others have also mentioned that the voltage is too high to be a float charger and leave on all the time, I agree.

Other reviews stated these don't charge at all and have actually drained the battery so low, they had to buy brand new batteries. A lot of people have had good luck with HF electronics, but other people have had terrible luck. It's 50/50 chance and when you consider some of the consequences for cheaping out on stuff like this, I'd rather spend the extra money on a tried and true brand to receive that peace of mind. The reference above about draining the battery was in regards to two chargers a gentleman purchased for he and his wife's scooters. So $18 for two chargers that drained two $25 batteries, and he was over the 90 day warranty so was stuck with them. In other words, he threw away $70. Heck, even a tender from Harley Davidson is only $40 and I know that works because I've used it thousands of times since buying the bike in 2009.

When you say Battery Tender JR, are you referring to the small one sold at HF or the actual JR. by Deltran? Deltran makes good chargers and that should last. I have at least 4 different older, quality, American made, heavy duty battery tenders and chargers that I've picked up at flea markets over the years. These things are solid metal inside out and never have a problem with them. Some cheap and easy insurance while using your new charger would be to clean the terminals on the battery really well and apply some grease or vaseline to the posts, clamps, exposed wires and even the ends of the charger.

I'm talking about the actual battery tender JR by Deltran that I picked up all I could find is the new "green" chargers now they said the older models are a bit more solid feeling inside.

And yeah I always keep a muti meter with me (klien tools) and I noticed with the HF maintainer it was always around 14.1/2.. when I hooked up the tender Jr. it was flashing green for about 15 min then it went solid green in which that's the level it's at now.. and the voltage now is 13.1 while in the maintain mode.

I wasn't trying to call you out for buying them. LOL :D

BTW, when I said they leaked I meant they leaked in the electronic device they were installed. Cleaning it up is one thing but the acid eats the nickle plating from the contact.

Really impressed, I just bought this and the 20oz hvlp gun, did some spraying last night with the hose. Fittings and crimps are nice quality, hose is very flexible. We'll see how it does for average homegamer use.

A house near mine burned to the ground, started in the garage where a HF battery maintainer was in use.

Re: The Harbor Freight PASS/FAIL Thread... Parts Policy

I've owned a Harbor Freight chipper shredder (Central Machinery Model 95964) for about three years. I had a handle break on the fuel shutoff valve. I figured I could fix it myself, but called HF to find out what the price would be. The owner's manual had a blowup of all the parts and part numbers.

The representative looked it up, and said that they only stocked one part, the axle for the chipper. I was surprised, and pressed why they would not have parts for the engine, at least. The rep explained that they only buy parts for equipment that is still sold in the store. After they stop buying the product for sale, they don't buy any more parts to service it. Once there stock of parts sells out, we're on our own.

They did say that you can try to get parts on Ebay and other sites.

I was really surprised. I could see with something like a hammer or screwdriver, they wouldn't service that. But anything with an engine on it ought to be supported for some period of time after they stop selling them in the store.

I will certainly take this into consideration in the future. It's hard to argue buying something that is engine powered, knowing that you might not be able to get the parts needed to keep it running.

Terry, if the HF engine is a knock-off of a Honda, look on ebay for a Honda fuel valve. They are all over ebay. Cheap, too! And faster than HF can get it to you, even if they had it in stock.

1/2'' Breaker Bar - Yes
6" digital caliper, ok, not great, spoiled by my Mitutoyo at work. But it works in a pinch.
25' premium rubber air hose (3/8) - yes
Torque wrenches, I have 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2" and every time I calibrate at work they are pretty darn accurate to a calibrated standard. No complaints for $10 each. Treat them well and they will treat you well
8 gal, 2HP oil lube compressor - yes

91062 -3 1/4 in 5.5 amp drill master electric planer--pass only have used it to fix a butchered door bottom at the new house.
But I will second and third and whatever the 1/2 breaker bar and torque wrenches all solid pass.

Earthquake 1/2" impact, impact sockets and axle sockets. Pass. The impact could use a little more oomph on big rusty bolts. Otherwise, it gets me by just fine. Looking to move up to an Earthquake XT.

44" top and bottom chest combo. Pass. Have had it for close to 10 years and they have served me well.

Black 26" 4 drawer tool cart. Fail. It's not as robust as above and drawers are too shallow. Will be getting the 30" red one.

Disc pad and caliper service set. Pass. Have used it a number of times and it does the job well.

Inner tie rod tool. Pass. Had to grind one of the bits for some reason to fit Buick. The tool cost less than a set of tie rods so who cares.

Brake line tools (flaring and bending) Fail....total garbage. Spend your money on Lisle.

Drum brake tools...Fail. They just ****. Spend your money on Lisle.

Bearing separators.. Pass

3 jaw pullers...Fail.

Scissors lift transmission jack....Ummm. This is everything but a transmission jack. They should call it a 3rd hand. With the tie down straps, it excels at holding up doors, exhaust or any heavy object you need to prop up and adjust into position for fastening or welding. It has been a Godsend in that respect. As a transmission jack, it fails miserably. get a real transmission jack or a life insurance policy.

Parts washer. Pass. It works.

2 ton engine crane. Pass. Don't use it often but it works.

20 ton hydraulic press. Pass. It had a lot of slop until I shimmed it. Now it works beautifully.

Screwdrivers and Pliers. Fail. I do buy their $6.99 orange handle sets once a year or so for when I need to strike a screwdriver with a hammer. LOL.

1/4" socket sets. Pass. My garage has a black hole that eats 1/4" sockets and I am constantly replacing them. Pittsburg makes it easy on the wallet and they never see more than 30 ft/lbs anyway.

I bought a pair of the 12" bolt cutters, (item #60677). I would rate them a pass. I have been cutting a variety of thicknesses of wire, from "9" wire, down to 16 gauge, and no problem yet. Usually with bolt cutters, you will have trouble with bad ones right off the bat, but these are holding up good.

Bought a couple of these 16 slot wrench racks, (item #62850). I would rate them a pass. The wrenches kinda "snap" into place, and the racks helped to organize my drawer.
