The problem with HF is that some of their stuff is decent, and some of it is horrid. But you never know which is which, till you buy it and try it.

So what if we made a thread where we posted our HF purchases with a PASS or FAIL grade? After awhile we could check this thread and see what's what.

A couple things to keep in mind:
1) If you have to fix it before it works, it's an automatic FAIL.
2) This thread is for identifying quality HF tools, and for warning fellow tool-heads away from low quality HF tools. It's NOT a thread for rejoicing about low cost.
3) Don't review tools until you've used them awhile. Posting self-congratulatory praise immediately after your purchase is not helpful. Use the tool awhile, then post.
4) Please post a product number or photo if possible.

Use the blue "Search This Thread" button above to find what you're looking for.

Another idea for searching this thread:

WARNING: HF changes suppliers frequently. Good reviews on an item from months ago may tell you nothing about newly-sourced items currently found in stores. Look for recent ratings to guide your purchases.

Thread started: 12/27/2008
Another thing to take into account is the poor quality control. Some items have a higher reject rate than others. These items may work well if you get a good one but it is hard to rate an item based on a single purchase. The tractor lift has a high review rating yet when I returned a defective one, the lady said " bad pump"? before I said a word.

1 ton gantry crane - PASS
1 ton beam trolley - PASS

I just upgraded all the gantry crane hardware to US made Grade 8. Used the gantry for the first time last weekend to remove the engine and trans, as one unit, from my Corvette. It was an easy lift using a chain fall and load leveler......pretty much a one person job....just had my 14 year old daughter put a hand on the trans to keep it from making contact with anything. I'm going to use the gantry again in a few weeks to lift the body off the frame.

Nope just a 20% coupon which did not work on the saw or the cabinet so I paid $139 for the saw. Which is probably worth much much less...

I don't have a smart phone so I could not use that either ha ha. What I am hoping is someplace I saw a guy make a upright stand for the maroon Chicago Electric ? model .I am hoping that the same can be done with this Bauer model . I typed in Bauer tools that led me to a place that makes really nice tools so that's not the same Harbor Freight Bauer company I am sure ha ha.
I typed in Bauer tools harbor freight but that just led me to the H.F. site. Soo who the hell is Bauer tools and how awful are they?

Jeff,

Bauer is going to be take place of the older blue "professional" models of the power tools. Don't know where you are located but there is going to be some serious changes with the products at HFT. Feburary you should have noticed your local store changing the planograms for some of these items over the next couple months.

I have been to that coupon ? site before I did not know you were the producer of all this great information wow great job. Now if the above coupon was at that site it could not find it? So what I will do is try to copy and paste this saw coupon and send it to my work computer where I have access to a printer. Then I can print the coupon and take it with my receipt in to the Bangor Maine store for my "$$ Refund $$" .

EDIT, I found the coupon I pasted it into an e-mail and sent it to my work computer thanks

No need to print it out. HF accepts cell phone pics, screenshots, etch-a-sketch, water colors, and artistic descriptions. ;)

Really, all you need is the 8 digit coupon code. Cashier types it in and it either works or doesn't. It just can't be expired or for one of the forbidden things listed on the coupon itself.

Also Polarbear, What is a PLANOGRAM?

A planogram is a store's layout - what items go where on what shelf, etc.

As an example, replacing the Chicago Electric brand portable bandsaw with the Bauer, or changing where power tools are located in the stored.

Well yes and no,....Yes I got ya on the store layout .
No not in great bustling metropolis of Bangor Maine. You cannot give them the item coupon code by itself tried it I was arrested and flogged in isle 3. I wrote down the coupon code to something last summer and she looked at me like I had 10 heads.
We accept coupons, and smart phone screens showing the coupons and sometimes printed by printer coupons if we feel like it, basically but no ,.... you will not come in here with just a scrap of paper with a number on it ,...no no no!

The store in my area accepts the codes written on paper. Never had a problem.

I just read them the code off my phone. I also have a 20 percent off coupon with no limitations printed in fine print. It expire 1 August 2017. I just took a photo of it and keep it on my smartphone. It can be used over and over again, and on anything. But I only use it occasionally. There are lots of different 20 percent coupons and lots of freebie coupons I use as well. With a store only a mile away, I'm there regularly...

Unlike most of their 20 percent coupons, this one has no exclusions. I haven't tried to purchase a tool box with it, but it says "any single item" with no exclusions in fine print. It's worth a try...

There are always exclusions, regardless if they are printed on the coupon or not. Also, the coupon does not state that there are no exclusions; regardless, it does not work on the generally excluded items (i.e. toolboxes).

Might just be the pair my coworker got but the tongue and groove pliers he has are junk. They open up as soon as you start to use them.

Guys, I cannot reccommend the free multimeter, after 8+ years of limited use, the 9v battery needed to be replaced. I'd get a refund if I paid anything for it.

The sad thing is I really wouldn't be surprised if someone complained about that.

As a DIYer for automotive/motorcycle stuff the 3/8 and 1/4 flex head ratchets are a major pass for me. They have a pretty slim profile as well that has gotten me into some tight spots on my Audi.

I was upset that I had to plug the HF table saw into the wall socket. I feel that with the $104 I spent buying the tool I shouldn't have to foot the electricity bill too!

Hf 1x5 combo belt disc sander 69033 gets a big fail from me. I really hate to do it but it is just sad that hf did this to a great unit. The belt part is fine on my unit. But the disc unit is a disaster. The disc is unbalanced causing the unit to vibrate so much it walks off the table. I tried balancing it but gave up after hours of messing with it. My hf gave me a new disc but it was also unbalanced. This one I was able to balance it close enough that its acceptable. But both discs wobble. No matter what I do I cannot get rid of the wobble. I will try to get rid of some of it by using a lathe bit. So get the 1x30 unit only and save some bucks. If you need a disc, get a seperate unit. Anything that runs should be tested at the store if at all possible.
