Thanks 1/2 cup. I have been catching up on your garage saga. It has inspired me anew to be better about posting and getting involved in the board again. Thanks for your fine work.

I got a little time at lunch today to fiddle with my latest addition the the bench again a bunch of scraps but a hopefully useful idea was born of them. I will post pictures tomorrow.

Jeremy: your welding table looks like it has a lot of nice features on it. just curious what the plan is for making is stay in place because it looks like your casters don't have any stops? do tell what your plan is?

very creative way to turn the table upright.

So there is a FAMOUS garage journal member? do tell who has that little Hory cart we found a couple years ago??

I bet a nice Holland's vise will look great on top of that welding table or are you planning on making maybe a hitch receiver type stand for it so you can have it or remove it when it's not needed?

your garage dog looks like he's getting bigger and hope he's keeping your boys happy and busy.

cheers

Drives there are many people on these threads I consider garage journal famous. A few of which I have had the pleasure of meeting. This member was Gregor of mid century Moto Mecca fame.

As for making it stay in place I plan to make a wall dock using some plywood and potentially some toggle clamps and inset nuts.

Here is the start of it.

The plywood is going to be screwed to the wall studs so I can dock the bench when needed.

I have also gathered up some parts for a dual swivel welding platform. The hex head bolts will be replaced with adjustable lock knobs once they come in.

There are the parts for my vise receiver attachment as well as extra tube for optional add ons. I'll update them more once they are attached.

Jeremy, nice table! Though this appears to mean the sweet Craftsman tool chest conversion is no more?

Also is there any concern to having your bottle at an angle? I know having them horizontal is a no no, but I'm not sure where the tipping point is (see what I did there?)

Edit: just realizing I have Google at my finger tips, apparently the only bottle that is a concern is Acetylene, and even it can be stored 35* from horizontal.

TODD: Thank for your comment. Yes I don't have the set up on the craftsman cabinet anymore but I still have the craftsman box and for now am keeping it. As for the bottle angle I am getting conflicting reports on it being an issue. I am hopeful that it isn't too steep an angle for the gas/liquid phase change to be an issue but use will tell. I will keep you all posted. I was trying to make the bench compact and keep the bottle protected as I share my shop space with my wife and 3 young boys so I am trying to avoid missiles.

Jeremy: what are those punches called that you have sitting on your welding bench? are they to center a hole? do they make them up to 3/4 inch? I've always wanted something like that when drilling holes and didn't know who makes them or where to find them. i'm guessing yours are old or can you buy a new set if I can't find an older one?

I was wondering about that tank too, but you know more about welding than I so didn't mention it.

Drives: They are called transfer punches. The set I have are some cheapies I think from harbor Fright that I got a garage sale. They sell them lots of places. My set only goes up to 1/2" but they can be found up to 2" in diameter here on mcmaster carr. Or here on harry Epstein. Both of these sets are sure to be high quality.

I haven't gotten a chance to work on the table again yet. But I did work in the shop and finish up a little project for my wife.

Here are the Walnut knife blocks I made her. They are finished using Tung Oil only.

Cheers,

Jeremy: thanks for the 411 on the punches and i'll keep my eye open for some. I could use a set up to 3/4 or an inch if you happen to see any.

WELL DONE on the magnetic knife holders. looks great and your picture taking skills are almost as good too.

Guys sorry for not posting this earlier. I got a chance to use the welding table a little and can report with a 1/2-5/8 full bottle the angle was no issue.

My boys took a trip to the toy store with a little money they had saved up. My middle son had the least money but a good imagination. All he could afford was a megaton Pez dispenser. But he had an idea for a body for it. So he and I got to work and came up with this.

I have a few more projects coming up and my FIL is in town helping with some big remodels so might do some reporting on that as well.

Bathroom remodel

Hey all,
I have been using the garage to work on for items for the 1/2 bath remodel. My wife and I both really like a found re purposed industrial art and decorating style so I thought I would try and make something out of what I could find at my local salvage store. So I took this pile of old pipes and fittings...

mixed in some lamp bases. Held in place with some standard 1/8" IPS tubes

After that is was a matter of fishing wires and repeating.

Once that was all done I mounted it all to a old piece of barn board and put it on the wall.

The Mirror is also re purposed from barn boards and items from the salvage store. If I leave out the bulbs which I would have to buy for any fixture I only spend $45 on the fixture and mirror combined.

Jeremy: very nice work. you have an inner kid in you that is for certain with the PEZ holder. Heckuva an idea for a light fixture.

not that you need any more help ORGANIZING, but did you see I finally started my garage gallery thread I've been talking about for a while? also just in case you haven't read it yet i'm asking for before, during and after pictures of garages and shops with comments from other members so it will become a thread where we can all look for ideas that WORK and get us and keep us ORGANIZED.

WELL DONE with the bath light, mirror and Pez holder. so happy wife and kids your live must be GOOD. yes??

cheers

Very cool light, not bad for $45 for everything, just a fixture would have been nearly that much for a low buck boring model.

OK as promised here are the pictures of the Hollands 424-1/2 I am working on right now. I got it in trade from Drivesitfar a few months ago now. It will end up on my welding bench once it is complete.

It had been refinished by the PO (before Drives) but he couldn't get the swivel base off (rust) so I had to attach it with a brass hammer and some PB blaster but I got it free. You can see why it didn't want to move.

I will most likely have to re-machine both of these surfaces to properly redo the vise.

There is nothing better to fix a vise than a bigger vise.

Since the vise was missing its swivel lock handle I set to work on making a new one.

I hope to make the knobs today and get that part finished. Its a fun lunch break project.

I have been working hard on my usual 5 projects at once and finally feel I can give an update worth something on a few of them. My Hollands 424-1/2 is coming along nicely with an new pivot lock handle and a sub base for mounting it on a receiver hitch. Here are a few pictures of the progress.

I also got to try my hand at plasma cutting for the first time since college.

As you can see above it started pretty rough.

But I got a little better towards the end.

I had to break out the grinder to clean it up but am happy with the results.

Also I have been working on some more lighting ideas for the house using salvaged pipe and old glass wire insulators.

I hope to get a few of these done this weekend and I will post the completed lights once I have them.

Cheers and have a good weekend all. Especially those who are already having a Saturday.

Thanks for the kind words all.

1/2 cup I could use your help this weekend. I am installing a new ceiling hung fixture in the master bed room including running the wires and mounting all the boxes. Could use your help for sure. I'll post a few pictures assuming I remember to take them.

Have a great weekend all and enjoy the holiday if it is celebrated where you live.

Read the entire thread over a couple days. Especially like the wood tops, decking work, and light fixtures. My daughter is at University of Portland so I can really relate to the weather comments you have in some of your posts.

Lieutenant: thanks for checking in. The bench tops seem to be a favorite of many myself included.

Speaking of the benchtops, I just took a few hours today (with the gracious support of my wife) and cleaned the shop out and even had the benches cleared for about 15 minutes. I then cluttered them up with lamp and light parts and made a few wall scones. Here is how they turned out.

I tossed a couple of bulbs in and hooked it up to a lamp cord I mocked up with alligator clips. This is what they will look like lighted.

b2e3d4017d874238f73d4b5947efde95.jpg

I need to cut a few nice circles out of maple or walnut to mount them to the wall on and then they will be D-U-N done.

Thanks for checking in as always and happy Memorial Day to all. I hope you are all healthy happy and with family today.

1/2 Cup Thanks for your kind words as always. I can't keep up with your pace but I hope to get my 3 boy more involved soon and have more time in the shop as a result. Also I hope to be able to show shots of the lights mounted soon.

Jeremy thank you:thumbup:

Getting your boys involved with what you do can be a fantastic experience for all and they take away some valuable life skills with them.

Looking forward to seeing your lights up and running.

I got the first 2 sconces on the wall. I already have open orders for 3 more for my house and 4 more for my mother-in-law.

I'm pretty happy with how they turned out. I am not at all thrilled with whoever did the wiring for the sconces I am replacing. I would have hung another one if I hadn't needed to repair the wall behind it. Whoever hung the sconce thought rather than pulling the wiring back in the box (a shallow one) it would be easier to just punch a hole in the wall and bury the wires there since the old sconce was so big it would hide it:shocking::mad:. So I had to patch the wall first. Once that is all finished I hang the last on in my master bedroom and move on to the others.

1/2 Cup and Rodder. Thanks for your kind words. I should point out an item of interest if you do want to steal the idea. The hole pattern of 1" wall flanges from the black iron pipe exactly matches a standard electrical box so it greatly simplifies installation.

Jeremy: pretty clever. love the MADE IN USA showing on the new lights.

how's BIG RED coming along?

you have skills and i'm guessing after you make all the lights for the family that they want you could probably easily sell a few thousand of those lights.

WELL DONE SIR!!

Drives: thanks very much for your comment. I can't say it is a completely original idea but it wasn't total thievery either. I have open orders for 6 more sconces and 2 chandeliers using these same ideas. I'll post pictures as I complete them.
As for big red it is ready to be used (pending assembly and me welding the receiver on my welding bench.

Guys. I did the needed wall repairs and hung the final wall sconce about a week ago.

It's to the far right in this shot.

b044f35d62e196a184346be4d7124996.jpg

My mother-in-law liked the scones and lights so much she asked for a set of 4 and a chandelier for her home. I will be starting on those soon.

My wife wanted a new table lamp for or family room so I came up with this little guy.

f5203d0e75539cbbd941fe884b559bee.jpg

e3c68eabd39111da6fe1d33021c4866a.jpg

And then this one jumped into my head when I was at the salvage shop and saw the fender light.

e7dfd5577f2f68cec300f3eaa0a575a4.jpg
It doesn't have a home yet but I like it so maybe I'll hang onto it.

The neck is a microphone stand that I converted and the wiring is new but the rest is from the salvage shop.

A friend from work liked the lights and asked for me to create something for her so I came up with this.

2b900a015051cc7365804bcfbce41517.jpg

I have 3 standing orders for more of these. I am starting to think this might be a side business.

Hope you all like them. It is super fun to make them.

They are very nice indeed, I particularly like the lizard and the light saber man. I could see a business forming from this and don't think you'd have a shortage of customers. What do you use to transition from the pipe to the light socket and also to the insulators?

Jbmatth: thanks for the kind words. If I get around to forming a shop of some kind I'll let you guys know. As for the transitions. Lamps are based on the old gas piping standards for old gas lamps. So all the threads are IPS threads most lamp sockets are threaded for 1/8"-27 IPS. This thread exactly matches 1/8"-27 NPT minus the taper so the two thread together. So all I have to do is make a custom fitting going from my pipe to the 1/8-27 IPS threads. As for the insulators I core drill them with a diamond bit and use pipe ******* to hold it all together. It's the hardest part of the lamps but it was a fun puzzle to solve.

Tuamac: thanks as always for following along and adding your kind words. You are correct a little side money to support the habit is always a big bonus.
