Alrighty folks...

I finally get to build myself a little space, and give the wife and kids back the house!

It'll be a modest little space... 26' x 36' with a side gable 16'x9' garage door, service door on that side, and a little window.

I spec'd it out with a split-truss design, so 24' for Scissor truss to give my work space a higher ceiling area, and a 12' Attic truss area over the shop space area so that we could have a little extra storage.

Originally.. I'm a SoCal guy, so when we moved out to New Hampshire (Lee/Durham area in case you know it...) we looked at a few properties that had a barn or second garage. When we finally settled on an area to buy we figured that if it didn't have something we could at least build.

We bought a nice looking Colonial on 4 acres.... with conservation land that used to be an old sand pit (now a nice little valley) and an farm on the other side which is probably 1/2 mile away.

We cleared a little more land to expand the backyard for the kids, and staked out the spot for The Shop.

We started foundation work last week, so I'm pretty amp'd up to see it coming together. :shocking:

I'll post some progress pics as we go.... and thanks for everyone for all the great insight, advice, and good community that we have here on the GarageJournal!

If the foundation is started, where's the pictures ? We love pictures.

In the garage bay, I'd place the middle lights so the are not over the vehicle, move them "down" a bit. This will light up the side of the vehicle better when doing stuff like brake work or interior work.

One other consideration, how tall is your compressor ? Would it fit under the stairs ? It'll take more plumbing for the air line and wiring but it'll save floor space.

Another displaced SoCa hot rodder. Welcome to the Garage Journal Garage Gallery. That is "Gallery" in the sense of "photo gallery."

For historical purposes, any project that looks as good on paper as yours does, must be extensively documented with pictures and detailed descriptions of the work. It is some sort of rule we have here. :)

Just me but I think I would frame in a compressor, closet in the corner where you have the workbench. Build,it like a water heater closet with a door to,the outside and insulate it for sound. Put vents in the door

Other than that just make a little bump out on the side or back of the, building

Sorry, took me a minute to get pictures organized...

Starting from the top, here the backyard land clearing from the start:

NH forest before:

After Clearing:

Note: the sheds there are the old "little" one on the right, and a larger 10'x12' that I finished a few days after those shots. Old one is now gone... finished product after Hydroseed:

Looks like the place took some work to get reasdy.

It is/was a nice piece of property, but I don't think the previous owners were outdoor people. They had been in the house since new (10 years) and just let the backyard creep in until the grass yard was only a few feet.

Amazing what the guy did with a skidsteer and some skill.... all in one day!

Reinforcement on the forms, looks like round steel ties to keep from spreading.

Wow, what a beautiful landscape setting with the countryside behind the garage. Some great renderings of it too. Did you do those and if so what program(s) did you use. Look forward to following your build, thanks for posting.

The renderings were done by a landscape architect.... mostly to give the wife an idea of what I was thinking about. It started out as a fairly square building, then I took that image and modified in Microsoft Paint. I just added details, the hip on the roof, moved the window on the front, windows on the doors.

Thanks all... Although not as big as some of the beautiful garages I've seen in here, I have to admit to being pretty stoked on it coming together.

Okay guys.... sorry for the long gap in updates! I find myself... a little bit like a artist maybe... not wanting to show anyone until the work of art until it finished. Although not totoall done, we've made some great progress and I'm pretty happy with the finished product and so wanted to share!

:rocker:

I just picked up the Modine heater this morning, so have that to install, some final building electrical wiring, and a big of exterior finished to bring the grade up around the side and landscape.

Here goes...

I'm a pretty happy guy, and need to thank my hot wife for her support in helping a guy get his dream shop built! Pretty cool lady.

Has a real "New Englandish" look. I like it. Does your 26" wide loft rely solely on the wood joists or is there some steel in there as well?

Thanks...

The Attic/Loft space is done with the Attic Truss' only. One of the down sides to a finished basement and attic is that you end up with a little less storage space.

It really is mostly for some light extra storage... seasonal Christmas, Camping gear, etc. When I have 4 spare engines up there I may need to throw a header and pole under it!
