Growing up we had the ubiquitous marks on the wall for my brothers and me, showing how tall we were at each birthday. Kind of died a little bit when we sold the family home knowing the new owners would be painting over those marks. So, I thought why not make the marks portable?

Like all my great ideas, a quick google search showed someone else already thought of this and is selling them on Etsy. Didn’t stop me though. Picture below is my prototype I’m cutting in pine. It starts at 10-1/2 inches because:

1. It needs to clear the baseboard at my son’s house.

2. My granddaughter (turns 1 in about 6 more weeks) was exactly that length when she was born at 6 months (1 pound 3 oz).

The real one is going to be cut in oak. I’ll attach pictures to this thread when it’s completed.

Nice idea to make them portable - I recall some kid's marks at our place growing up. And, I once worked in a building that had marks for the Company Founder and his execs under glass on a pillar ..

We moved ours from the wall closet to a 2x4 the last time we moved. Only thing missing was we started having the kids write their own names when they got old enough. I took a picture of the wall with the phone. The plane is to eventually make a nice board and use the laser to reburn the names onto the new board.

At my current project rate, that will probably be after the last one leaves for college.

My son has the official height chart at his house. If they ever move (they won’t) he would cut the board out and replace it.

At my house we started the height chart during Covid, where the Mrs. And I held virtual school for the grandsons. Since the littlest and I were downstairs in my “office” located inside a closet, we did kindergarten stuff down there. One lesson included a height chart so we just put in inside the door since they are open to access the shelf that is the office. We also learned how to photo copy your hand. Visiting cousins have expanded the collection and they enjoy seeing how much their hands have grown over the years.

Got it off the router. 8 tiles to cut all this. Again, this is just trying it in pine before I cut the real one. Cut in a logo at 6’ 2-1/2. Guess how tall Grandad is?

I have the one we bought for my girls 30+ years ago. Neither of them want it yet. The first grandson was a no, but now that there is a granddaughter….. else it’s going away.
