I found what looks to be most of a small British toolset, probably designed to be carried around in a car’s trunk, at a Berkeley estate sale yesterday. The remaining tools look unused. The screwdrivers are British Stanleys and the adjustable is a 6” King ****. I have two other King **** wrenches given to me during a visit from humber2.

That's a cool find, Don! And those empty slots are just begging to be filled now!

It seems unlikely that I’m going to complete that set soon unless I book a flight to the old country. Here are more pictures of the tools in the set. The rest of the wrenches are Bedford Vanadium and the tire pressure gauge is Dunlop (not Dunlap)

Are you able to guess what the sizes of the missing DOE Bedford Vanadium wrench are?
Apart from that it looks like you would need a stubby Stanley screwdriver and some English pliers. The pliers of the era of those tools could likely be Elliot Lucas, what length is the hole for them?

I don't recognise this tool kit, and wonder what vehicle it was from.

The lack of a spot for a spark plug wrench has me thinking not automotive.

Pliers should be 5" , could be King ****, Wilkinson, Elmoto, Elliot-Lucas to name a few.

Missing top right could we'll be a stubby screwdriver.

A list of the wrench sizes could help deduce the size for the lower slot.

Yes.
Not immediately likely, but is there any chance the tool missing from the top right could be the spark plug wrench? It would have to be one of those box spanner ones with a tommy bar tucked inside it?
What size is the slot top right? I could see if a Stanley screwdriver would fit it, or any of several spark plug box wrenches.

I would be happy not to have to list it on eBay but I’m afraid that the only way to establish it’s value is selling it as an auction. :headscrat

Have you seen the www.flyingspares.com site, Don? It's like a G503.com for 1965 to 1980 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow I and II. They have all kinds of parts and accessories for sale, including the toolkits, a Raised Lid and a Flat Lid variety. Yours looks like what they call a Flat Lid, part number UR20812U. They have one for sale for 302 GBP, which is roughly the same in USD $ right now. Link here. They have a Raised Lid for about the same price. So that seller on eBay is high at $490, but not so high as we might have thought. With $300 as a pricing model for a complete set, you can reduce accordingly from there I think for the couple missing pieces and do very well for yourself and fairly for someone else.

Thanks, Lugz. I think mine would be a raised lid with spare bulbs located in the lid, only I don’t actually have a lid. Tin, I’m afraid that your VW set was way more valuable than this will turn out to be. Still, it was a pleasant surprise.

Don,
Surely a complete set is easier to sell than a partial one.
Apart from the items I have there are several correct pliers on eBay uk right now, they seem quite reasonably priced and not uncommon, and there is a tyre tread depth gauge made by Dunlop which would be a nice match for the pressure gauge in your set.
Pliers link:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-...iott-Lucas-Cannock-England-6-1-4/254033287559

or these pliers are cheaper but not named:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ELLIOTT-...LAND-UNUSED-CLASSIC-CAR-TOOL-KIT/264076220954

here's the link to the tread gauge:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DUNLOP-TYER-TREAD-DEPTH-GAUGE-G-30A-MADE-IN-THE-UK/163444068462

Send me a PM if you would like the ones I have, or want me to help with sourcing the parts in the UK if you would like them to complete your set.

I certainly appreciate the offer and all of the information and I definitely like to complete sets but this one is going to be a fast flip. It is just not something I want to spend a lot of time on.

I found this King **** combo wrench at a sale today. I’ll keep it with my other two wrenches I received from humber2 when he visited from New Zealand.

Until today I've never found any King **** tools in the wild that weren't wrenches (DBE's, linked here).

Found this motorcycle chain tool at the flea this morning. Unfortunately, someone snot-welded that handle on, which is not original.

I’ve seen a few of those. The original handle was a hexagonal thing, turned round at either end. Looked something like a punch.

Strangely, I’ve seen quite a few with handles like yours, which often seem to be similar, and all with equally crappy welds!

I can’t now remember if the original handle was detachable. If so, I could easily see them going missing.

My chain tool of that type is branded "The Coventry". The handle is neatly fixed, probably brazed. The press pin is replaceable and a spare one is screwed into the right side (in the photo) opposite the handle. I feel that it predates the King **** ones but I maybe wrong.Coventry1R.jpg

My batting average is not much better, dreamer. In 15 years, I have found a set of double offset DBEs, a pair of pliers, a bike wrench, and that bike chain rivet extractor from last week. But the pace is picking up! :) I just found this teeny tiny DBE wrench (or more aptly put, "ring spanner"!) at the flea this morning.

I wonder if your chain link removal tool was possibly made by The Coventry Chain Co."? This Co. became part of Renold Chains U.K., I have a Reynolds Chain tool almost identical to your's that I purchased in the 1970's. These are still available :-
https://shop.renold.com/products/chain-pin-extractor

If anyone is interested in the history of chain making (1864 - to date) and the technical innovations/improvements introduced by Renold Chains, might I recommend the following, (I found it very interesting :geek:)

I have two of the aluminium ratchets, but mine are 9/32" drive UK military surplus. I have passed on a few more.

Also pictured are a King **** 9/32" to 1/4" adaptor and a faintly stamped King **** 9/32" extension in wartime finish.

King **** also made aluminium handled ratchets in larger drive sizes.

I have seen King 1/2 drive aluminium ratchets but never bothered to buy one.

I've got one of the 3/4" in aluminium - it's an amazing object. I _love_ the traditional adjustable wrenches and I've used them as a tap wrench for several years. I regularly use my 1940s milsurp one and also a mini one for all kinds of tasks...

Tools that last several lifetimes! :)
