Hello again! I got back to that job today armed with a re-purposed hose clamp and popped all the drawers out of the cabinet. I threw them on the truck (junk tools still in them)! Then I loaded the box onto my tailgate and headed home. Now all of us know how long some of these projects can take but I told myself I have exactly 1 weekend to get this box in service again so here goes!

I popped all the drawer slides out of the box cleaned all the loose junk out of the cabinet and began evaluating the condition. This box was either crashed or heavily overloaded since the casters were bent and the bottom of the box was caved in a bit. I straightened out the casters and the floor of the box, then I made some stiffener plates to make the bottom of the box stronger. Once I got it back onto its wheels, I began going at it with a stripper wheel. Then I cleaned it good with wax and grease remover, then I hit the whole thing with the DA with a 80 grit disc. Since this is also a S.O. S. project (stuff on site)project, the nearly full quart of Rustoleum Sunrise Red gloss was chosen (it's actually very close to S.O. red).
Tomorrow, the plan is to get the slides cleaned up, lubed and back into the cabinet, then attack the drawers. The sides of the drawers are good for the most part, the inside bottoms are bad. The plan is to clean everything, paint the faces of the drawers and use some HF drawer liner or some laminate flooring underlayment as a drawer liner. Remember, the fun part is doing this with whatever I have on site!

Here's the pics from tonight:

Looks good! I have the same boxes. I bought them both used from my SO dealer many years ago. I gave the roller box to my wife, after purchasing a nice Proto workstation. The side box is on another older SO box. I didn't get near the deal you did. Get the pics coming.

I must add............You ****!

Update:

I worked on the box some more today. The worst thing seems to be the interior of the drawers. I spent a lot of time at the blast cabinet today and I stilll have 2 drawers to go. I sorta had a production line type of thing going... some parts in bare metal, some in primer, some with wet paint and some back into the cabinet and loaded. A few more pics:

That box looks exactly like one of my older boxes. I bought it new back around early 197? Still work great...can't beat a snap on box.

It's Sunday night and I'm still working on the thing! A slight paint problem...The Rustoleum took forever to dry and since I foam rolled it, I thought it wouldn't look as "peely" as is does. So, back to square one... I block sanded everything with 180 toll it was smooth again and then laid a few coats of Krylon "Pimento" satin on it. It's not quite as red as the Sunrise red and the satin gives it a softer gloss which is perfect because I didn't try to work every last little ding out of the box. Nothing I left is any bigger than the type of dimples you see from the original spot welds so it's still pretty nice but as someone already posted, "it's a tool box, not a collector car". I'm going to put the chrome door edge mouldings on the drawer pulls, I rescued the original aluminum ones but I think I could really mess up my paint trying to re-install them. I'm pretty happy with the color but it is a little more orange than the original but the Sunrise was a little too red. The satin finish really makes the box look new without amplifying any of the flaws. Painting the box with it all together and full of tools was sort of a pain but less work than emptying it all out agian. I will have to check for overspray on the tools (like you would really notice it on my tools)
It looks like this will work out well space wise because this box has 2 more drawers than my old C'man roller plus I have the side cabinet yet to install. I may actually get the paint on the side box tonight too. It had some dings on the side and the door so I worked them out and hit them with a little bondo, The box is in primer and the door needs to be feathered and primed before final paint.
Thankfully Krylon dries really fast so I can keep working. I have a tendency to lay the paint in really wet, like I was painting a fender or something but I have to keep telling myself to keep it light, the material is thin and the finish is a soft gloss anyway.

I got the box in place tonight. Tomorrow I get the chrome for the drawer pulls. The boxes on top seemed a lot heavier than the last time I needed to move them. The top box was a killer, I got it down off the old stack OK but I had gravity on my side. Lifting a box full of tools 5 feet back up wasn't quite as easy....

It's Monday night, I got the chrome for the drawer pulls and put it on. It looks good. I'm working on the side cabinet also and thinking about how I can add some more bins or something to the side cabinet and possible get rid of the 2 drawer Husky cabinet in the stack. Otherwise I am going to need to build a step to get to my sockets!

Ok, it's 2 AM eastern time now and although I needed to finish this tool box refinish project by last Sunday night so that it wouldn't end up as one more "gonna get to it project", It IS done! I got the side cabinet painted tonight and I'm pretty sure I can lose one of the intermediate boxes (2 drawer) to get the height of my stack back down to something I won't have to climb on. My brother gets the old C'man roller and the Husky 2 drawer. He already has the original top cabinet from this set. Thanks for watching!

Hi Tcianci,

shure about giving away the C':headscratman and the Husky drawers?
Looking at the average tool accumulation rates of a GJ nut, you might need the again soon.
Maybe not stacked, but on your bench for the sake of reachability.:headscrat

Lucky catch, definitely deserved through a fast and efficient refurbishing job:thumbup:

I did think of holding on to the other boxes but, a few years ago I realized something and coined a phrase..."The most valuable thing you have is the space you're storing it in."

Sure, it's all great to have stuff and more stuff but it took me 32 years to get that box maxed out and my rate of accumulating tools is slowing, not picking up. My garage rehab is over 10 years old now, stuff has accumulated and I'm in the get-rid-of-it mode. Right now the garage has become a catch all for home projects, work projects and misc. junk. In the intrest of truly enjoying my garage, stuff's gotta go. The place is pretty cluttered and I can't stand clutter, it defeats the purpose of having a finished garage where I can take a break from everything else that wears a body down over the course of the day.

I never thought I'd see this thread back again! Well it's been a few months since I first finished the "resto" and I'm all settled in with the new tool arrangements. Stuff is easy to find and the Krylon "Pimento" doesn't look so orange to me any more. The paint seems to be pretty rugged too. I recently scored the side shelf unit that went to this box but I need to blast and re-finish it. In the meantime I have hanging off the left side of the box. I will post some pictures of it and the pull out bin I made to hold all my clamps. The bin is in the side cabinet.

Well, it's only been about 4 months so I thought I'd finally post the picture of the extra drawer I made for my clamps. Again, it's a S.O.S. (stuff on site) project, so It's made from some MDF and some old drawer slides I scooped out of a vanity.

Oh yeah, I promised a pic of the side shelf. I don't know if this is a SO accessory or not but I'm going to clean it up and repaint it. Here's the pic:

On a side note, the relative I was visiting in the hospital when I started this project was my aunt, my moms sister who lived with my mom. Unfortunately, she passed away in May. As a kid we lived on the first floor of a 2 family house, my aunt and grandparents lived on the 2nd floor. This lady was like a 2nd mom to me and since she never married, she always considered me and my 2 brothers as her kids. This was a pretty sad time for our family. Also I mentioned that my MIL took ill about the same time. Thankfully she had a pacemaker implanted and is doing well.
