A little story about how I got to this point in life.

I met a great girl, her dad had a very unusual hobby. I married that great girl, and obviously took a shining to the hobby my new father in law had. Things were great. That hobby took us all over the Delmarva area, meeting some interesting people, spending alot of weekends outdoors with like minded people, generally having a really good time.

After several years of happy marriage, the talk of kids entered the conversation. We would end up having to take a different path than most people, but eventually we became parents of two great kids.

As with most people, life seemed to get in the way of partaking in the hobby we both enjoyed, preventing us from doing it much, and eventually, at all.

Most people would have sold the stuff and moved on with life. We never planned on giving up the hobby, just took some 'time off'. Sooooo, we needed a place to store our 'stuff'. It took a lot longer than I wanted, but now we have the place.

And the main reason for the building

The building is just what you see, there's no electric out there yet, only have insulation on the roof, and there's no driveway to it. I'm in the process of getting power to it, then I'll wire it the rest of the way. Lots of stuff to do, but progress will be slow. I also have a couple of trucks and a motorbike to keep in there as well.

I will be picking the collective brain here for suggestions as I go.

Great looking shop, bud! Can't wait to see some cannons come out of there.

Did you frame it out yourself or hire a crew? Planning on doing some finish work?

I guess if you are going to have an unusual hobby, you got a good one. Lol!!!

What did you coat the bottom of your post with? A sealer made specifically for that purpose or just something like tar?

Thanks for the compliments everyone. I'm really glad it's up.

MSRTom - I had someone build it, it would've taken me waaaaaayyyyyy to long to do. It will eventually be fully insulated, and have something other than drywall up for the walls, haven't made up my mind exactly what yet. I don't have plans to build cannons in the space, but you never know.

Red Leader & tinbender 66 - Thanks, I love it also. The smiles it brings to grownups and kids alike is great. The grown up kids smile more when it makes it's noise. :bounce:

Kevin54 - It's an unusual hobby in Delaware where I live, but in MD and VA, there are a bunch more of us civil war re-enactors, for obvious reasons.
The stuff wrapped around the bottom of the posts is called a post saver boot. I liked it better than the plastic slip over post protector because this is stuck to the post, not just slipped over, preventing any moisture from seeping into the post from above if/when water gets inside the barn. We'll see if my logic is sound in 15 or so years.

westray & jktruck150 - the building is 48x32x10. I wanted more 'cause I'm worried it'll be too full when everything is in it, especially the lower level, but she didn't want the whole back yard a pole barn. :headscrat  Right now it's fine, but I haven't really moved in yet.

flybefree - you gotta give some details, that's too much of a tease.

I guess I should give some info on the gun. It's a replica of an 1845 Ames 6 lb smoothbore cannon. The Ames smoothbore was a very common piece used in the Mexican-American war, and was still common when the civil war broke out. We portray a Georgia unit, Reeds Battery, or Pulaski Battery. (Names usually changed with the commander). The gun is cast iron, but has been modified with a steel sleeve in the bore for strength. This now prevents it from being able to fire the cannon ball it would've originally, but soda cans fit nicely. ;)

OK...I am actually making a 40% scale 75MM Pack Howitzer T-Shirt Canon for my kids...prime mover will be a pedal tractor. Not nearly as cool, but perhaps more age appropriate for my boys. We love canons, what's not to love really?

That's cool! I agree, much more age appropriate, my kids love to look at the cannon, but don't want to do too much with it. My son complains it's too loud. (We have set off car alarms).

I see a science project for my kids. Do you mind if I take your idea?

Very nice looking barn. The wife and I go to re-enactments when we can. Would you mind posting some of the ones you will be participating in? We might be able to hit up a couple.

Excellent post! You aren't kidding when you say there's a lot of re-enactors here in the heart of it. Ever been down to Tredegar Iron Works along the James River in Richmond? Pretty neat place since they made so many of the artillery pieces during the Civil War.

Looking forward to seeing more.

Nice garage. Great hobby:thumbup: Any pics of the stuff your going to store in there?

The main tenant of the barn

The wife's daily driver and weekend workhorse

My sanity rejuvinator

And our vacation wagon and my other driver

As of now the cannon and the motorcycle are the only thing that have permanent residence. Not too much has changed inside. I've been fighting with the builder about pieces of my floor coming apart. They're not big pieces, just don't expect it on a now 3 month old floor. Right now I'm not getting any satisfaction. Luckily the fix is simple and won't take me long to do, I'm just disappointed I have to do it to get it done.

Randy, I haven't made it to Tredegar Iron Works yet, it's on my list of places to go.

bacpacker, we don't participate in any re enactments right now, our schedule is too crazy, but we want to. One of our favorites was New Market.

Thanks for all the compliments, I enjoy what time I get to spend in there.
