Hey everyone. This is my first ever post. I've used the GJ for inspiration and information over the years, and it's one of the best places on the web. Good vibes and good people. So, let me tell you a little story about the little garage that could...
There aren't any outside shots of my place. It's not very interesting looking anyway, just a 16x24, 1.5 car detached garage with a gable roof, in the back corner of our yard. When we bought the place 20 some years back, the yard was empty. No plants or trees; just a big empty lawn front, back and sides. There was an old rusty clawfoot tub in the corner with a couple flowers planted inside. Took me 20 years to bother throwing it out, even though the rest of the yard and house grew in around it. So obviously the first thing to do was build a garage. Given the city land use code, and negotiation with my wife, 16x24 was settled on. I built it myself our first summer here. It was a simple project for me with no major hiccups.
I've borrowed several ideas from the GJ over the years. One, the left wall has unistrut bottom to top, on every stud. There are two 4' folding workbenches mounted on it made out of used butcher block countertops. I rarely use them so thinking about yanking them out. Mostly this wall is used for hanging storage of family toys and bikes, and a few power tools.
The other two walls are filled with pallet rack shelves. I chose 30" depth to minimize the loss of floor space, and also because I use a lot of Commander 27 gallon storage tubs which are 30".
Another idea borrowed from the GJ is hitch receiver tool mounts. I do enjoy not having everything permanently mounted. At the moment I have two receivers on my workbench. The lower left end of my unistrut wall I call my "tool magazine", and I have small hitch receivers mounted to the strut in somewhat awkward positions for storage of tools when not in use. So far my hitch mounted tools include:
vise
swag offroad vertical portaband bandsaw
mini belt sander
chop saw
bench grinder
arbor press
So, my little garage is pretty busy but gits 'er done. Unistrut wall, pallet racks, and hitch receiver tool storage. Thanks for all the inspiration over the years.
