I never paid too much attention to GPW's, but the answer I have given countless times on many other matters is probably the right one: Fed Specs. Both Willys and Ford had much less discretion than most people think. Paint specs changed from 42 to 45. Or were you cracking about which paint fed specs to follow. That age old argument isn't an MB/GPW thing, that's just a jeep thing. :)

I was cracking a “correct shade of od green” joke 😂👍. Just trying to stir the pot.

I don't want to lose this topic. I'm only on page 8.
You're a 1/4 way there! :) Thanks for reading, but no need to bump it to "not lose it", Mike. Or any thread you think you may want to read regularly.

If you hit the [Watch] button at the top of a thread, it will put the thread in your 'Watched' threads list. 'Watched' threads are sorted chronologically, by activity, just like the main forum, but tend to be much, much fewer in number than all threads, which makes them much, much easier to find. My 'Watched' threads list is only 7 pages long for example (compared to 483 pages!) but the most active threads are always on page 1, or at most page 2 or 3.

Also, if you don't know it, most of the most active threads have been captured in a permanent A - Z Index of Threads in the Sticky at the top of the forum, to defy the system's chronological appetite. That includes not only my 'personal tools crib' thread, but several others who have created a similar thread as well. Look at the very bottom of Page 2 in the Sticky.

Lest anyone thought we got collective amnesia or fell off the edge of the earth or got sent to Banned Camp, nothing so extraordinary. Just a 3-week trip to Eastern Europe, work, and all the house- and yard-work that comes with being away for a long time.

Some of you may remember our affection for Tona tools...

Tona 17.jpg

...which were made in Czechoslovakia, and are still being made, now as just a subsidiary of the FACOM empire knocking out homogenous conglomerate designs, in Czechia. An explanation of the personal, familial, ethnic context for the affection, in a post linked here, talked a little about our surname...
Some of you know my last name from mailing each other tools back and forth in trades and other exchanges.

What you may not know is that it’s a variation of a name that is quite popular in Eastern European folklore. The Hajduks were a fierce and large band of Christian mercenaries, either bandits or freedom fighters, depending on which side you were on, who roamed the wilds ridding the Tatra and Carpathian mountains and the Ural plains of the Ottoman Turks in the 17th through 19th centuries. Sort of like a cross between Robin Hood and his Merry Men, Crusaders, the French Foreign Legion, and the James Gang.
What we did not know until we got to Croatia, was that it was also the name for a wildly popular professional football (soccer) team in Split, which we heard about from every customs agent, tour guide, waiter, waitress or bartender, and anyone else who had a reason to review passports or credit cards.

This combination flashlight/screwdriver kit would've fit on the 'Automotive Paraphernalia' thread or the 'Worklights' thread, kinda sorta, but we're going to post this here, too, while we're on a roll.

20230909_104047.jpg

As it turns out from doing some research, there are dozens of them available on eBay, so, not exactly rare, but that has not diminished our fondness for the fleamarket find! :)

Followers here and general forum probably know we have a funny bone for early imports, the gimmickier the better, such as this Tool-Champ set, also from Hong Kong...

...or this 21-pc "Deluxe Toolkit" from Dynamic Classics, Ltd., NY (probably from Japan)...

This Ash Flash set tickles that funny bone and then some.

According to the TM application by the H.J. Ashe Corp., "Ash Flash" was in use as early as 1965. We think they may have been spitballin', because we found some ads from 1962. We are waiting for word from the Google Books team on a request to make that Snippet-Only view available - and while we wait, we will see if we can find some batteries and a bulb, if needed, and get this thing working again before the LED Conversion Mafia finds out.

Lugz, Ash Flash branding was also put on white gas Camp lanterns, as well. Fair quality. they worked, but I doubt many will go a century + like Coleman and other US/European brands have.

Oh boy.

A funny thing happened on the way to that Tool Champ post of yours from a couple years back.

Not sure why, but I suddenly found myself experiencing an irresistible urge to amass a collection of 1950s and 1960s Japan and Hong Kong manufactured combination flashlight/screwdrivers.

I think I have a dozen or so here in a box somewhere. I remember spending an inordinate amount of money on "C" batteries one day..

I think this calls for a new thread, Mr. Lugnutz. Let me give this some thought and I'll see if I can locate that box.... ;)

Meanwhile, the hunt is still on for the elusive 10mm socket.

How true that is. I recently bought an eBay 'set' of Snap On 1/4 drive, unused surplus ex aerospace.. 5.5 to 14mm... but in the set there was no goddam 10mm! Had to order a new one..
Sorry Lugz, for derailing your thread. I will delete if you think it's inappropriate.

'Hong Kong British Empire'. Love it!
Oh well, one must assume it to be an excellent British quality tool then, if it's labelled as having been made in part of the British Empire!
I know that was tongue-in-cheek, but it is decent quality, actually, and that marking was a major attractor for me. Although at $3, I'm not a hard sell. :)

How often does the Snap-on T̶r̶u̶c̶k̶ Rocket stop by the ISS?

The Acquisitions Dept is on a little funky flashlight hot streak, apparently. He brought this home from the flea yesterday. No brandings, but it is made in the good ole'. The design is simple enough. The trigger action pulls the end of the bulb against the battery lead, and then releases it when let go. We'll have to find some batteries and test the bulb and see if we can get it working again.

As we were saying on the garage sailers thread, we're going to have to put this in a display case under lock and key lest the grandlugzes decide to use it as a ray gun. :)
